Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The word on Brad Green

Maybe next year

We are fortunate that our club ( all clubs) dont operate as suggested by many on this site - "take it or rack off" - the conversations are a little more civilised than that with some give and take. The club did stick to their guns with Cameron Bruce and offer no guarantees past a one year contract and rightly so. Cam said the offer was disrespectful to him - basically that translates to " i am worth more years than you are offering" - sad but that happens. In Cam's case the money at MFC was much better than the Hawks - I fear he has rolled the dice and lost. Who knows what they will/have offered Brad Green. I think the point that needs to be clearly made is there are only problems with players when the player and the clubs expectations are not in alignment - of course there are always the ambit claims but one hopes that a middle ground can be reached.

At least Bruce's situation offers a bit of a "the grass isn't always greener" scenario for Green to observe. Bruce will likely be delisted by the Hawks in the coming days with little fanfare or any care from Hawks fans after failing to meet the games played criteria to trigger the second year in his deal. I don't know how Bruce feels about the way his career has panned out, but surely there must be some sense of disappointment at leaving a club he'd spent 11 years at only to flame out in one season in another jumper.

Obviously, late career changes aren't always a disastrous idea (Luke Ball, Stan Alves being some examples), but hopefully Green's seen the way things have turned out for his mate and can sort something out sooner rather than later.

If an ageing out of form captain is prepared to "walk" for not being offered a two year deal instead of one, then he clearly is not the leader we need!

Correct, he is not the leader we need, but he IS a player we need and he should be offered two years if that is what it takes to keep him. As I said in another post, it seems Brad is the Mike Hussey of the MFC!

I just get sick of all the keyboard heroes mindlessly bagging some of our players.

1 year max.

He can walk if he wants.

His time is up, but some mindlessly defend Green because they are too scared to face the reality that he is past his best, and is now nothing but an a very average player with poor leadership skills.

But keep resorting to insults.

You seem to consider the likes of RB to be resorting to insults, yet you make accusations of mindlessness on the part of those who disagree with your point of view? And that is ALL it is... a point of view based on one bad season where Green still manged to rank 11th in the Blueys by far better judges of player input and performance than either you or I and still managed to kick 37 goals in what was essentially a year affected by the weight of the captaincy!

Maybe, maybe Not. His soft at the contest style, if it continues is a Bad example to the young ones.

IMO if we are to try to get forward spots for the likes of Howe, Petterd, Jurrah, Watts, Sylvia, Bennell, Cook, Fitzpatrick, Mcdonald, Lawrence, Then we may Not need him for 2 years as a list clogger.

It's Time Brad, to put up, Or shut up, & off.

Sorry, but I really have to take issue with the "soft at the contest" comment. Yes he had a bad year, but Green has NEVER been soft! I know that statistics can be misleading, but if we look at this year, he actually increased the number of tackles from 58 to 61 while playing one less game this year... sure maybe they weren't as effective as in previous years, but he was definitely NOT shirking the contest. Additionally, his disposals and marks were pretty much similar to 2010 and the only area we could probably say he obviously fell down in, was his kicking in front of goal... but he still managed 37 compared to 55 last year - not a bad return by any means.

One of the problems Green had this year was that he was being instructed to play forward and himself lamented the fact that he was being restricted in his access to the ball as a result. If the ball is not being delivered to the forwards, then of course, being played forward, he is going to look bad and his effectiveness as a leader is limited.

Bad call. There is a difference between indifferent form, being fumbly and not holding marks - and going missing from general play as opposed to being soft at the contest. I strongly disagree with him being soft at the contest. The worst example he set this year was not stepping up to the plate when he was most needed. ( he wasnt Robinson Crusoe in this regard)

There is one major difference between Mike Hussey & Brad Green - Hussey was actually IN FORM when axed from the Australian team.

Im glad the club doesnt jump ship quite as quickly as you have on players - for the record - his poor season netted 37 goals - the 18th best in league - given that there are 6 forwards in each team - that places him in the top 18%.

You may be right that his time is up but to say people are mindless defending him because of being too scared to face reality that he is past his best. - there is opinion and there is just wow and this falls into the category of just wow.

Fortunately - the similarity is that Hussey and Green havent been axed from either of their teams.

Actually, my reference to Hussey related to the fact that when he went through a bad patch, and being in the "older" bracket, everyone was calling for him to be axed... fortunately the powers that be in the cricketing world persevered and he has since repaid their faith.

"mindless" was purely the term used in the post I was replying to.

Yes, we all have opinions.

Mine is that if he doesn't want 1 year, he can have none.

End of.

Ahhh I see... that makes it ok then.

Anyway, I will trust the people that matter in the club to make the correct decision, whatever it may be,

Definitely worth 2 years. If the Eagles had of applied this type of approach with their veterans over the last couple of years they may well have lost 1 or all of Embley, Glass, Cox, Lynch and Kerr and they all had excellent seasons. Good enough to propel them to a prelim.

Brad has been in our best 5 players for for a long time. A 2 year deal for a bloke that won the B&F last year and staved off lucrative offers from Collingwood and Sydney not that long ago to stay with Melbourne when he was in his prime and we were cellar dwellers is hardly selling the farm.

As for captaincy, I think he in consultaton witht he FD has earned the right to determine whether it is in the best interests of him as a player and the club to continue as captain in 2012 or handover to someone else.

I agree with this. We are too quick to judgement on this site at times (which I think was Ron B's point).

I agree with al lbut the determination of the captiancy. its not for him do say really. The FD ought to hold sway here and at the moment it ought to be just Neeld

When you get to a certain age it is reasonable that players move to one year contracts. Brent Harvey has been on them for ages. Why? Because in a high intensity sport like AFL your performance can drop off really quickly if you lose a bit of pace.

Green showed signs this that he was starting to lose a bit of pace and, if it worsens, then he'll struggle top play AFL at all. A one year deal is reasonable and certainly not an insult to Green. If he continues to contribute next year then he'll get another deal.

I understand the sentiment but please don't equate Green to Kerr, Embley, Cox, or Glass. The are on another level.

We should keep him, he has been a good contributer to the club.

However, he shouldn't decide with the FD whether he keeps the captaincy; Maxwell has to win his captaincy every year and the FD should, in consultation with a blind vote from the players, decide who is going to lead us in 2012.

i think green is as good as Embley. before this year, the only good game he ever played was when he jagged the norm smith

Isn't this the way the 'Leading Teams' program works (or whatever it's called).

I have a feeling with the new coach we may see a new leadership program installed.

I'm liking the sounds of the 'My Way or the Highway' program.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
