Maybe the thing I'm most excited about is - solidified best 22 Melbourne players who can really kick a footy - 0!

Toumpas has a chance to hold down a spot and show us what he can do on the outside using that run and carry and kicking skills. Half back flank certainly sounds like a good starting point to me for at least some of his football.

A Blues supporting mate of mine is a keen follower of junior footy reckons we have landed a beauty. "I'm really happy with Menzel, reckon he's close to the most gifted player in this year's group. But if you ask me to choose the player most likely to become a star, I'd pick Jimmy Toumpas. Expect this kid to make an immediate impact from round 1. He's an absolute machine."

Thanks so much for the bucket of clod water. Please note one big difference....Jimmy has been playing senior footy for quite a while, not APS or TAC. In no other way will I attempt to compare the two : totally different players, and rôles.

Yep - Toumpas played in the SANFL grand final the year before last, as a 17 year old.

(BTW, Jack will be fine/great. More than anything else, he needs a solid pre-season, and a solid run of matches. He showed last year what he was capable of before injury cut him down just as he was getting going.)

You mean this. We have to rescue him as soon as possible.

Fake smile. His eyes are saying "get me out of here!"

Correct olisik. He was informed by John Worsfold 15 minutes prior to the draft that West Coast would take him with their first pick if he was still available. He was asked to wear the shirt by John in good faith.

Sadly for West Coast he was not still available.

Underrated post.

From the interview I watched with him, he seemed happy to be at PA. Not as happy as Toumpas seemed to be at being drafted by the Dees though!

I saw that too but read it differently, his micro-expressions told the true story.

Only Tim Roth would understand where I am coming from...

I played a 20/20 match for echuca thurs night with half a dozen of Ollies good mates. The moment it finished everyone ran into the rooms to watch the draft to see where he would end up.

When PA read out his name there was just dead silence until one of his best mates says, '[censored]... Ollie will be [censored] at that!' Haha.

Doubt we would ever get him in the future though. Would you really want to go to a club who had a chance at you but passed for someone else?

I'm stoked at selecting the Greek adonis, can't believe he slipped to 4.

I reckon adolescents would be rapt to arrive at Bali.

But if they got into a Bali jail, they may want just to come home after a while.

As they always do.

Are you saying that the difference between playing at Melbourne and playing at Port Adelaide is the same as the difference between vacationing in Bali and being locked up in a Bali jail?

Wines will make friends, get games, and I doubt he will want to leave Port for quite a while, if ever.

If he does at some point choose to leave the Power, I don't think he'll be coming to us. I wouldn't want to come to a club that had passed on me.

Well, I'd like to have him at the Dees, a I'm sure many do.

Yes it's a bit of a stretch, but we need to get into a way of always looking to get the players we need, if he fits the bill in a couple of years. If he does we should be looking always at how we can get it done.

To me, Its time to stop being hunted & start hunting.

Let's wait and see if Ollie becomes a good player first. Unless he puts his heart and soul into playing at PA no body will want him later on. Stats indicate that the majority of drafted players don't make 50 games.

I think it would be pretty different for he top 10 drafted players though. How many did Morton play?

I'm gonna miss you Adelaide...But come at me Melbourne! #firstandforever #Melbourneboy

Its almost like he is aware about how paranoid a lot of Melbourne supporters are about the go-home factor, and is doing everything he can to reassure he is here to stay.

Wines will be just one of several on our radar over the next 24 months. Expect us to make plays for several GWS and GC youngsters coming out of contract in 2013/14.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
