The National Draft's done and dusted but it ain't over until it's over.

The Preseason and Rookie Drafts are less than a fortnight away although the former is not going to provide much excitement with only three clubs currently eligible to take part:-

1. Greater Western Sydney (who else?)

2. Port Adelaide

3. Fremantle

One would think that these picks will be filled by recycled players like Zac Dawson who is likely to go to the Dockers.

The Rookie Draft should be a different matter altogether. The Demons have four picks and some handy names remain available for selection.

The biggest name not picked was Brendan Fevola

(not suggesting that we would be interested but another club might well be) whose draft hopes seem to be fading.

A few potentially exotic selections like Waylen Manson missed out but a few other "name" prospects missed out.

This bloke is IMO the biggest shock - Shane Nelson but here's a list of some of the more prominent names who were overlooked (HUN Pick Me players linked where applicable):-

Myles Bolger

Andrew Boseley

Michael Bussey

Jack Crisp

Julian Dobosz

Max Duffy

Sam Frost

Lewis Hender

Matthew Jacquier

Tom Lee

Michael Mascoulis

Brody Mihocek

Nick Murphy

Fletcher Roberts

Jai Sheahan

Lee Spurr

Marley Williams

Josh Waldhuter

Marley Williams

Luke Wilson

... and then there's Tom Couch who has been training with the Dees and his former Magpie VFL team mate Tom Sundberg.

Please add others if you know them ...

Brett O'Hanlon.

Also I was surprised to see Tom Curran get picked up. Might be another time where the surname gets you a chance before other players.

reminds me of Nick Jewell, son of former tigers coach Tony, who I played with. He got picked up, despite an average time at the Under 18's and played 1 game for the Tigers and never did much, much better cricketer!

Surely we will look at Zylus Manson now as a rookie? We also should try to pick up a small forward and a speedy outside midfielder. I'd also like to see another tall versatile to develop on the list. The above would well and truly cement our list in virtually all aspects. However, I would like to see a quality running midfielder / wingman in next year's draft. A taller Blease would be brilliant.

Jai Sheehan struggled early last season but then Aaron Greaves who was coaching the Falcons turned his season around so that after a poor start to the year he ended up kicking the second most goals in the TAC Cup. The question mark seems to be in regards to his application not his ability and since Greaves is now at the demons along with strict task masters in Neeld and Misson he may well continue to develop in the demons program

There are quite a few there that have potential.

If we can rookie at least 3 of those named in that list I'd be extremely happy!

Personally, I like the sound of Jack Crisp (a tough hard tackling midfielder) as well as Jai Sheahan (a tall forward with exquisite foot skills) and Andrew Boseley (a really competitive defender who has lots of character and determination).

A talented quick, crumbing small forward would come in handy too!

Anyways, I'll leave it up to Barry Prendergast and the rest of the MFC recruiting staff to make the correct decision.

I hope we take a project small forward and another project ruck to bring on slowly through the Rookies.

At the end of 2012 season we may be in a position where we have to choose between some of our Rucks, so getting a year of VFL reserves into a young Ruck could be handy this time next Year.

Sheahan to train with us apparently.

Sheahan's TAC Cup coach is now an assistant at the MFC so it looks as if he wants to give his former player every chance to make an AFL list.

I think the pick of the players not selected would have to be small man Shane Nelson. He looks a likely type to me and I'd be happy to have him on the list.

Could be a bit like Evans last year, I'd be happy if we got both he and Sheehan.

I don't think Nelson fits the criteria that Neeld & Co are looking for, big bodied strong midfielder

But he's quick isn't he. Surely Neeld could see his value as a similar player to Jarrad Blair. Can cover the ground and play small forward and midfield and with a whole bunch of limited players left it might be nice to take the footballer out of the bunch.

JCB read yesterday's (Thurs) Hun article on Manson and see if you are still interested - Will a goanna hunter be AFL's next big thing in the national draft?

Sounds like he would be much harder to tie down in Melbourne than Aussie.

I'd still give him a go- we nurtured Newton for 7 years, we supported Wonna for 2, we have had LJ unfit for 3 years now, and I believe he is worth a punt.As a rookie, we only have to have him for a year, if he doesn't make it. I thick he is worth the punt, although WJ seems to have gone off him.See you Monday at training?

How about Patrick Rose from Port Melbourne! Small forward who kicked 79 yes 79 goals this year. If any player in the under 18 kicked that many most people would be creaming their jeans over him. HOW many did Patton kick this year?

Now we have 1 possibility 2 big talls in the forward line it cries out for a class small forward.

Rookie him, the last small we got from Port if I remember right was Davey, not a bad pick up.

John McCarthy.

Super kid, got some real talent and just couldn't get a consistent game due to collingwoods mids.

Training with the tigers, but neeld would know him inside n out?

Mind-boggling reasoning.

Those years haven't been so bloody successful for the Melbourne Football Club.

We've wasted years on players that weren't up to it in the past, so we should continue to do so with a longshot that can barely get through the draft combine?

Mental.

I'd be looking at Nelson and Marley Williams.

just maybe as a rookie. he would need to convince club he is prepared to be full-time and fair dinkum.

I don't mind the sound of this guy, if we're going for a small forward. I thought he might get picked up in the ND.

Source - Phantom Drafts on Bigfooty - I think it's Knightmare's:

Haiden Schloithe (WA - Fwd)

Height: 179cm, Weight: 72kg, DOB: 16/06/1993

Recruited from: South Fremantle Football Club

Style: Mark LeCras

Player comparison:

Range: 40-rookie

Profile: Really good user of the footy. Looks dangerous whenever he gets near it. Good reader of the play. Has that radar where he just knows exactly where the goals are. Tackling great and in combination with his speed is a major weapon in his game. Looks incredibly draftable. Has nice strength through the hits which makes him hard to tackle. Is allot quicker than I thought running a 2.80 over 20m at the state screenings and also has a nice running vertical jump which is another nice surprise. Has really impressed me and stood out in the couple of games I’ve seen of him. Can play up the field but just love what I’ve seen of him as a forward! What he needs to work on is endurance, endurance testing at the draft combine was poor and is what will see him slide but don’t let that discourage you. Can absolutely play.

I'd still love to see Aaron Hall as a rookie. While we don't know how well his game would stand up to AFL level opposition, he has electrifying speed and he can kick goals. He would fit right in as a small forward.

Curran was far from average in the Tac Cup this year.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
