......and though I don't have the exact detail of ladder position, MFC were in the doldrums circa 1953, appointed a hard nut as coach, then played in the next 7 GFs with 5 wins, in an unprecedented and unrepeated period of absolute dominance!!!

PS: Checked - second last, 3 wins for the season 1953 - runners up in 54 and premiers 55,56,57,59,60

Well if history repeats itself then this is looking rather juicy ;)!

We know we are really becoming desperate when we dredge through history and relate to Phoenix like resurrections to salve our misfortunes. There is hope. Japan rose again after being nuked. The Black Death did not wipe out all of humanity. Not all Christians were eaten by lions. And the bookie odds look good that we will win at least one flag in the next 100 years.

They missed the Spoon by 2 Premiership Points from Hawthorn winning 3 and drawing 1 with a percentage of 80.1.

The Hawks beat them by 28 points in Round 10.

Just to add to the history, it's a record that will never be broken. Top 4 finish for 11 consecutive years '54 to '64. Premiers in '64 as well, and we should have won in '58. What did Barass say in the aftermath of the '58 GF loss? ........ something akin to: 'half of us wanted to fight and half of us wanted to play footy. If we had all joined in the fighting, or all avoided it, we would have won the flag'. No wonder C'wood are the Filth! I guess we did wreak some revenge in '64 though.

I feel dirty for even thinking it let alone stating it, but I look at the curretn Essendon team as an example of things turning around very quickly.

They were hopeless a couple of years ago in comparison to where they are now, regardless of them limping into finals. Hell, even we were giving them a touch up.

Now if we can just uncover a Stanton in our list we'll be laughing. The supporters' whipping boy come good......hm...

It's even happened for us within the last 20 years.

Won the spoon in 97' and then went on to a Prelim in 98' and should have won the flag IMO. That was our best chance to win one since 64'.

White & Stynes sharing the ruck duties. A forward line of Neitz, Schwarz, Farmer, Lyon and a young Robbo who was keeping Shaun Smith out of the side. Shanahan & Ingerson holding down FB & CHB. And players like Tingay, Viney, Woewodin, Leonceli, Rigoni & Kowal ruuning through the midfield.

That was the most recent to get away!

So history shows that it can turn quickly.

I remember that game well. It was a seminal game for both our fortunes. They just sacked their coach, we were on top of the ladder. They played with heart, we played like millionaires. We proceeded to lose all but one game for the rest of the season and bombed out early in the finals. They became a champion side and we became a rabble.

Yep...The last 6 years nailed in one paragraph.

Yeah, but we stole '64 when they had us on toast. Perhaps the most satisfying of all?

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

    TRAINING: Wednesday 12th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
