Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Changes vs the Tigers

Fitzy was a spud pre-season, Gawn was consistently in the Casey best before we gave him a go. Jamar went up against two giants last week, and I thought competed a lot better than the other week, he'll get back to his best soon enough.

I like the idea of dropping Green, he was undisciplined and useless following up from a putrid round one. He must play at Casey. Not act as a sub, not an emergency, Casey. (Something which we should've done with Davey, how does taking him to Perth as an emergency get him back to form?)

For me Bennell stays, a big ask for him to come in and get in the best when playing as a HBF v WC in Perth but he's walking a tight rope.

Joel Mac I think it's time to drop him, I love his attitude and that he's one of few that thrives on body contact, but he continually makes the wrong decision (yes pressure makes a difference too) and I feel that he can be spared.

My changes:

INS - Tapscott, Moloney, Morton, Martin (if right)

OUTS - Joel Mac, Bail, Green, Sellar

I like Bail, but he does not seem to be right just yet. Give him a week in the VFL to get his head in gear, will be back pretty quickly. Moloney picks himself and people that feel he should re-earn his are just being silly. Big bodies are needed to get the clearances, and like it or lump it he is the best at it at our club. If Stef is right to go put him back in and drop Sellar, just because I can't see a direct opponent for him.

Morton in is a gamble, especially because I'm not a fan. BUT we have retained him and we have been repeatedly told he can be something special. Give him a job, don't complicate it or give him license to be his usual lazy self. Give him targets to meet in the game, but again make them simple. I truly feel he is so much in his own head that he forces himself to make bad decision, so send him back to basics and build it from there.

Here is my team for this week

Bennell Frawley Rivers

Bail Garland McDonald

Grimes Bartram Trengove

Petterd Watts Howe

Dunn Clark Tapscott

Jamar Jones Magner

Bate Couch Martin

Morton

In Couch Morton Tynan Tapscott

Out Green MacDonald Mckenzie Sellar

To me Grimes is a midfielder I still think the best I have seen him play was against Essendon at Visy park a few years back in the midfield. Bartram is our best defensive midfielder and Watts is a forward. We need to start winning more football in the midfield, we need someone that can stop a player, this week Cotchin.

I'm happy to take these two out of our defense we are getting smashed in the middle if we can't stop this it won't matter who is our back 6 we will get beaten, this has been proven opver the past 5 years, to me we had a real solid back 6 but we continue to lose due to our midfield being poor.

Looks pretty good to me DrD... although I would be more inclined to use Bennell as the emergency and start Morton in the back line. If Bennell is not to be the emergency, then I would prefer to see him as a crumbing forward than in the backs where he has proven himself to be pretty ineffective. His best games have been arguably played in the forward half (and yes I know (yawn!), many will say he has no best games).

Here is my team:

Bartram Frawley Rivers

Grimes Garland Morton

Bail Moloney Trengove

Petterd Dunn Howe

Watts Clark Davey

Jamar Jones Magner

Bate Couch Martin

Sub: McKenzie

In Couch Morton Davey Moloney

Out Green MacDonald Mckenzie Sellar

Bartram to stick close to Martin and keep him quiet. Grimes to do the same to Delidio. Frawly gets Jack obviously and Rivers gets Vickery.

Couch, Moloney, Trenners, Jones, Magner, Bail, Howe and Petterd (to get him into the game) to rotate through the middle with Stef and Jamar sharing their time between ruck and FF.

When resting at FF, Stef and Russian play as the deep forward with Aaron crumbing them. Clark and Watts to play the high roaming forward roll.

Monoccular, are you serious when you demand that Moloney must earn his spot. It's one thing being critical, but you surely need to keep things in perspective. He should be a walk up start if fit. Go back to Casey........surely you're kidding.

I was referring to the widely held (alleged) view that he played round 1 with an undeclared injury, just as he (allegedly) fronted up ill without telling anyone to the 186 then couldn't deliver.

IF this / these are in fact true, yes, he needs to earn the trust of the club.

Now IF in fact he was injured during the Brisbane game, or went in with a declared injury and the club accepted that risk, then yes, straight back in, and an apology from me.

Moloney definitely looked injured when i saw him running close up in the Round One game.Seemed to be carrying some sort of leg injury.

Don't mean to nit-pick but you've missed out on mentioning and therefore removing JB from the team to play the Tigers.

