For a player who was in the midfield and played 22 games, coming 15th in the B & F is not a high ranking by the football department.

Even Scully and Trengove have overtaken Jones. And there are others too who will do likewise next year.

You are right. A premiership team is made up of many types. There are players who are your "stars" that are critical to your success. You build sides and plan your future on and around these players. Jones is not a star and is not a crticial keepsafe for the push to a flag. Jones' role can be filled by other players over the course of the journey to the top. BTW, I not sure there is any player that isnt doing his best for the team. If the FD find a deal for Jones elsewhere then so be it. If our talented youth develop, mature and improve the standard bar will rise and further challenge and overtake the futures of players like Jones going forward.

I have sympathy for the FD, they had to make a tough decision on Junior. I expect they're offering Cam Bruce a new contract - he played great footy towards the end of 2010 and he doesn't rely on pace to do it - so losing it is not a factor. He has been very durable and could easily go on for at least a couple more years. I'd be offering him 2 years at decent money since he's on the vets list (probably a pay cut since last contract was his prime) and I'd be expecting him to take it. If all goes extremely well he might even get another year and be part of a flag in 2013 a la Shane Crawford.

To free a spot on the primary list Green goes on the VL and Junior "retires". If we waited until the Cam Bruce scenario plays out before making a decision on Junior and Cam signs as expected then Junior "retires" with no farewell game or the fanfare that he deserves. If Cam Bruce does find a better offer elsewhere there is a possible way back for Junior if MFC ate a big slice of humble pie - he's still under contract on the list until after trade period.

On the Nathan Jones discussion I think everyone is missing the point. I'd be amazed if we were "shopping" Jones around for trade. He's a good player and we should be offering him a decent contract - standard 2 years at the money he's currently on. Often players get better offers elsewhere - he may want 3 years and significantly more money and he may be able to get that e.g. GC or Sydney looking to replace Brett Kirk. Then it's a standard negotiation just like it was with Brad Green and Aaron Davey over the past 2 years.

The question is how far do we go in the negotiation, is Jones as important as Green or Davey? I'd say no - if our team is going to be a flag contender then many young players will need to improve and go past Nathan Jones - I think that's what we've got to assume is going to happen - if Nathan Jones remains a core component we're not going to be challenging so in the big picture it doesn't really matter. If we give him a big long contract it compromises our position with players we expect to be better than him. So if we don't budge too far on the contract negotiations and Nathan Jones can do better elsewhere that's when and why trade talk arises - not because we WANT to get rid of him. In this circumstance a trade is in both parties best interest - otherwise he leaves for nothing with possibly no guarantee of ending up where he wants to - lose-lose.

Your points are valid but do you wish he leaves or the club offers himas a trade? I surely don't especially this draft.. I would be very surprised if we have any more than 4 picks outside rookie picks.The talent could still take a few years to fully mature.Your comments please.

Just an aside, I think the tough decision on Junior has been vindicated to an extent by the sad scenario surrounding the retirement of Brad Johnson. I don't think we would have wanted to see that happen to Junior next year.

If you're including Jones in this talent group, i must disagree with you. Jones was drafted in 2005 and has had 5 years to develop and mature. He's had plenty of time to show us what he's got, he no longer has 'potential' as he should have reached said level by now, if there were improvement left in him. Too little, too late if we're waiting for Jones to 'fully mature'.
