Saturday, 19 September, 1964.

Ronald Dale Barassi held the premiership club aloft and never played for the club again.

This triggered really mixed reactions...mainly sadness. But on the bright side RDB is home again where he belongs just waiting for the 13th which we hope isn't too far away - guessing 3 to 5 years...well wishing and hoping that...ah, there's that touch of saddness again or wistful longing...

He may well have been his worst game for the Dees as well.

We won that day inspite of RDB.

Have a gut feeling it will be the last one I see WJ

But I have the memory which unfortunately is a lot more than a large number of others.

He actually did play again. It was a post-season 'champion of Australia' game v I think, South Adelaide, the South Australian premiers. Melbourne won narrowly and Ron Barassi played well in that game.

My grandfather was around ten years old that day. Sadly, he may not live to see another Melbourne game, let alone a Premiership. Hopefully on the day we finally win one, I'll be able to have a celebratory beer for him.

Geez, give him a break. He's only 58, a mere babe. He's got 30 years to go yet

I was there too! I'm 59 now. Gasp! Can't believe Hassa missed that shot at goal. 48 years on... the only years I'd give a 'pass' to are 1971, 1976, 1987 to 1991, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 to 2006

Your grandfather was 10? Shite, my Dad was in his 20s and I always had you pegged as being around the same age as me (I'm 28). You must be both young, and from a line of young parents.

prof, as a semi-veteran demon tragic, would you give a pass to '67? came 7th i think. we pulled back from a bad situation that year, had it not been for norm smith's bad health may have done even better.

Ed: 8 (out of 18) games decided by a goal or less that year. Must be a record.

Yeah, he was 42 when I was born and yep I was the last. I had a sister who was already 21 when I was born and had a baby of her own, so I have a nephew who is older than me. Weird eh :) Never met my nephew though and only met my "sister" for the first time at the old boy's funeral.

Families are amazing Nasher.

I have a sister who is 18 years younger than me. Has no memory of me living at home.

I am closer to being her children's grand father than their uncle.

And not one of them supports the Dees, all bloody North and Bombers and Brisbane fans.

Ran out of taste in the family after me

I was only a twinkle in my dad's eye in 1964. I have read so much about that era and heard so much from Dad about what it was like to be a Demon supporter at that time. I long for that experience......

I remember 1967 well. Did not miss a game. Hassa Mann starred all year. After a shocking year in 1966, perhaps '67 deserves a pass.

Just to follow up my comment about RDB's last game, I managed to track down this reference:

http://australianfootball.com/clubs/bio/South+Adelaide/320

Although it doesn't mention Barassi, it identifies the match and is a fascinating if now buried part of MFC's folkore.

I will add some match details to this game in my next post. BD

In a footnote, South Adelaide also won their last premiership in 1964, their 11th - one short of us.

I was in my penultimate year of high school in '64, and had enjoyed all the successes of our era of glory. I'm now well and truly retired. Little did I know .........

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session.
