There's no greater certainty than us beating GWS next week.

As far as tanks go, GWS are in a Sherman, driven by Arnie and towing a large water carrying vessel.

Callan Ward out with "early signs of OP";

Toby Greene with "groin soreness";

Luke Power playing as the sub;

Stephen Coniglio a late withdrawal with "hamstring tightness";

Dean Brogan dropped;

Eight changes, including a debutant, to a team that won last week;

The top three possession-getters from last week were rested, with the fifth highest being the sub (and brought on only after Gold Coast had kicked away);

Funnily enough, those mysterious omissions are expected to be out for 2 weeks.

I dare say that the tank is well and truly on!!!

You would have to think so. Really odd decisions otherwise, given they had GCS this week.

However, I'd be cautious saying we're a certainty to do anything, let alone win.

If any club can lose to a tanking side, it's us.

Ah, but you are forgetting,

Sheeds is growling and going 'Arrrghh!!!! I've never won a spoon in my life, don't you dare call this tank.. *cough* this player management scheme anything other than that. Cos I am Kevin Sheedy .... hey look is that Brock over there?'

I find it unbelievable that Melbourne beats Richmond by 8pts earlier in the 2009 season, then loses by a kick after the siren allegedly as a result of positional experimentation (at least we played our players, a 2 goal turnaround, earth shattering!) but GWS has an almost 60 point turnaround after dropping all their "stars" against a team that until only a few weeks ago couldn't win a game!

Yet there is not even a murmur of from the press about tanking. It defies belief, the AFL protection of its new babies obviously runs pretty deep.

A team in its first season is going to be pulled up for tanking????? This thread is utterly pointless.

Well it could be best that GW$ finish last -- they would surely not risk Whitfield just to [censored] us off, would they.

And GC may decide to go for a genuine #2 rather that JV who is rated around 8 I believe.

Agree -- they just aren't any good, and weren't expected to be. $enile old coach doesn't help, mind you.

The best part about GWS 'tanking' is that they left in HWFUA!

Guys on $2m and he would be about the 6th most important player behind Patton, Cameron, Ward, Davis, Greene, and there may be more...

Not that I give a rat's tossbag about him anymore, but I put at least 12 players ahead of him and I can't wait to see the explosion from those players, when their 2 year contracts are up.

Yes, I would be all up in the ear of Cameron.

But so would half the league...

I agree that they aren't a good team, and as I have stated in other tanking threads, I don't think anyone can be "pulled up for it" as it is a situation created by the AFL's rules.

However, I think that if tanking exists that it doesn't matter if its a new team or the oldest in the competition, anyone can do it. I also don't think the GWS team we saw today was anything like the team we saw last week, or the last time they played the suns. Coincidence, maybe, but it looks equally if not more suss than most other 'tanking' incidents, and yet we aren't hearing much about it from a rabid press who can make a story out of nothing (see Mark Neeld's alleged racist remark). Coincidence? I doubt it....

I have always maintained that Kevin Sheedy is an absolute genius but he's really outdone himself this time with a performance of sheer brilliance.

Sheeds' forte is the smoke and mirrors gambit which he set up this time by claiming that anyone who suggested he was tanking by omitting six (soon to become eight) players from the team that beat Port Adelaide was "a disgrace".

Then his team took the field and produced the most godawful performance I've seen on a football field since 186 (in fact it could have been worse because we lost to a premiership team while, apart from Ablett and one or two others, GCS are pretty much shyzen).

Would the AFL investigate this appalling sham of a farcical travesty? Would On the Couch make smug allegations of misfeasance against Sheedy while smirking away like schoolboys on a prank mission? Would AFL Insider dissect the game in minute detail to detect any wrong doing from the selectors or within the coaches box?

Not on your Nellie!!!

The difference is that while Melbourne officialdom reacts to taunts and slurs in a gentlemanly manner, Sheedy goes for the jugular. Demetriou wouldn't have the nuts to go after a club which the AFL owns and wants to ultimately see thrive (else they do a $100 mill or more) and Healy, Sheahan and Roos would quake in their boots at the very thought of copping a serve from Sheeds about such disgusting allegations.

The GWS now have Lachie Whitfield in the bag. I can't wait to see what sort of excuse for a team they name to take us on in the nation's capital next week. I heard that Julia Gillard was a chance for a back pocket and Tony Abbot might be the sub.

In any event, if the weather's fine, we must surely be a chance to win our first 100 point plus game since ... (somebody please help me here).

Next they'll play Junior in the ruck!

Warnock was starring yesterday-that says it all .

The AFL have created a money sink that they will never fill .

Its like they have looked at the NRL model and said

"Our game could be as bad as that if we invent some crap teams and get involved in the competition as stakeholders and administrators at the same time. Within in a few years we could really destroy 150 years of other peoples toil".

    MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

    Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

    Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