Sort of says it all for me. JB does not have a role to play in this side and will (MUST) be traded at years end.

I'd keep him at Casey & play him in the Mids until he starts to win the hard ball. Even the Casey 2's Mids if necessary.

I think JB is needed down back, if we move Bartram and Grimes into the midfield we need a bit of spedd to match up on the small forwards.

need to put games into Gysberts, Bennell, Blease, Strauss, Tapscott, McDonald

i reckon keep the team the same +/- 1 or 2 players for the rest of the year, let them learn the game plan with a settled 22

He only got three(3) possessions in 82% games time. How can anyone justify he keeps his position in this side.

I'd keep him at Casey seconds until years out and trade/delist him. He'd be taking a spot at Casey seniors for a Taggert or someone. Way too many chances, time to make the tough calls on these players I think.

It is more to allow Grimes and Bartram to go into our midfield, Strauss didn't play on the weekend, Nicho is injured, he servives as the only fit small defender.

My position is why waste Grimes and Bartram down back when our backline for the past 5 years has been handicapped by our midfield. It doesn't matter who plays down back whilst our midfield keeps getting smashed. Richmonds defense is bad their forward line has a couple of decent goal kickers but there midfield is good, if we can draw level in the middle we will win by 5 goals if we get beaten in the midfield we will lose by 5 goals. To me it is simple move these two into the midfield, they are wasted down back.

I think we need to physically smash them.

We are really going to miss Sylvia this weekend, he is normally the difference against the toigs. He normally has 30 and 5 goals.

For me:

Ins: Tapscott - Davey - Martin - Moloney

Out: Bennell - Joel Mac - McKenzie - Sellar

FB: Garland - Frawley - Bartram

HB: Grimes - Rivers - Tapscott

C: Jones - Trengove - Bail

HF: Howe - Watts - Petterd

FF: Davey - Clark - Green

R: Jamar - Moloney - Magner

I: Martin - Bate - McDonald

S: Dunn

Matchups:

Reiwoldt - Frawley

Bartram - Martin

Vickery - Garland

Cotchin - Jones

Deledio - Petterd

Newman - Howe

Foley - Magner

If we will all or most of those matchups.. We win.. Simple

They are the only talented players for the tigers..

Gee I hope the boys are ready for this week, a win hasn't ever been more important then this week!

I think Davey should return this week. I have a view (completely based on supposition without any evidence) that he was left out of the team because he wasn't emotionally ready to play following a variety of stressful incidents including:

  • Jurrah's problems (given the statements regularly made that Davey is a mentor to our other indigenous players)
  • the Neeld/Mifsud brouhaha
  • the passing of Jim Stynes

If he'd been dropped for form reasons I think he would have played at Casey. If I'm right, a week without further distractions (although I believe he may have met Mifsud today) may have him ready to perform. In which case I'd bring him in.

The others I'd bring in (if fit) are Martin and Moloney plus Morton.

My outs would be Sellar (if Martin returns), Dunn, Bennell and Joel MacDonald.

I'd play Davey forward most of the game but give him a few minutes each quarter in the centre just to add some pace and variety. I'd swap Morton for Joel Mac. I'd also play Bail in the backline and move Bartram to a run with role on Cotchin.

I'm also tempted to bring in Tapscott for McKenzie, but I'm not sure whether Tapscott has enough match fitness yet.

Strauss is not the saviour. Nicho is still on the rookie list and not eligble to play. You can't play Bennell as he cannot keep a opposition player quite,he won't run to position, and he only got 3 posessions, surley Davis (no games yet) Morton, even Davey would be better???

Davis, Tom McDonald & Tynan are 3 boys I have enjoyed watching this year. Wear their hearts on their sleeves - a credit to them at such a young age. Put Davis at CHB, McDonald at CHF & Tynan wherever and watch them grow. They may get beaten from time to time but at least you know they will try.

Yes I wont get into the Schwab conversation here!!! Dr Who could be the whole board in one. Hes more up with the modern game and no one else in Australia seems to be. Could prove to be an asset to the club!

Pretty sure he is contracted with Auskick until at least the end of the season, so unfortunately, won't happen.

When looking at our line up you need to consider balance, if we take Grimes and Bartram out of the back line you need to add small defenders with a bit of speed, if you replace them with Morton and Davis you have an extremely tall back 6 and small forwards will tear us apart. Strauss is no saviour but when fit he is a viable option to fill the small defender role.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
