Unfortuately in the 80's we had to cope with the best Hawks side of any era. Daniher had us playing finals and got us to the 2000 Grand final. They seem like glory days for me now.

Don't rule out a first time coach, yes we have got it wrong but I think it is well documented we were wrong in our process. Hire a team to conduct the interview selection process, who has no connection with the footy club. Totally unbiased process and allow past and new coaches apply.

If Roos doesn't want it that is fine but ask him to head the process and pick a coach with the values he believes will change the team culture and get the list playing to the best of their ability

Lyon said we were after an experienced coach. I would not rule in a first time coach.

Agree with the process but have to have Club Board reps as part of it with knowledgeable independents.

your joking, john northey didn't change the culture, Barassi & Jordan did all the work. Northey just lit the fuse that was they're waiting, to be excited with a match.

daniher failed to change, sorry made the culture soft... no chasing & no tackling came with daniher, after 2002ish.. & jo joing. this is where an avarage to poor culture went downhill. we had some talented players that didn't reach their total potential.

i don't know about the 90's stuff but I agree with daniher. Travis Johnstone the perfect example amongst many. That said the list was way better then. What I'd give for young and talented Paul Johnson as a back up ruck when you see Spencer out there.

Choco would be my number one priority, considering the fact that I don't think there is a chance in hell Roos could be drawn out of a very comfortable retirement to coach us. But then there is a question of money.

Unfortunately the Collingwood off shoot coaches look like spuds compared to the Geelong ones.

The guy I'd take from an inexperienced coach would be Sydney's (via stkilda and geelong Leigh Tudor).

But mainly id go for an experienced coach.

We do not need another inexperienced coach, no frickin' way, experienced coaches only.

There's lots to like about Port Melbourne.

They play for the coach. And the coach knows just how to get the best out of them.

They play for each other and back each other up relentlessly and almost instinctively.

They play as a team. Most of all, the midfield plays as a "team within a team". This more than anything allows them to get the better of sides packed with "more talented" AFL players.

They never give up and just won't be beaten. Casey had them cold last match but just couldn't put them away, and Port typically got up in the end.

And I'd assume that Ayres is just about 100% responsible for these qualities. Which all happen to be qualities that we sorely lack atmo.

Understand completely everyone's wish for an experienced coach but don't believe we have the capacity to attract anyone decent.

Ayres is not as stupid as it may sound, the qualities he has established at Port are exactly what is required at Melbourne.

Deep down I think we will finish up with another untried coach, just hope the process is not as flawed as the previous two.

There are good assistants in the system we just have to get the right one, big wraps on blokes like Leigh Tudor and Nathan Bassett.

Need to compliment a coaching change with some change at board level as well, Hinkley along with the new President and CEO have at least given Port Adelaide some on and off field momentum, something sadly lacking at Melbourne.

I follow Port Melbourne reasonably closely and know one of the players down there pretty well. Ayres has had almost ten years at AFL level with good sides and without success. In short, I think we can do much better.

Ayres well respected by the players but isn’t overly approachable or positive to the players or all that bright. Coaching at AFL level is vastly different than in the VFL, as the level of planning required for an AFL game is much intense and the coach spends much more time with the players each week.

I also don’t believe he is all that strong in analysing and making good decisions about lists, which is very important at AFL level but not at all important as coach of Port Melbourne, as the best VFL standard players want to play for them and there is no draft or trading.
