People wax lyrical about some of our new youngsters in the midfield but I have a feeling that Max will make a big difference to the club once he's fit an firing.

(Disclosure: I'm happy to be one of Max's sponsors at the club this year)

We know how important it is for clubs to be strong in their ruck divisions which form an integral part of the midfield. Max has in the past shown some glimpses of what he could do once be gets up and running.

I was at Casey late last season (v Northern Blues) and was talking with a Carlton supporter and the bloke told me he still remembered Max's game against the same team a year earlier and marveled at his impressive ruck skills. His view was that Max showed something special that day with his ruck tapwork and mobility around the ground.

I know I'm biased but it's young players with his attributes of size, flexibility and skills who can make a difference to a team.

It's time for a change of fortune for the big fella.

Sooooo hope Gawn or Spencer really step up soon. Russian carrying us alone all year leaves us vulnerable with Martin gone.

Pederson @ 193cm 95k is Dunn/Frawley size, surely too small for much rucking isn't he (yet he's always mentioned as a 2nd ruck)?

Interesting days coming.

I have very high hopes for young Max. We all know that potentially on field he could be anything, if of course those wonky knees hold up. Off field he could also be a major asset. He's the type of player that supporters and team mates love. A character that makes going to and playing the game fun, literally a marketing departments dream. Cross your fingers and toes and hopefully big Max will become a regular fixture this year.

I seriously hope you are correct WJ, I have no doubt of his ability.

However I do have big doubts about his body being up to the grind of AFL football.

As we speak it is doubtful he will be available for AFL duty in the early part of season.

Hasn't he just got a hammy? That article says he'll be ready to go by week 10 of training which I wouldn't have thought was that far away.

He is certainly not robust stuie and Just think after two knee recos in two years they will bring him along very slowly.

Lets hope he does a "grimes" and has an injury free 2013

we have had a heap of players recently go through sustained injury, the point it looked like they were finished - most recovered, among them Sylvia, Moloney, Rivers and McLean.. on the other side you have Bartram.. point is that in this day and age it is more than likely the medicos can 'fix' you

Back up rucks spend more time not rucking.

They better be useful at something else as well as holding up in the bounce for about 20 mins.

Yes exactly rpfc!

The vulnerability I meant was, if Russian goes down for weeks or the season, who becomes 1st ruck? Spencers training reviews sound promising though, have you seen him lately?

Spencer does. At the training I went to, they didn't even bother with having anyone other than Spencer and Jamar rucking.

I have his kicking is atrocious but his commitment to training and contest is second to none.

Good luck to Big Max this season. He deserves a decent run at it.

Always get a laugh from Gawn in Sixty Seconds and his interviewing style. It may stem from this:

Now on the MFC Long Term injury list.

Does not look good to me for 2013

Due to come off it the week before Round 1.

He is getting miles into his legs and building up the strength to carry that massive frame. Not overly concerned at this stage as he is on track to be back playing at Casey somewhere around the start of the season. Would have thought as far as LTI's go, he is in a pretty reasonable position...

I think it is fair to say that Gawn, Trengove, and Clark will struggle to impact 2013.

Don't agree entirely RPFC. Gawn is on track to be playing early in the year as are Clark and Trenners. They will require time to build up the fitness base and then get some game time into their legs however there is no reason that by about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way through the season that they can't be back and having an impact...

It says: "RUCKMAN Max Gawn has been placed on the long-term injury list, following an injury to his hamstring during training early in the pre-season.

Gawn will spend a minimum eight weeks on the LTI list, which ends on 22 March - a week before Melbourne's first round clash against Port Adelaide at the MCG on Sunday, 31 March 2013."

They also say no replacement has been considered yet... so it maybe a little premature to be writing off his entire season yet.

Trengove and Clark will be firing come round 6-7 and they will be a welcome addition.

By that stage, no doubt we will have at least a couple of injuries - which is natural.

Big Maxy Gawn would be aiming to get a few senior games in this year and build into next year

and he should still be able to achieve that, he just needs to keep ticking away and get games into him via VFL.

Why would you put a guy on the long term injury list at this time of the year?

He has a hamstring injury.

It must be fairly serious if you are putting him on the list at this time.

Why bother , why not do it later as you get closer to the season start.

I do not understand doing it now unless you expect the guy to be injured way past the start of the season.

Players need a strong PS to compete.

It's very rare for a player with an interrupted (or obliterated) PS to have a big impact on a season.

OD and I are not saying they won't play, just that they will struggle to be their best and sustain it.

Tough season for all three.
