Is there any actual rivers fa info in this thread?

Seems like alot of discussion about different players attributes.

Geelong has met with former Melbourne defender Jared Rivers as it seeks a replacement for retired champion Matthew Scarlett. Brisbane has also expressed some interest.

First time I've seen it mentioned that he has actually gone. Think it's a mistake letting him go, always has a crack and is the backline general (even though he played time up forward this year). Thought he should've played our Maxwell/Gibson role would much rather him down back than Garland.

The Age could be wrong and he is merely exploring options. Wouldn't be surprised if he's gone though.

erm 'think its a mistake letting him go".... the ball is in his court, we've made an offer but if he gets offers from teams he thinks are Premiership chances in the next few years he might choose to join one of them in the hope of winning a flag before he retires.

Yeah fair enough, I guess I meant "letting him go without a fight" doesn't seem like we've done too much to persuade him to stay though admittedly I don't know what goes on behind closed doors. Would have thought playing him out of position for half a season would be a clear indication of where the FD sees his future.

TBH I think that was a slip from The Age, he isn't a former yet because he hasn't announced anything to us and the club hasn't said anything unlike what happened with Beamer.

Rivers has been a good average player. Lets be honest. If he goes i wish him well and will miss him, but it is not earth shattering. He can be replaced.

Wellingham??

From what I understand, unless Rivers has a change of heart he will be heading elsewhere.

I disagree - I think he has been a very good player and the general of our backline. Will be very sorely missed if he leaves.

rivers has been ok in a bad side. He can be replaced. He will only be missed if we cannot do deals.

The whisper in the wires is that Rivers has been given an sizable offer today by Brisbane. We have three days to match...

Agree Jordie, raised my eyebrows too. Going to Geelong made sense, chance for finals etc. But Brisbane is left field. Why not stay at Melbourne?

Only greater lengevity and more $$$ would justify the move. Brisbance would be a moderate chance to play finals in the next 2 years at best.

Posted

So now that it's Brisbane that have made the offer, surely if we match it he will stay. The Lions may play finals before us but if it's a premiership he wants I wouldn't have thought that the Lions would be the club he would transfer to.

So the ball's back in our court I would think. If we match he doesn't have to stay, but he might. This could also be him increasing his contract through the threat of leaving. I think if it's only Brisbane we have to match we could keep him.

but could he play for the MFC again?

I would doubt it. The connection has been severed.

How could the connection have been severed? He hasn't actually left yet right, or does he want to leave regardless of where he ends up now?

Gosh you talk some bollocks sometimes.

Everybody understands that players are going to push their market value, just like every other employee in the history of the world.

It doesn't mean that if things don't work out, we won't keep him.

Play this scenario out - Rivers comes to Neeld and says 'Actually, Neeldy, I've been thinking. I wouldn't mind hanging around after all'. Neeld says 'Oh well, Jared. Sorry old son, but we're going to delist you'.

FMD.

my above post is in reference to Brent Moloney.

I doubt he could play on our list in 2013.

He wants out.

You can see the confusion though, when you're quoting a comment about Jared Rivers in a thread about Jared Rivers?

Rivers is UNRESTRICTED. If he wants to go he is gone.

yep. I thought Sloonie was refering to Moloney my mistake. I have no probs with Rivers.

Oh thanks, I didn't know how that worked.. I was saying that it is possible that Rivers could be using FA as a way to drive his contract up, and he doesn't want to leave melbourne at all. All UNRESTRICTED means is that Rivers has the choice to chose where he ends up. Can still stay on better coin and probably will unless a power club in their window want him, and tbqf I'd be surprised if they did.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
