Valenti's future might hinge on what Luke Ball decides to do in the coming weeks...

Posted

Valenti has a good future.

He should be retained.

In fact I'd say he has more upside than Ball who St Kilda

doesn't care for.

Remember we've had some good players do it the hard way.

Players such as Bruce, Robbo, Davey and Jurrah.

everyone is saying that Bell is contracted, but I'm yet to see anyone actually able to confirm this...

He was drafted in 2002... Standard two year contract for 2003 and 2004. If he continued to get 2 year contracts each time he re-signed, his next one would've been 2005 - 2006, 2007 - 2008, 2009 - 2010, which means he would've been re-signed last year if this were the case, and I don't believe that happened... So we can rule this scenario out...

If he received one three year contract during his time, then he would be coming out of contract at the end of this year, and if he received two three-year deals, then he would be out of contract at the end of next season...

There's also the possibility that he received a contract extension from two years to three... Either way, unless Daniel Bell effectively received 2 three year deals, he is out of contract come October 31... I wouldn't have thought the club would've given him two three year deals...

Bell is contracted. End of story.

Why is everyone so keen to accept a fact that hasn't been substantiated everywhere?

I can confirm that he signed a new contract at the end of 2004... Along with Jared Rivers and the late Troy Broadbridge... Rivers got 3 years, however the article doesn't state how long Daniel Bell or Broadbridge got... Given Bell had only played 3 games to this point, I find it hard to believe he signed a 3 year contract, to take him through to 2007... Also we know that Nick Smith had shown just about as much as Bell at the same time, and he only received a 2 year deal, as he was delisted at the end of 2006...

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P1-99909328.html

As for our delistings, I think that Bell (if he's out of contract), Bartram, Cheney are all definitely in the gun, with PJ probably struggling as well... Buckley will be close, however I think he'll be retained... I'd like to see Valenti promoted, however I'm not sure if there's room for him...

Clearly Hughes will not be delisted.

Good player is Clearly.

1, 2, 11, 18 , 34, and PSD1 requires another 2 deletions with Spencer and Co. staying on the RL if they wish to stay.

As RR said - Buckley, Batram, Cheney, and McNamara are OOC.

Pick 2 or possibly 1 if you wish to keep over Pick 34.

For me, it would be Batram and Buckley, or just Batram.

I accept it as fact because it is fact. Sorry, it is.

jacey -- just on Spencer and the three year rule; my understanding is that (pending some changes this year) you can keep one player on your rookie list for a third year, but in order to do so the player must register for the ND, PSD and RD and be passed up in all three, and you have to take them as a draft pick to get them. This being the case, we'd be risking losing him.

I don't think that's exactly right... That's what takes place under the current system, except if the rookie you've cut isn't picked up in the National draft, you can pre-select them before the rookie draft... This is when you re-rookie a player...

I think all the three year rule entails is that the player must be given the option of entering the national draft... If they want to remain at their current club, and are happy to stay on the rookie list, then they can, but they must also be given this other option...

This in contrast to rookies going from their first to second year, I think if the club wants to have them for a second year, they're contracted to remain with that club, and can't enter the draft...

I could be wrong though..

What sort of substantiation you want? Copy of his contract? Clubs wont let the public be privy to such information, nor should they.

But my understanding from my sources is that Bell has one more year to go.

sad but true, would anyone be sad to see Bartram delisted?

I`d be sad for Barts, but I think he will be first to go. I don`t feel he can progress much further with his AFL career. I wish him all the best.

Bartram & McNamara to be delisted.

Then try to rookie list McNamara.

Spenser 3rd year rookie.

Is there anyway we can delist Bail and rookie him or do we have to keep him on list as he was only drafted last year

We would have to pay out his contract, on top of his rookie wages. It's a tactic Freo have used from time to time, but in my mind it's a horrible waste of money for a player you want to actually keep.

Am I right in saying that if we want to use draft picks 1, 2, 11, 18, 34 and PSD 1 then we will have to delist two out of the following four uncontracted players - Bartram, Buckley, Cheney and McNamara and also retain the lieks of Spencer and Valenti as 3rd year rookies and McKenzie as a second year rookie?

