Not a rumour!

But I like the thought of Moloney & Jurrah for Matt Thomas.

As another poster has already said. Port would prefer to trade for a free agent.

Sounds like Moloney is going to Lions though.

is Matt Thomas really any good? not sure what all the fuss is about, sounds like an in under type?

For the millionth time, can we "trade" Moloney and or Jurrah for anyone?

We are clearly talking to a lot of players and hope to have a few good draft picks left at draft day. We have already added 4 players to our list and will probably upgrade 2 in Nicho and Evans. That is 6 added. Unless I am missing something at this stage we have only lost 2 in Jurrah and Green.. No one else has left or been traded, which still might occur. Therefore we need to move on 4 players at least. If we pick up another 2 players in trades and say 4 drafted in ND and 1 in PSD, we will need to move on at least another 11 players this month. That would be a turnover on the main list of 13 players. That is huge, but needed.

I can see some trades for pick upgrades or 2 players swapped for 1 coming up.

Yes if they agree. Moloney could do a Monfries.

Lawrence left and Moloney has gone as a free agent so that makes at least four.

As an additional minimum I reckon Bate and Petterd will be taken by other clubs, and if we are lucky Morton could also be traded.

Hmm hasn't one of the biggest issues this season been "spread from the contest"? While it is great to have Viney I would have thought some outside run was in order too. Will be very interesting to see how it plays out over the next few seasons. :)

Now that's the understatement of the century.

The AGE reporting Melbourne is talking to Port about inside mid Matt Thomas. Possibly as part of a deal on Beemer.

What deal needs to be done on an RFA?

If Port want Moloney they take him. We've already expressed our desire not to keep him.

Compensation will be from the ND, not from Port.

Ed: At least that's how I understand it.

The issue for Port is if they take any FA's then their compensation for losing Chaplin and Pearce will be reduced, which is why they decided to trade for Monfries.

Agree Jarka - The Age article today with Marty Pask predicts there may be no more straight FA movements with clubs losing FA's instead wanting to hold on to the compensation picks. Pask believes that trades and swaps more likey for the remainder even if they are FA's. More here: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/drop-compensation-picks-says-player-agent-20121009-27bbe.html

If we were to match Port's offer to Beamer (highly unlikely) then he could only go there as part of a trade.

I don't get it that a club would trade for a FA or RFA when they can be obtained for nothing.

Compensation then comes from the ND.

Well said, Jarka.

PA are trying to keep their 'concentration' of FA points...

Ridiculous system the AFL has made...

The teams with a massive FA points deficit - ie. Essendon would like to trade their RFAs, but the teams with a massive FA points 'profit' ie. St Kilda are not signing FAs for fear of diluting their comp pick.

They should reverse it right now and just give a pick for every player that exits under FA.

As Port has lost Chaplin and Pearce they have two decent picks waiting for them. If they had signed up Monfires through FA they would have 1 pick and the value of the other would be lowered.

They traded away pick 48 for Monfries and will keep (at this point) their two picks where they were.

I find it rather amusing that the first FA/trade season hasn't even reached half way and already clubs have figured out how to bend it to suit..lol

Agree BB but, I think with one slight correction.

They would have worked a way around it about 6 months ago.

That's their job after all.

Probably true. Much is theory though til you actually get to the table and see what the other guy is prepared to do etc.

Meanwhile, it's been reported that former head recruiter Barry Prendergast doesn't rate Melbourne's draft decisions thus far in the 2012 draft and trade period.

I find that comforting and reassuring

Me too. I wouldn't be commenting if I was him. BTW can we ask him if the Blues would like Cook.

From other reports I get the distinct feeling that we will be taking Wines no matter who is available.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
