Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Thank God that trade didn't happen

The trade window, circa 1936:

'Hughes then floated an idea: "I think you could probably have Len's brother Norm. But he's a bit slow for the half forward flank."' (from The Red Fox).

These sentences have been in my mind for the past couple of weeks and it made me wonder what other catastrophes have been narrowly avoided.

Can you think of any other examples of trades that fell through (rumoured or otherwise), leaving you wiping your brow with relief?

It was Glenn McLean.

I hated losing him at the time. Thought he was a future champ.

He faded away. I wonder if he barracks for us or them now.....surely not the filth!!

was on the right track, until family got in the way of coaching. He left, & so did his career. A big mistake.

Who the hell signed off on trading Earl Spalding to the Blues?

How did this move occur? I can't remember the details, only that I was rather gutted. The Duke wasn't the most reliable of kicks but he was a strong CHF.

Demon Wiki:

'Spalding joined Carlton in return for pick 5 in the 1991 National Draft (used to select Jason Norrish). He played 102 games for the Blues between 1992 and 1997, and played in both their 1993 Grand Final and 1995 Premiership sides.'

But why did he want to move? Surely the club were reluctant to agree to the trade. Pick 5 sounds tempting in today's recruiting world but it didn't have quite the same cache in 1991.

It was thought at the time that Spalding would not have been a player in our next premiership side.....His kicking was somewhat suspect....and there were young KPP comming on (Lyon,Neitz and the Ox)

Well, Northy's FD were right, he wasn't part of our next premiership side.

The Pearl often received as many groans as he did applause for his efforts.

We really won out with Norrish didn't we?

I cant even remember Norrish getting a run.

The pearl went on to frustrate the Blues for years .

DId he play well in the Flag team?

Cant remember myself.

I was a bit gutted abot losing him-he looked laconic and casual on the field ,which was just his style.

He was a top mark and a long ,if at times crappy kick .

Jason Norrish was a good player for us. Quick. I remember being really disappointed when he decided to go home to WA to play for Freo, where again, he played some good footy.

Can remember many up in arms about the mooted trade of Ryan Ferguson and Brad Sewell.

The majority here were relieved when it didn't happen

That's crap. The majority were wondering why it stalled and did not happen. There were a few odd posters that seemed to think Ferg's unquestionable bravery at the ball made up for other unquestionable critical deficiencies in his game.

The Ferguson for Sewell trade would have been the greatest trade ever made.

Of course had Ferguson said yes, he probably would still be playing having won a flag and 5 All Australian nominations at FB, and Sewell would have busted his knee 1 game in, never to be seen again.

We almost screwed Hawthorn. Such a shame it didn't work.

Sorry but that's crap.

The majority of posters on both sites were against the trade. Sewell at the time had a lot of issues with OP. can't remember what side of the debate I was on, but know most supported Ferguson, only Old's brilliant retort stands out from it, to a comment from CAC who came onto both boards to settle the natives down.

I know you are the try hard TGR of this site, but don't try re-writing history on me:

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
