I was uncomfortable about Scully from the day we drafted him. Even before that, my intuition was concerned about him, for some reason I don't quite understand. I just get this sense of wariness.

I felt the same way. I remember seeing him interviewed on the Footy Show a few months before we drafted him, and even then I was concerned about how unenthused he sounded about the prospect of joining Melbourne.

I thought after few years at the club he might feel differently, but as someone posted earlier, it never really felt like he played for Melbourne.

I put his introvertness down to shyness rather than unenthuisiasm.

It will be easily proven next season by how he acts and reacts on and off the field - if he turns into a Beamer then your are 100% right

has anyone thought that this hole scenario would of played out differently if we picked trengove number 1 and scully number 2, would GWS of chased after the number 2 pick? trengove signed the three year deal early and probably would of told GWS f off, then would they of targeted scully? they wouldn't of got as much media attention and scully probably wouldnt of been offered as much money without the number 1 draft tag.

The Legal Profession could get involved in this whole fiasco and they would have a field day .

Phil Scully's salary being counted in the salary cap is the laughable bit . And boy , didn't the AFL act quick on that one .

What , do they think it makes it "all better now" ?

We've all put so much emotional energy into this whole affair and in the end it was a total stitch up ! Fixed to high heaven .

And what about the division it caused amongst Demon fans ? I feel for the Scully supporters - they were supporting a lie .

I smelt a rat early and thought he was "bailing" but it's not about me , it's about the Club

The Club was hoodwinked

The club wasn't hoodwinked, niave supporters were. The club played the game as layed down by the AFL and received it's reward. We got the same as Geelong got for Ablett for an unproven 20 year with a seriously dodgy knee and people around here want more. People still don't seem to get it. The AFL is no different to any other big corporation. It's run by predominantly fat men with massive ego's who believe that money = power and they'll do whatever it takes to stay on top. GWS, FFS, why bother!

The fact that his dad has to be included under the salary cap indicates that it was an inducement for the Merc's signing

This indicates that there was an approach before what was stated this deal was hatched during the china trip or even before. Guarantee it.

We have won in this one we have cut loose a guy and family with absolutely no integrity.

Hopefully the ex CEO is disgruntled and spills the beans on this farce.

MFC next time make a stand and show that we will not act like wet nurses.

This is assuming that your quote was "gospel" - Plenty would have disagreed with you at the time ...........Did you know about the Phil Scully appointment back on March 3 ?

When I say the Club was Hoodwinked I'm also talking about the 37,000 plus members and tens of thousands of other supporters which make up the Club .

Are you absolutely sure that the Club "played along with the charade" ? A lot of us feel hoodwinked .

Plenty did disagree with me at the time. "Where's yer source?!?" and "Unsubstantiated!" and "Speculation!" and so on, and so forth, blah, blah.

My information was solid - not speculation.

Where is $cully now?

The club played the game precisely as Roost It said:

Based on the behavior of the individuals in question, I have serious doubts as to the veracity of the knee injury with kept him out of games and seemingly kept him from having a decent crack in the games he did play in this past season.

If you can be bothered, go back and have at his original March press conference video and view it in the light of what has transpired since there. Cold, calculating and deceitful are words that spring readily to mind.

Barry Prendergast gets a pass on this one. Even Sigmund Freud would have had trouble calling this kid's bluff back at the 2009 draft camp psyche tests.

Happy to dislike the Scully's with a passion - but I still like a certain amount of logic to arguments - the inclusion of Big Phil in the cap absolutely indicates that the AFL consider his job as part of the inducement to get Tom to GWS but care to explain how this indicates the timing of the approach ? You can believe that it happened yonks ago and there is good arguments to say it did but the inclusion of the wage in the TTP indicates zero about the timing - this aint the smoking gun.

Just a reminder: Play the ball and not the man.

Noted.

Forwarded to the $cully's and GWS.

I tend to agree with you here, But what was in it for the MFC...How did we benefit from this Farce?

This was a number one draft pick that we have sadly thrown away. I do not ever want to go through that Tanking Shite again...As a supporter it made me feel sick in the guts...and after all this certainly was not worth it.

Fair enough - though my comments are in based , in part , on the events of the last 24 hours - and now that Holmes has been sacked ............

If your not convinced by now you never will be

Look at the situation in it's entirety

every facet has been orchestrated from maybe the outset

this is another domino in a long line that indicate there was never any doubt he was going

maybe just maybe the fact everyone who said he was signed back in February/march were right

How can you possibly have any faith in this guys integrity when the facts all point elsewhere?

You misread and are misquoting me - There is plenty to suggest that this was all put to bed well before the "party line" timeline - I will ask you again - how does the announcement of PS's job with GWS and the placing PS's salary into GWS TTP tell you that the deal was done months ago in any way shape or form ? it indicates that the offer to Tom was more than salary to tom - this is another inducement to move - thats it

For the record again - I heard what he said at his March press conference regarding how to resist the big money and how he wanted to be a one club player - he went back on what he said at the conference therefore zero intergrity in my eyes and may he burn in hell

Posted (edited)

According to the Age the AFL have had enough of the GWS Sh#tting on their investment - "Dave Matthews, currently the AFL's general manager of national and international development, will be the new chief executive of the Giants."

Too right. I mean seriously this kid and his Dad couldn't have insulted the Melbourne Football Club more if they just dropped their strides and defecated all over Ron Barrassi's #31 jumper live on national Tv.

The club, particularly Schwab, handled it extremely well in the circumstances and they should be congratulated for not dropping their bundle.

The Legal Representation of GW$ is no doubt headed up by the great Saul Goodman, who I consider to be "The Lawyer's Lawyer"!

Anyone not familiar with Saul's squeaky clean legal work....He makes Arthur Daley look like a model citizen!!

Absolutely...But in the light of the last 24 hours the Club has every right to ask some very hard questions for both itself & the Members..Not only "Lucky Phil" but now the CEO has been booted, this is a Farce....and we copped the brunt of it.

2 wasted years i call. Nothing less.

How did we benefit? Can't be sure yet but hopefully this sorry tale galvanizes our club (I think you'll agree it has somewhat already) and that we are able to snare a couple of quality young players with those components picks.

I sometimes think the Scully saga/farce was the good kick up the bum Melbourne had to have.

C'mn Guys/Gals,

Forget this T%#D. Just Build a Bridge and get over it.

I think most people are over it. More to the point, would anyone change the circumstances now if they could ? Would they unwind the clock if they had the chance, or would they prefer the status quo ? It's highly unlikely Melbourne would have landed Clark if Scully had stayed and obviously wouldn't have two first round draft picks, which may be used in next year's super duper draft. Not to mention the massive coin he'd be on when in reality he's largely unproven.

I for one wouldn't change a thing.

It's ultimately speculation in absence of proof but there is too much that has been wrangled to believe the official line and this new piece of the puzzle

hasn't been cooked in advance.

multiple deals, inducements for family this I don't think was done during the end of season others indicated that the approach was earlier than stated.

I think the fact the father was given a job with little credibility or credentials further lends credence to deals being sorted long before the official line

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
