AFL considers final nine or final 10 for 2012

Hi all i was just wondering what everyone thought of the above.

Pesonally i would like a final 10 split up to 2 final fives like they did in the 70's 80's.

What would happen is 1,3,5,7,9 would be in group 1 and 2,4,6,8,10 would be in group 2.

Most people should know how the five worked and then the 2 winners of the preliminery grand finals would play in the super grand final thougts.

The heads at the AFL are starting to lose the plot. HAving a final 9/10 would be ridiculous. It's ridiculous enough to have half of the teams make the finals each year. The Bombers highlighted the flaws in such a system last year, when they qualified for the finals with only 10 wins. What a joke! 10 wins is definitely not deserving of a finals spot (they then got belted the next week, and rightly so). When there will be 18 teams in the comp, a finals series of 8 teams would give the AFL a lot more balance. Competition will be greater for finals spots, with those who make it being more deserving than say a Bombers team of 2009.

Strongly agree DD! Perhaps the AFL is seeking revenue through additional finals, so that they can pour more cash into GC and GWS.

They will bring in the final 9 or 10 cos they can get more games which = much more $$$$$$

The AFL is fast becoming a joke I'm struggling to stay in love with outside Melbourne.

I have always thought Vlad and Anderson would ruin the game and really think this will just demean the competition even more if they do this.

Does that mean Richmond would play finals or would they just finish 11th?

Final 10, what a joke. As others have stated the AFL just want to make more money by having more finals. When we had the 12 teams in the old VFL only 4 played in the finals. Now they want 10 out of 18, get real, teams could make the finals winning only 9 of 22 games and that's not on. Leave it as is 8 out of 18 would mean you would at least have to be a reasonable team and win more games than you loose to make the 8.

Hell, why don't we just have a final 18?

The first 10 teams get the first week off and the top 6 teams get a 2nd chance; the top 2 get a 3rd chance and in the 4th round the opportunity to recruit one mature-aged player from an already eliminated club.

The finals run for just over 2 months.

Brilliant.

Oh, and Vlad is the central field umpire for the Grand Final itself.

Either that or the umpire has a brain implant that Demetriou can control via a panel on his armchair in his corporate box.

If that somehow fails, he gives the thumbs up or down on all decisions gladiator-stylie.

Personally I think they should keep the top 8, Going to an expanded finals is simply about money.

Before the expansion the old final 5 out of 12 worked well (except for us missing the finals by a game or so lots of times)

Buy letting in half as we do at the moment I think it devalues the who finals cencept and the last few normally just make up the numbers with no real chance.

If the TV Stations are going to pay somewhere near $Billion+- they will want as many games to cover as is possible.

I do not like the sound of this expanded comp at all, somewhere it is going to Blow out.

Vlad & co better tread very carefully here. Let's not forget it is our game.

Ridiculous idea. Increasing the number of finalists will just lower the standard of finals football, giving us more matches like Adelaide-Essendon last year. The finals system is fine the way it is.

Besides which, having a top 8 for an 18 team competition means you have to do better than make the top 50% of the competition to play finals.

Mind you, it could make finals more attainable for us

Richmond has got wind of it. Word has this has been their number 1 agenda item for quite sometime.

Brendan Gale's dosier is to deliver to the Tigers faithful: -

a/ 3-0-75

b/ A final 10.

It's stupid. It's bad enough as it is now as a final 8.

the fact that you can finish 8th on the ladder and still have a chance to win a premiership is shocking.

I'm so sick of common sense decisions like this being influenced by money.

I'm sad to read that it seems most of you don't really like footy anymore. I for one am in favour of pretty much anything that will increase the number of games I get to watch every week. Within reason, of course.

the final 8 system as it is now is a thing of beauty IMO. It is perfectly fair in the way it awards the advantages (opponent, home advantage, double chance) to the clubs based on their qualifying position, and that is why, more often than not it is the top 4 who end up in the preliminary finals because they are the best 4 and deserve it. Would hate to see a more unfair and imbalanced system come in, and I don't think you could ever improve on the current one

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
