The word on Brad Green

Maybe next year

Recommended Posts

All of the Green hate in this thread is disgraceful. FFS give the guy a break and sign him up!

I dont think there is hate - there is just not a whole lotta love.

I think people are get confused between his playing which was average and his leadership, which was much less than average.

There is little doubt that if he walked from the club now he would be snapped up by another club in a heartbeat. He did not have a good year but lets not throw the baby out with the bath water. When we look at players like Yze, Robbo and white - you could see that the end was neigh. I dont feel the same way about Green - I think he has plenty to offer - just not as a captain

As the creator of this topic, all I really wanted to know is if there was any word from Brad Green. I did not intend this to be a debate on whether he deserves 1 or 2 years. I am guessing from the responses that we have not heard anything. I would have thought our captain would give a speech at our B&F but seems like I am wrong. Not sure what that means but it would be interesting to know if any other captains did not talk at their respective club's B&F.

Anyway, time will tell.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Ps. For the record I think we should offer 2 years on reduced pay and indicate that he will receive no special treatment. If his form is bad he gets dropped. I would also take the captaincy off him and give it to Moloney. Alternatively, if he wants 1 year he can keep the captaincy provided the players endorse it.

I disagree with the first bit and agree with Nut...theres just a whole lot of indifference really. Weve been burnt many times at thi sclub and possibly a 1 year policy is a bit too black and white and after all we're Red and Blue !!

I am however curious as to your notion of giving him a break ? This is , in the big washup, about someone beiing paid truck loads to perform at an elite level. Either you can or you cant ( or dont ) . If you dont then there will be people who will ask legitmate questions as to whether a player ought to continue or not. Its got to be on the merit of the circumstances and that goes for all players really. Are you suggesting theres some sort of altruistic leniency to be dished out ?

I agree. His drop in form/output from '10 wiould have been far less obvious if he wasnt the captain. In heindsight he was probably not the best chocie for captain, but he's still in the best 22.

If i had to coose 1 player in the team to take a set shot from anywhere in the 50, B.Green would be my choice every day of the week.

Whats possibly even worse DWA...is that Green WAS the best choice ( at that time )

Choosing now is a different fish.

It's not hate at all...it's discussing whether Brad Green will help get the Club into September or not...This club has got to fire, otherwise Free Agency will kill it.

Is Brad going to improve on last year??? With a 1 year contract we will find out.

We as supporters should "give him a break". The club should obviously hold him to task RE his form etc, but as diw hard red and blue fans we should give him the benifit of the doubt that 2010 was a one off, and get behind him for season 2012

Having just read the thread, I see no hate - just reasonable arguments about the length of any contract that may be offered to him.

FWIW i reckon he should 'relinquish' the captaincy (and thus have the onus of kicking captain's goals removed), and be offered a 1x1 contract.

If he wishes to leave, we wish him the best and wave goodbye.

He's been a wonderful servant of the club, but unfortunately a terrible on-field leader.

For all we know that is exactly just what the club has done and he is procrastinating over it......or on the other hand....??? We are just guessing.

2010 and earlier I would agree with you wholeheartedly. This year I held my breath when he was shooting for goal. Just like we did when his mate Bruce was having a shot. Just suddenly lost confidence in himself I guess. Hope he can get back to being a 'dead eye dick' again. Not being captain would help.

No shame in discussing Green-forget club loyalties and sentimentality.

If he goes then he will have nobody to blame but himself.

We have to put the organization above the individual every single time.

He had a great 2010 and a shocking 2011 .

previously he was good without reaching the elite level.

If he wants too much he may have to go .

Another club will pay him.

He's had 12 years at the MFC.

We have not made one error in delisting yet so relax on the loyalty bit and concentrate on turning this team into a machine devoid of sentiment and weakness .If he goes , he goes .

He's still a senior player, with natural talent, with a few more good years in him. We are in extremely short supply of senior players, period. Have we learned nothing from the J Mac fiasco?

He had a bad year. It happens.

To give him the boot would be an enormous bullet to the foot IMO, and that foot already has quite a few mangled toes hanging off it.

Dead set, some of you are the most gutless cowards in the world.

Brad Green has given much more to this club than you ever will.

And to think, many of you have been cheerleaders for number 31 all year, even though all with half a brain knew he was gone and that he had no pulse for this club.

There is a reason the MFC is a lightweight club - and it's not because of Jim Stynes or Cameron Schwab or Brad Green. Take a look in the mirror some of you.

Sign him up MFC. He deserves it - don't listen to the Kansas end, bottom of the pyramid slice of our supporter base.

