Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

It's all just a bit of brinkmanship, Viney will be a Demon, have no doubt.

GC don't need another 18 year old mid-fielder, they're set in that department.

We've got picks 3 and 4 and other than Viney we're not going for any more kiddies, they'll be used as bait to secure players from other clubs still under contract

This

Sounds like a very likely scenario.

Pick 4 would be good bait to lure a player like Dawes as well

Pick 4 for the Dawes. That's a [censored] for brains comment

Good on you Jack have faith in your ability and throw a spanner in the works, Gold Coast & Gws can now think along the lines of Melbourne may have told Viney we wont take you at 3, so be prepared to go north if they really want you.

No the ball is in the Suns & Giants court do they take the risk

Many on here slated the club for the way they played out the Scully saga, but in hindsight it was perfectly orchestrated and we ended up with the same compensation as the Cats did for the best player in the AFL

Agree. Looks to readers like he is a bit [censored] with the club, because they haven't guaranteed to take him and he is telling them take me or lose me. Throws the cat among the pigeons.

There would be outcries of draft tampering and invetsigations by the AFL is that was a public statement.

If the clubs believe the kid, then it removes the element of game playing.

All this says to me is that the club is trying a tactic of distancing itself from Viney.

The result of which leaves Viney saying that he will go wherever he ends up and that, by extension, the Dees won't pick him at #3.

Given he's rated (from what I've heard) between 5-9, I think that this is an attempt by the club to make other clubs think we'd let him go to them if they bid.

Have to say I agree with you. There is nothing to be gained from committing to him. Effectively he is saying if the MFC pass him up he is there for a GWS/GC. Do they really want him that bad??!!

Very odd give the supposed mind games we all assumed the club was playing. You would think they would inform Jack, and Todd for that matter, how they want it handled, because this seems to fly in the face of what we thought was going on.

This article doesn't fly in the face of what we think is going on.

What we all think is going on is that the club are trying to get Viney in the second round.

Do you honestly think it'd have been preferable for his dad to make the statement "we'll take Jack, regardless!"?

I think this is attempting to make up for the mess we got ourselves in when we announced we'd committed to him all those years ago - we've now got to show ourselves as distant and non-commital to the kid.

I wasn't questioning anything Todd had said, just what Jack has just said, under the assumption Todd and the club would have informed him how to handle media questioning.

I think that what the club has been saying so far has been consistent with trying to get him to the second round, but these quotes by Jack himself baffle me a little, as they do nothing but tempt Gold Coast to pick him by saying he will be 100% committed to them etc. But as you pointed out in your earlier post, perhaps they have distanced themselves from Jack entirely to make it seem we are unsure of taking him.

We signed Viney on contract because Adelaide were trying to get him via the mini-draft last year. He was eligible and we convinced him to come to us, so he signed a contract.

GC and GWS don't really get much for nominating Viney - just elevate their 2nd round picks one spot higher in the draft. The risk that they take is that they end up with Viney instead of another player that they have their eyes on. For such a small reward, it's hardly worth them nominating Viney if there is any risk at all that they may get him - provided that they don't rate him at 1 or 2.

With Viney saying that he will make Melbourne regret not picking him, he is telling GC and GWS that there is a real risk that he will play for them.

If there is a risk, then the reward is not great enough for them nominate him ....... unless they rate him as the best or second best player in the draft (which, however, is a real possibility).

The risk of us not taking him are slim, but the reward for GC and GWS is very small.

The alternative is to play the game some are advocating. That is to get Viney to come out and tell GC and GWS that he doesn't want to go there and will walk out on them after 2 years. Something that transparent just tells them that the risk of us not selecting Viney is zero.

I'd love to play poker against some of the panic merchants on here.

Why? He'd know what the games are about, how real they are etc. I don't think he'd be 'frustrated'. There are several interpretations, some canvassed in this thread as to why he'd say that without being frustrated by how the MFC has treated him.

Some posters (not necessarily DrD -haven't followed his) seem to think the MFC is incompetent at everything just because we have been so on the field.

No I think the mfc list management and recruiting team are incompetent because their recent track record shows they are and until we can build a list that can win matches that is my position.

GWS and Gold Coast won't bid; GWS wouldn't risk missing Whitfield/Grundy and GC will need to hold on to pick 2 for a possible Tippett deal - stress less.

This.

It's all just smoke and mirrors.

We'll get in him the second round.

Everyone calm down. It's a bluff, so that GC don't nominate him. So obvious the club has told him to say this. I feel though GC know it's a bluff and will call it, so we'll just have to use pick 3. There is NO WAY this club would risk not picking him then watch him slaughter us each time we play. This club knows it would kill each and every supporter to see that. The FD are fans too, they are all romantics and fanatics like us (probably worse). This club may not survive Jack Viney playing elsewhere. The FD know this. Don't worry folks, he'll play for us next year.

what, are he and the old man sitting at opposite ends of the dinner table?

Todd Viney is not the MFC. Do you reckon Todd would recruit Jack even if the rest of the club were dead against it?

The problem the club has is that the clubs up north know that if they bid for Jack, we'll pull the trigger. We need to try our best to make it seem that we won't select him if they do bid - that's what this article is. Hopefully it's enough, I'm not convinced that it will be.

I would prefer Wines at #3

and Viney at #26

This whole issue is the difference between getting 1 gun inside mid.......or 2

Another quick question:

Why is it that if we don't have to use pick 3 on Viney, we get him with Pick 26?

I thought if someone bids Pick 6-12 on him, we would have to use our next pick, pick 13?

You're kidding aren't you? I am not worried by the article, but super impressed!

The guy is a professional footballer first, not a lackey for the MFC. He is also only 18. He is saying that he wants to come to the MFC NOW, but if he doesn't, he will play his heart out for whoever has the faith in him. If every player was actually secretly hatching a plan to come to the club they barracked for as a kid (or that their Dad played at) before they even kicked an AFL ball in anger, that would be far greater cause for concern.

I also object to the title saying he has threatened us. Not at all. He is saying he will offer his loyalty to whoever offers it to him.

Nah I'm not kidding, We have had this guy training with us for 2 years, got him games at Casey. Would fully expect that he has been coached in what to say and yet he comes out with this. Its disturbing.

I guess the chronology would be we nominate him as a F/S and if GC offers pick 2 for him we then have to decide whether to offer our first pick, pick 3. We could decline to do that and GC wins him.

Daniher is clearly rated above Jack so why wouldn't GC pick him instead of Jack?

Methinks there are a lot of mind games going on but still disturbed by Jacks quoted comments.

Pick 13 is our compensation pick - as far as I'm aware, compensation picks can't be used on F/S selections.

So, why do you assume that he wasn't coached to say what he did in the article?

Seems a little bit selective to me.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