Since Miller and Jamar have re-signed, the four players left in the gun are the ones you have listed.

The departure of Robertson, Whelan, Wheatley and McLean will allow us to use picks 1, 2, 11 and 18. If we want to use any or all of picks 34, 50 and PSD1, then up to three of those four are in trouble. If we want to also elevate Spencer, then all four are likely to go. Unless we pay out someone else.

I thought they changed the rule already but they haven't. Apparently the AFL commission are meeting in the next couple weeks to discuss it to appease clubs with GC coming in.

AFL "However, the club will have plenty to consider before the AFL Commission meets on October 19 to discuss a number of changes designed to give clubs more flexibility with list management as the League expands.

West Coast has four second-year rookies pushing for elevation and the League is considering allowing clubs to retain a rookie list player for a third season, without the player having to first enter the draft."

PJ is contracted.

Damn it. Add him to the list of duds that we are forced to keep next year.

That list now reads: Newton, Bell, Dunn, PJ. Really, contracts aside, none of them should be on our list next year. It annoys me that one of McNamara or Cheney could find themselves de-listed (maybe just rookied) when these 4 keep spots on the list.

Buckley Bartram McNamara and Cheney will be wondering.

McNamara could be delited but re rookied.

Cheney and Bartram are most exposed here.

Buckley and Bartram, I reckon are the two most likely to go. McNamara and Cheney have upside, I can't see Buckley's (he might have pace, but he just cannot kick and doesn't get enough of the ball).

NAtional Draft

Pick Spot created by

NRD1 Bruce onto Veteran's List

NRD2 Maclean

NRD11 Wheatley

NRD18 Whelan

NRD34 ? (Delist/Pay Out Bell)

PSD1 ? (Delist/Pay Out Bartram)

Rookie ? (Delist/Pay Out Johnson)

Elevation 1

Rookie ? (Delist/Pay Out/Re Rookie Bail)

Elevation 2

Delist/Pay Out Johnson, Bartram and Bell.

Keep Cheney, McNamara and Buckley. Simple. Where room in the cap allows we must take the dollar hit if contracted players are first in line for delisting. Possible that if a delisted payed out player is delisted then picked up by another club that we only pay difference in contract if any.

Posted

MFC wont be paying out any contracts unless there a serious behavioural breaches (eg Carroll).

You dont just pay out contracts willy nilly. Further if you pay out the contract, you pay out the contract and you have no future say in the player's future moves. Its a drastic step that wont happen.

More thought needed

I'm sure the club would have tried to trade some of the contracted players of lesser value without any takers.

IMO if they're not contracted now, all four must be in jeopardy. Perhaps only one will survive.

If Luke ball nominates for the ND, and there are not any other QUALITY options available in the PSD (we do not have to use this pick unless there is someone worth taking), then we are only needing to shave one player. Chances of us using pick 50 are unlikely, so it could be that we only need to shave one player out of the players on the short list.

If Fetta Cheney is delisted I will be very unhappy! Was a standout in 2009, and deserves a contract.

McNamara has an upside, but what does he offer for 2010??

Bartram has the best engine going around and is handy in tagging roles, but this is his one skill and it can be taught to other players.

Buckley has pace to burn and a body to back it up, with better disposal he could be anything. Will his disposal ever improve?

As for rookie elevation it seems unfair to miss out on Spencer due to PJ and Messen taking roster spots. But contracts will not be bought out, and if he cannot be retained on the rookie list someone else can benefit from our error.

Cheney a standout? He was serviceable, and had some good games, but at other times was exposed, especially for pace.

Although I like his grunt, as a defender his size I'd want better speed and more reliable disposal. Unfortunately for him I think he's in the same basket as Bartram - "love his endeavour, but..."

McNamara hasn't had enough of a chance to show what he's got and to delist him would be a shame, but football is full of hard-luck stories.

Ditto Buckley, but he actually has shown some attributes which would make him worth persevering with.

I think if we can't retain Spencer on the rookie list, we'd be more likely to elevate him and delist one of the aforementioned players.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
