Garry Lyon's six-month rescue mission over

Brayshaws' Helmet

Because you are a Melbourne supporter - and the truth must be the 'history of events' that is the most embarrassing to the club.

Yes, rpfc, I am a Melbourne supporter. The truth is what MFC has to face up to, no matter how unpalatable, if it is to once again become successful. I stand by my post.

Lyon also may not have been interested in coming to a team in Melbourne which would have required more time and effort compared to Freo which essentially had most of the cattle already in place to make a push for a premiership in the next few years...

I think people forget the $$$ that are potentially involved with Ross Lyon. It has been clearly highlighted he was in massive difficultiesdue to investments gone wrong. I recall reading somewhere the $$ some of the mining folk have plugged into Freo, coupling this with the above even if we did speak to RL I doubt we would have been able to match the money he was chasing.

And you will trust the version of events, spouted months after the event mind you, by the Crows-loving journo at the Advertiser over articles at the time that this was all occurring?

We have enough problems as it is without willingly piling on spurious junk thrown at us by people with agendas.

Yes people here are forgetting one important ingredient..

The W.A. mining industry has silent people within who backed Fremantle to get Ross Lyon..

We were not in the equation....Mick Malthouse was preparing for a GF at the time....

Stop burning people who do not deserve it.....By all means burn the ones who do.

The freo deal was EASILY the biggest sly deal of the last 50 years!

What about the signing of the previous years number 1 draft pick in October of the following year, behind everyone's back and then playing for a year, while knowing you are leaving and lieing to all concerned?

Yes truth, what is the truth? Certainly not the spin thats been coming out of the club in the past several years. Would make a tabloid editor blush. One day the real truth will come out about our recent past and present and for sure its going to be uglier than our current performances IMO.

Do you have any further information on that - because the Melbourne newspapers were running stories about Adelaide missing out on Neeld.

http://www.heraldsun...f-1226133579375

http://www.theage.co...0916-1kdkr.html

And then the waterboy for the Crows - Rucci - comes out months later with this 'history of events' and you immediately believe him.

Both those articles were in September last year. Caro has written in the Age this week and stated on FC that Neeld wasn't in the final group for Adelaide so it's not just Rucci. I believe her as she's the best investigative footy reporter there is and she'll be right.

We all believe what we want. I believe we need to give Neeld all the support we can, although what that means I don't know, but can't we debate the process of his appointment which seems to be flimsy at best and incompetent at worst.

The process goes to the issue of management and from what I've seen from the club since 186 our management has been poor with the manner of Bailey's sacking (not the decision) and the appointment of the coach less than worlds best practice.

Personally I'm worried about this as a few others seem to be. I'm worried because if we are poor in our processes on these critical issues what are we like on all those things we never see?

There's nothing we can do but it's a valid concern. Those that think otherwise have their head in the sand.

I'm with RPFC on this. The press and the boards at the time were awash with "Crows miss out on Neeld" stories and posts.

Now, out of the blue, an article saying they always wanted Sanderson, written by an Adelaide apologist. If it's true, why didn't Caroline Wilson include it in her article about the appointment of Neeld, an article which seemed pretty in-depth and well-researched (or at least trying to be), or why hasn't that information been made available up until now?

For some here, supporting MFC seems to consist of p***ing on the club from a great height at every opportunity - and if no opportunity presents itself, well heck, we'll just make stuff up.

Just as an aside, we are really paying a price for a crap start.

Had we beaten Brisbane, and taken a win or two from the Bulldogs, Saints or Tigers games, we would not be having these debates.

Our draw till Round 11 is a stinker ! We were never going to beat WCE (in Perth), Geelong (at Geelong), Hawthorn, Sydney (in Sydney), with potential top 4 sides in Carlton, Essendon & Collingwood to come to round out the first half of the season.

No games yet against any of GWS, GC, NM or Port Adelaide which should all be winable.

Not unreasonable to have a bit of perspective, notwithstanding last week's terrible performance

My point is that the truth is not objective. I don't care what Adelaide did or didn't do - I care about Melbourne being criticised because Adelaide apparently didn't have Neeld in their top two.

We all believe what we want. I believe we need to give Neeld all the support we can, although what that means I don't know, but can't we debate the process of his appointment which seems to be flimsy at best and incompetent at worst.

Concerned to your extent, or you have your head in the sand.

Is there a middle? Because that is where the majority of MFC fans are at. It's moot whether we didn't chase Lyon hard enough, it's moot whether Garry should have been the driver of this, it's moot that we come to the quick conclusion that we wanted Neeld.

Most of us are wondering what happened, but realise there is nothing to do about that - the die has been cast.

That is not indifference you are appalled at. It's a collective of people coming to grips with reality.

And maybe that poor process, you know minus the due diligence, was the reason we managed to acquire Craig and Misson?

We all see the grey, we are not blind, but as I said, we have enough issues without adding spurious claims from all comers.

I'm open minded and last year I certainly questioned the delay in the Board replacing Leoncelli's position, which I think led to a number of undesirable outcomes the club would wish they had their time again. I certainly don't think otherwise on your point, but I am mindful of what has been stated and what has been reported and there seems to be mixed messages.

