Haven't seen any other threads dedicated to the topic (I apologise if there is another thread), but I think the 'Leadership Group' makes for an interesting conversation.

I'm glad to hear that the two Jack's will be retained. Hopefully 2013 will be a year free of any off field dramas.

Interesting idea to have another vote to decide the leadership group. Is an annual vote something that most other clubs do?

Anyway, here is the current leadership group: James Frawley, Mitch Clark, Clint Bartram, Mark Jamar, Nathan Jones and Colin Garland.

What, if any, changes would you like to see happen?

Personally, I'd like Sylvia to replace either Bartram or Garland. Admittedly, I am an unabashed fan of Col, and I don't expect to be agreed with on this one. But I think he has begun to mature,

and would thrive under the extra responsibility.

IMO it would be an overreaction to change the captains based on last year. They had a really tough initiation all things considered. As someone who sees the positive, I trust all the events will fast track their influence.

As far as the leadership group goes, are we picking it the same way as last season?

Posted

Most if not all clubs vote every year. Maxwell at Collingwood must win his captaincy back every year and he wouldn't want it any other way - noone wants to be a Mitchell to anyone's Hodge.

And Garland is a leader, Sylvia is not. Never give leadership to someone in the hopes they pull their finger out - you are belittling leadership at the club by doing that.

While I'm fully aware that it is voted on by players, coaches, etc, I would really like to see Watts getting voted in to the leadership group for 2013. His onfield development will continue, I just hope that what we don't see as supporters are things that Jack has growing in (ie. attitude, training, commitment, etc).

None of us on here can tell if this has happened/is happening, so limit the abuse.

From what I hear, Dawes is supposed to be a bit of a leader, I would be watching him over pre-season for a possible role. Bartram is the only doubt, but only due to his injury.

Posted

Personally I would love to see Watts replace Bartram, particularly when we are guaranteed to see more of Jack in the backline than we will of Bartram. When the leadership group was voted on last year, I expect that many expected them to be playing at opposite ends of the ground rather than Jack down back. I consider that he sets a great example and it is only fair that he be rewarded accordingly. I agree that Silvia has stepped up a notch but I cannot see who he should logically replace however.

I expect it to remain the same.

It wouldn't surprise me if both Dawes and Byrnes were added, because they are both reputed to have strong leadership qualities. Of course, they don't have to be part of the formal leadership structure to fulfil this role, but I have a strong feeling that part of the reason they were recruited was because of what they can contribute in this area.

Byrnes was named "Best Club Man" (or something like that) at Geelong's B & F evening this year (interesting the same night after he signed on with the Dees...). Says something of a player when most of his footy this year was in the VFL. So, yes, a player who displays that sort of character, even when he's overlooked for games in the Seniors most weeks, would have to be up there in contention. Certainly a great example to the rest of the list.

Would lovr to see Dawes included if not just to irk filth supporters.

Would it? Pretty sure teh reply will be about a bloke that was dropped at the end of the season from their finals-bound team now finds himself in the leadership group at Melbourne. Same deal with Byrnes. But, that's where we are at, and until our young blokes step up/get older, we're left with not much option.

I reckon there's a big chance Dawes and Byrnes might be in, though the Hun artilce said they players vote on it after the Darwin camp next week so i assume they would have to impress their new team mates over that 10 days or so.

Dropping someone from the LG is fraught. Barty might be dropped only because he may not play so much? I hope Garlo doesn't get dropped, mainly because it would indicate he didn't step up last year (i have not heard he didn't but for that matter have not heard he did).

I think Garlo will have a great year next season as i supect he was in a tricky space last year as he sort of bridges the younger and more senior players. With some of that resolved (ie the senior players leaving) Garlo can be a role model and not have to worry so much about the politics that were no doubt still bubbling last season.

I also would love to Sylvia put into the LG and have a sneaky vibe he might be.

It's a hard call to make on Bartram considering Grimes won the club leadership award when he was out for the season with his foot. So in saying that we need to look past just purley on-field leadership displays. For this reason, I'd consider the group as it stands is still moulding itself into a high performing leadership group and with the additions of Dawes, Burns, and Rodan, the club should find it an easier propostion to fast-track the current LG development.

Mitch Clark had more time to impact the group considering the LG was not chosen until early Feb this year (IIRC) so for Byrnes or Dawes to be included with the first 5 to 6 weeks of training might be a little trigger happy.

I am very much of those that see Dawes impacting our team aka Mitch in the short time that he did stay on the ground and his influence around the Club.

Not arguing there LS, just saying that Dawes being in our LG would be water off a black (and white) duck's back.

If he's only just "begun to mature" he's not yet a leader.

can't see any changes coming. All the players in there lead by example with their work ethic.

the leadership group SHOULD be voted on every year.

no one gets dropped - you get re-appointed according to your work ethic and leadership ability. if these drop off then you should not be re-appointed.

this is the only way to keep people accountable.

reason for edit: grammar

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
