If Geelong want boak soooo bad then I want Motlop and some sort of swapping of picks.Our stackpile of picks our are trade bait. Forget Dunn,Bate and others all you are going to get is a upgrade from pick in the high 50's to a pick in the low 50's. If a club wants a player and we don't want the player anymore then we look after the player and get any deal done.

I would love Motlop in red and blue. Will be elite. Absolute gun that kid.

Having said that, we just don't know what will become of Spencer. He is certainly a hulking lad who gives 110%. That tackle a couple of weeks ago was a ripper. And he works hard to get in front at the contest. Very slow, though. With more patience, more games and more coaching, he might prove he can play. ATM, I don't think he will be worth anything much at the trade table. I suspect Stef Martin might be worth more - has played more games and shown he can do well as a no1 ruck.

Most of us wanted Jamar axed 5 or 6 years ago. They do take longer to develop.

Not saying we shouldn't get rid of Spencer, just that I don't think he's worth much.

I dislike trade speculation but can't shake the urge, sometimes.

Mostly I prefer to look for trades where a player will probably be better off making a fresh start somewhere else, it keeps my conscience soothed.

I think all of Bate, Dunn, Morton, Spencer, Bennell and Jetta are in that category. Whether traded or simply 'released'. We should not expect to get too much for them, of course. But you never know, they could get themselves that little slice of 'Stephen Armstrong' luck going to a club that needs exactly what they bring, and hit some form and make a good run of it all. All have serious limitations but can play a role in a tam that has the 'core talent' to cover it.

Joel MacDonald may find himself being one of those players who make multiple moves over their career. His mature body and good efforts are appreciated but like the others mentioned he has limitations which are maddening for supporters. We are blessed with a good stock of highly mobile tall defenders, plus a range a options and possible developing players. As much as I think it is nice to have some key defenders who can be a forward mixer, I don't think it is a good permanent option. As such, defence is well stocked.

Port would, presumably, want a mature and ready mifielder to help compensate for the loss of Boak to anywhere, whether to us, Geelong, Essendon, Carlton, etc. Whichever club seals tht deal (if it happens) would love to be able to offer, say, Colin Sylvia plus a good draft pick. Like most people, I feel that little bit uneasy disposing of Sylvia because at any moment he could burst into a genuine star player. On the other hand, I'm expecting that our 2012 draft will feature four high-quality midfielders. With that in mind, Sylvia seems a lot less 'essential'.

If Brent Moloney wanted to leave for a fresh start, that would be understandable. I'd rather give him next year to see if he can correct this astonishing form slump.

I'm assuming that Brad Green and Aaron Davey will play out ther remaining careers with Melbourne, however much longer or shorter that is. Wouldn't it be great to see each of them regain a last burst of form and do a 'comeback tour' to leave on a high note, on their own terms?

For all the talk about changing over a large number of players at the end of the season to achieve future success, in reality it rarely happens. On average most clubs turn over about 5-10 players at most (usually including rookies, redrafts etc). Of the genuine senior list players, maybe 1-3 will change, barring a rash of retirements or persistent injuries. Trade week is rarely exciting or productive, except maybe in the longer term. Drafting may produce a result, but it is usually longer term also. What alternatives are there? Maybe recruiters should be more adventurous with established, older VFL players (like a Pods for example). A recruiter's job is very tough, but miracles are increasingly proving possible, just don't expect them. Usually, the best and only practical alternative is to work with what you have got and make gradual changes over a few years.

I have never seen a slower player in the AFL than Spencer - even going back to the days of Mick Nolan and Percy Jones.

Slow to react and has a very low skill level.

I have no idea what the recruiters saw in him.

I am interested to see if he gets a run next round I for one want to see what he has to offer. 45 hitouts and a Goal on the weekend for Casey must mean he can play at some level.

I know where you're coming from but to me, 45 hit outs doesn't equate to skill.

The tallest man playing footy is Sandilands, yet, I reckon his tap outs get sharked by opposition players to the tune of 50/50. I don't have the stats, so I could be wrong.

FWIW, I watched the Casey game after getting home from (depressing) Etihad and I hardly noticed Spencer.

Yep if Boak is hell bent on being a cat and Port want our pick for him then it could be a three way deal we get Boak for our pick and then boak to geelong for Motlop. I doubt it would happen but the cats have nothing to give port and Motlop is exactly what we need in terms of a crumbing forward who kicks goals and can play a bit of midfield if needed.

Trades, clubs and experience aside. The diabetes diagnosis can be managed by Fitzy, it shouldn't influence amount of interest. He's actually performed pretty well since the diagnosis. Just saying.

Justin Madden, Dean Cox, and Aaron Sandilands all looked slower than Spencer when they started. None of them had the skill as youngsters to kick the goal he did to win the game for Casey as he did last Saturday.

If he can turn out half as good as any of them, he's worth persevering with, and I reckon he's showing signs.

He reminds me of Jacobs at Preston before he went to Adelaide.