What we've got though is a coach who is strong in mind and instruction, I think he certainly deserves better than what has been dished up to him this week. Having taken everything into account, and I mean everything. The players at his disposal especially.

I would be very surprised if we didn't put the hard word on Malthouse. I didn't hear what Garry said but I definitely think we were rebuffed - there were plenty of powerful people at the club in the M2M (Malthouse to Melbourne) movement.

Ross Lyon's agent thought he was re-signing with St Kilda - there is zero fault on our behalf that we didn't get to talk to him.

I would like just to to know if Gary actually interviewed any live human candidates or if anyone else on the Board did. And it has been reported that Schwab was the one to make the coaching offer to Neeld by phone.

I'm starting to be convinced that Gary's much heralded rescue mission was just a media event orchestrated by Schwab. And plenty of those we have had in the past few years.

Can we have a DONT LIKE box!

That's a contender, but can you think of any report saying that Lyon was in talks with Freo? His discussions went completely under the radar while many in the know were convinced of $cully's imminent departure. Furthermore, not only did Lyon screw over the Saints, he screwed over Mark Harvey.

nice guys finish last in this game, and it looks like that is what has happened to us.

It doesn't look like that to me at all.

In getting - and in some cases stealing from under the noses of our competition - the likes of Misson, Craig, Leigh Brown (highly sort-after) and Mitch Clark, the actual results of our activities would indicate the exact opposite of what you're saying. We've been nothing if not proactive.

So the idea that while we've been demonstratively aggressive in regards to the above, while when it comes to the most important FD appointment of all, the head coach, we've somehow rolled over ...well, it beggars belief.

Not to nit pick but Rucci is actually a Crows hating journo, but as a Port man he was leading the charge to get Primus out last week, all the usual stuff about his training methods, people management, he has lost the players etc. and needed another crusade this week after they made him look like a goose on the weekend. I certainly would be taking most things Rucci says with a grain of salt... and anyway true or not at the time we appointed Neeeld a lot of the so called footy experts were saying we got the best of the assistants. They are back tracking now and hopefully will again in the next few years with Neeld a success.

It is all about due dilligance, even if the sly deal was done by R.Lyon to freo the point is that all avenues should have been persued to the fullest possibility.

So, you'd prefer to fiddle while Rome burns?

truth is there is no one answer, strike whilst the iron is hot or protracted drawn-out process

and at the end of the day it will always be a risk (as has been shown many times) with either type of process

Garry Lyon talked a little about the recruitment of Mark Neeld on the footy show tonight. during it he said that he was not reccomended to get neeld by mick malthouse.

when pushed on the matter, he said he never talked to him during that process.

he also went on to say he spoke to the manager of ross lyon, but never actually spoke to ross himself.

now, this may be a stipid question, but why the hell didn't he speak to either of these people himself???

if he was prime in the decision of choosing our new coach, and did not speak to the two top candidates, what the hell was he doing during that time???

spoke to ross lyons manager only?? pick up the phone, it is not that hard.

surly it would have been more convincing to both those guys if Garry had rung them personally? I mean was garry waiting for them to ring him?

I am annoyed.

The entire process seems an entire " balls up". Who knows what really happened? Would you be as annoyed if Melbourne were 4 and 4 now? To be annoyed seems to be saying you're not happy with the current coach? If you aren't happy then that's pretty normal emotion. zip and 8 with and average losing margin of 57 points and playing a style of football without much passion, system or leadership.

As Neeld said "can turn quickly" . This comment I will hold onto because it's so true. Melbourne can't be that bad. Perhaps Neeld DOES have something up his sleeve?

I have followed Dees since 66 and defended our team with gusto in most forums, school, workplace and among friends. This forum is different. Much different. In this forum one can't open one's heart and convey exactly what we feel without the risk of suffering online bullying by Hardliners who should know better. To suggest Neeld should not be the coach is an opinion and there huge arguments supporting both sides. This forum will only hear one side. this is part of the purpose of this forum or is it simply to defend MFC position come hell or high water ie refer to any Journo as a hasbeen etc if they don't tow the demonland line ie Caro, Sheehan, King, Roos, Thomas, Whover else.

The past few days I have drawn the conclusion we have appointed MN now and have to move on and support him.

Time will tell.

For me for what its worth I feel the appointment was rushed however we must get behind the Guy. I don't hate him.

A few in this forum need to rid the massive CHIP's on shoulders and not simply label Journo's as [censored] simply because they don't agree with populist view in Demonland and then jump up in and laud another Journo when he writes a positive article about Melbourne. In other words the Journo is only any good if compliments whatever the MFC is doing.

Not short of Bullies in this forum along with long term Demonlanders prepared to get nasty with insults if we don't tow the line and agree with the that particular persons view.

Blues are well down on best form right now. On the eve of the match I have recollections of Dees V Blues post Tsunami when Dees Banded together for Troy Broadbridge. Lets hope for a repleat of that outcome because if the group truly does support Neeld as they say in the media then should go to the wire! Go Dees!

Another 10 goal+ loss against a team also well down on confidence won't cut it.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