If you dont want the MFC to be as you suggest "a lightweight club" then when we discuss what he has given the club the only thing we should be looking at is what he has given the club onfield.

Many years of good service without ever taking the next step to the elite. A pearler 2010 season where he was unlucky to miss AA selection. An ordinary 2011 - not as bad as some might suggest but made infinitely worse due to his poor leadership and captaincy.

So he is 30 plus and on balance absolutely deserves another contract - but like every other footballer on our list it has to be a contract that reflects his value to the club, his age and unfortunately in Brad's case it will reflect his poor 2011.

And before slinging off that Brad Green has given more to the club than any of us. I think you may need reminding that he is PAID HANDSOMELY to give so much to the club as are all the footballers. ( and people are rightly questioning if he earned the money he was paid this year). We give to the club in terms of support each week, memberships and money when the tin is rattled. Many others give their time and services freely to the club - none of us here are PAID to do this. So no, Brad Green or any other footballer on our list has not given more to this club than the loyal supporters on this board. (grrr)

Mighty strong words.

I'm wondering what you are so horrified by?

The questions being asked of his captaincy or the fact that many on here would prefer to have only a one year deal given to Brad?

Personally, I am happy to give him two years, as I know he can offer more than 2011 in the next two years, but I don't want him to be captain.

I just get sick of all the keyboard heroes mindlessly bagging some of our players.

Brad Green did not have a consistent year in 2011. Everyone knows that, including him I expect. To be fair, he was not the only player in 2011 to fail to play consistently good football in the way the club would like/expect throughout the year. He also did not seem to handle the Captain gig all that well.

But to say he should either accept a year deal or essentially get lost is IMO outrageous.

He's clearly still a bloody good player who has loads to offer this club. I also do not want to see the club mishandle another (potentially former) Captain's contract so soon after the Junior debacle. Quite simply, it does not have a good effect on list.

Green is a loyal MFC man - he is hard at it and he has regularly turned games on his own boot. I still don't know how he missed AA selection in 2010 - many of his performances were genuinely elite. These facts seem to be missing on some here.

And yep - that frustrates me. Apologies if I expressed that in too harsh a manner.

Yes, it leaves a bad taste.

An aspect of the reason why I gave he-who-must-not-be-named so much time and belief.

With that said - it's cutthroat and Brad is the leader of a team that was just pathetic at times this year.

He's gonna cop some more before he has the chance to turn things around.

I think he has two years left at least but I can understand those who don't and I can understand the desire to give a one-year contract.

Loyalty is lost on some fans when it comes to players showing it, and that frustrates me too.

With that said - I care more about the club than an individual player's loyalty and if Brad is captain next year I will start the year frustrated and aggravated.

I think you will find the MFC is well across sites like this and will be well aware of the general groundswell of feeling regarding Green's captaincy; he will not be captain next year.

As for loyalty, call me old fashioned, but I have always been of the belief that loyalty is a two way street. Up until this year, Brad had put in 10 good and at times excellent, seasons of football, placing his body on the line (literally) and despite what people in their ignorance like to mistakenly call "holding the club to ransom", that is, going through contract negotiations in the past, he has remained a loyal club stalwart. Surely he has done enough to warrant our respect and more importantly the respect of the club.

Football is about risk taking and just as Green has on many occasions put his body in the firing line (with dire results), maybe the club should return the favour and offer a two year contract. In my opinion, we lose absolutely NOTHING and risk absolutely NOTHING by doing so.

Agree on 90% of what you say - The Junior situation was handled badly in as much as they should have made their intentions clearer earlier that he was not going to get another year. I still think the decision was right. I have no problem with the exiting of our other players like Miller, Wheatley, White, Robbo - in one or two of the cases I think the club could be accused of being slow to act on these players.

We are fortunate that our club ( all clubs) dont operate as suggested by many on this site - "take it or rack off" - the conversations are a little more civilised than that with some give and take. The club did stick to their guns with Cameron Bruce and offer no guarantees past a one year contract and rightly so. Cam said the offer was disrespectful to him - basically that translates to " i am worth more years than you are offering" - sad but that happens. In Cam's case the money at MFC was much better than the Hawks - I fear he has rolled the dice and lost. Who knows what they will/have offered Brad Green. I think the point that needs to be clearly made is there are only problems with players when the player and the clubs expectations are not in alignment - of course there are always the ambit claims but one hopes that a middle ground can be reached.

I agree that Brad has a lot to offer ( outside being a captain) and as an elder of the club if he can wind back the clock one year he can do acts that set an example for the group. I hope the club and Brad can reach an understanding.

If an ageing out of form captain is prepared to "walk" for not being offered a two year deal instead of one, then he clearly is not the leader we need!
