I could barely disagree more with this post.

Green may stay, but not as captain.

Trengove may be young, but he is much older than Colin Sylvia in every facet other than time spent on this earth.

I understand (and agree) with what you're saying re Sylvia/Trengove - however what I meant was I don't think it's fair to put it on him this early in his career. Future captain written all over him, but not as early as next year imo. And I get the feeling Sylvia would step up to the plate if given the role (I know, he won't get it and doesn't deserve it based on past behaviour).

Happy to be proven wrong, but I just can't see them taking it off Green.

All this carp about captaincy being a burden is just that absolute carp! A natural guts and determination leader just leads and the rest follow - there is no burden whatsoever if anything it just gives a bit more steely determination. JT already had this by the bucketfull, it will fit like a glove. Give him Beamer, Frawley, Sylvia and the Russian as seargents to help out and the rest will follow. The kid will be better for it, the supporters will love a 10 year captain, number 9 jumpers will once again sell out - the will be balance in the force!

JT plays like a captain already, but I'd prefer letting the kid play with freedom for a while without the burden of the captaincy, and make no mistake, where the club is at atm it is a burden. If we have another bad year next year, I seriously hope not but we'll see, the captain has to deal with a lot of external pressures and no doubt the media would jump on him because he'd be such a young captain.

Beamer for me, JT and Chip (who also plays like a natural leader) VC, Jamar, Rivers, Jonesy and Watts round out the group. I've take Grimes out so the poor bugger can focus on getting out on the park, once out there there's no stopping him leading by example!

Beamer has had an up and down year, he in particular has struggled against top opposistion because he is not an elite player who can shake a good tagged. BUT he loves the club, and he isn't afraid to do the team lifting tough stuff. I think he'd enjoy fulfilling his boyhood dream of captaining the Dees.

I think they should start fresh with a new coach, and a new leadership group and plan to have them both for 5 years.

Jack Grimes is my vote.

This old thing.

Beamer is the only captain out there at the moment.

Anyone who voted Grimes has put the cart waaaaaaaayyyyyy before the horse. I'd prefer it if our captain was a certainty to actually have an AFL career. He's obviously got a lot of potential but he currently averages eight games a season. He's got a total of 32 games to his name - he's had no continuity whatsoever.

Trengove may or may not be ready to lead the side, but at least you could say that he's a well established player in the side.

Id be right there with you

if only he hadn't been kept statless for a half against geelong

I'd do away with a captain next year and make 8 guys captain

why no-one offers the pre-requisite ability to lead by example

Trengove sure in 2-3 years time

If no one else I'd give it to Chip at least he is assured of getting a game.

Id only do that when Green retires though.

If we have joint captains it is because Trengove needs help.

I don't want to see our NQR 'senior' player share their inadequacies as captains.

And your first line grates with me...

'This terrible situation of our older players feeling unwanted.'

Why do we care if they feel this way?

They were given the leadership of the club and they have failed totally, destructively.

I don't care if they complain to the board - it is evident that the FD is right to push the younger talent ahead of the older players.

I have said this often - we have to move toward our future, and give them the reigns. The older players can stay and contribute, but they have failed to drive this club and this club has got to get past them.

Couldn't agree more.

I would like to see Trengove get it but perhaps he's a bit young, so I have voted for Sylvia as it could be the making of the man.

Both should be in the leadership group but I think Green should take it on for one more year

Brent Moloney for captain. Trengove his deputy. Jones, Rivers, Frawley in the extended LG.

I shudder to think how much worse we would have been if we didn't have Beamer this year. He's our only real leader at the moment. Ironically, in the 186pt drubbing he was ill and we were basically playing with 17 men even with him out there. He had 0 possession and was subbed at half time, and the rest is history. What i'm trying to say is: No Moloney = No Melbourne. Consider these stats i just dug up:

This year Beamer ranks at the club:

1st in Contested Possesions (71 more than Sylvia ranked 2nd, 98 than Jones ranked 3rd)

1st in Clearances (+83 on McKenzie ranked 2nd with a total of 61)

1st in Tackles (+14 on Sylvia ranked 2nd)

2nd in Inside 50's (-2 behind Sylvia)

2nd in Disposals (-10 behind Jones)

1st in Kicks

2nd in Handballs

Equal 4th in Running Bounces

5th for 1%ers

Equal 5th for Clangers (11 less than Sylvia ranked 1st. Trengove, Jones, Martin and Green have all turned it over more this year)

The contested possession and clearance stats are the most staggering. 83 more clearances (more than double) the next best player McKenzie! He has 102 more clearances than Jones, who many regard as one of our inside hardball winners (played on the wing a lot this year). Games nowadays are won in the contested possesion, clearances, and tackles being the KPIs to look out for. Beamer leads from the front here and even if for only a year or two until Trenners/Grimes/Watts et al are ready, he must be in the box seat for the skipper role next year. Brad Green is clearly not a captain's bootlace. It's hurting the team's performace and it has hurt Brad Green's reputation as a very good AFL footballer. Today's form from Greeny was a nice change and what we need from him every week.

Yes, Brent is a good player.

And you say 'No Brent, No Melbourne.'

I say that when Melbourne goes missing - Brent is one of the major culprits.

Excluding that Geelong game where he was ill - Brent averages less than 19 touches a game in all the games we have lost by more than 20 points. That's 9 games.

But who's helping him? Where are the quality back ups to cover Beamer when tagged out? He's had more than double the clearances of the next best mid at Melbourne. Obviously opposition teams will try to nulify him at stoppages. If they succeed, we lose badly, simply because there is no one else to pick up the slack if he has a bad one... Even in those poor matches you mention, he's averaging almost 6 clearances a game. It's an unhealthy reliance on one player we have for midfield supply, and one that probably doesn't/hasn't happened at any other clubs this year.

JT and Garland led the way today for leadership. Moloney is so unaccountable it is disgusting. Obviously, he's not the only culprit but he loves running towards the goal, but rarely runs the other way. Should not be captain.

This belief is why we get frontrunners at the club.

It is not the bloke who performs only when he wants to - it is the fault of others?

Brent is a quality player - but don't kid yourself the way I did about Brad Green.

He doesn't play well in the games we need him the most - he isn't consistent.

And he isn't going to be a great captain.

He may be the best of bad choices, but if that is the case - have shared captaincy and give it to the kids.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
