I wouldn't follow AFL anymore.

It's becoming like netball anyway, you can't even dive in and get the ball anymore, soon you won't be allow to tackle.

I'd probably go back to supporting grass roots footy, where players don't get penalized for being first at the ball and going in hard.

But we have to make sure we get it right this time as there are no more chances.

We have stuffed this up for the last 7 years and its taken the AFL's intervention to help us dig ourselves out of the massive hole which we dug.

I didn't actually realise that this was an old thread - in my mind the threat of our demise still looms very large. Our finances/support/attendances/memberships/sponsors are not in good shape, and right at this moment we are close to the worst club in the comp, with several players potentially leaving and a vacant coaching position. I hvae no feeling of security whatsoever.

"Close", I think we are the worst, and that's not even the bitter and twisted supporter coming out in me, I think its just reality. Yes GWS are winless this season but with a rather inexperienced side and the AFL's idiotic idea to place them in western Sydney they probably have an excuse. We on the other hand are an established (155 years) club who are in the heartland of the AFL and who for the past 7 years have really been the laughing stock of the AFL. We have seen little improvement on and off the field, we have seen a loss of support at the club and we have a real losing culture amongst the players and this is no fault of the players, its a culture that will ingrain itself in any side that knows nothing else but losing. I have said this on here before but we have a real opportunity in the next 12 months to turn this club around and I have the belief that we can.

Regarding original post:

If we were to fold I would watch AFL and follow a couple of sides (none with any real passion) and really focus my energy on the A-League.

If we were to merge the team would have to be Melbourne based and would have to carry on our great history.

yes, this is the heart of the problem. Jackson spoke openly about it the other night when he identified that a few weeks of decent form is deemed to be 'good enough' at the MFC then we put in a deplorable performance like last week. Naysayers told us that the Bailey tanking era would instill this type of culture and unfortunately they were dead right. How we turn it around is a gigantic problem, It hinges on Watts, Grimes, Trengove, Howe, Viney, Toumpas etc pulling their finger out and becoming consistent performers and leaders

• sue the AFL for $10,000,000 to cover unfulfilled dreams, dashed hopes, untold emotional damage, unrequited love and a new cat for my wife.

I have already experienced mergers and folding three times during my time in Sydney. When I moved here, I thought I might as well take an interest in rugby league and started with Newtown who folded a couple of seasons later. Then I switched to North Sydney Bears who were merged with Manly Sea Eagles...Manly we're reinstated as a complete team a couple of years later and Norths disappeared into the ether. My last team was South Sydney Rabbitohs who folded (were dumped) and who were resurrected a few seasons later and are now doing quite well...but if I follow anyone now, it's probably the Storm.

The only positive I could take if the Dees folded, would be that I could view games with total impartiality and save myself a lot of angst; but it would leave a gaping hole in my life having been a dedicated supporter for approx 58 years.

I would say very very very far from secure!

After watching the cats game I realized we are absolutely miles behind the competition to the point that we may never be able to catch up again.

The great thing about footy though is that it can change quickly.

As for Melbourne merging - then I would follow the merged club.

If Melbourne folded then I would most likely follow another club and I am not ashamed to say it. I wouldn't turn my back on the greatest sport in the world. Yes you have sad moments, yes you have magical moments but there is never a dull moment and along the way you make great fiends and share a great passion for the game.

Having grown up with footy at the lake oval barracking for South Melbourne, I didn't appreciate their move to Sydney. Footy wasn't the same, my little heart was broken, and I gave footy away. It was great! For quite a few years there I became a productive and valuable member of society experiencing a calm world full of beauty and the joys of life. My anxieties disappeared, I took up running, I discovered music, learnt to play guitar, got myself a girlfriend, finished uni, travelled the world, and launched a career.

Still, the lure of football was everywhere, and in retrospect it was only a matter of time before I would be enticed back to the dark side. The crunch came when my brother (also a former South supporter) invited me to a Melbourne game in 1987. Now why would I want to go and see a dud team like Melbourne? However, I did not not see the danger, nor did I reckon upon the appeal of that 1987 team. Damn you John Northey and the confidence and competitiveness you instilled in that group – it was irresistible. I was back, I was a Demon and glad to be there.

So if Melbourne were to disappear, it will be a low-down dirty sinking feeling of despair. You will be bitter and twisted for a quite a time. For some it will be release. But I reckon for most of you – YOU'LL BE BACK.
