The start of the season every team believes they are a chance to surprise people with wins no matter how bad the team. After a good pre-season every one is ready to give it a real crack. Now if a team loses so many games to this point i think its a valid point to be awarded the pp now and then teams can still have a good crack of a go now!

If the PP is destined to stay this is a logical and good way to make it work.

Ideally after Rd 15 every club has played everyone else the priority picks can be sorted out pro rata, but in the current system that's not possible because of the way the draw is structured, but it does make sense.

Yeah I have to say that I had never thought of this idea, and it's a cracker. Get this stupid draw right AFL, 15 rounds for a complete round-robin and lock in the PP after round 15. Great idea! Stops the tanking talk, because I doubt teams would tank to get pick 2 instead of pick 3 etc. etc..

Totally agree with Dwayne, we are the most deserving of the picks, so give them to us now, and allow the club to get the most out of the season by trying to win games and improve.

You can't hand out priority picks and then watch that team win 3, 4 or 5 more matches for the rest of that season. The tanking talk would be in full swing then.

The only way to fix it is to scrap priority picks full stop. Or leave them for the start of the 2nd round.

I dare say that it wouldn't be 4 wins after round 15 if it was granted then. Three perhaps. There would still be the potential situation of tanking in rounds 10-14 but it does diminish the problem somewhat.

I'm starting to think the draft/priority pick does need changing after the feeling of last weekend.

I still think the priority pick has merit for what it's intended to achieve. it's just too easy to cheat the system.

I think that with a lottery system, the priority pick could be included in the lottery, so at worst the weakest team could get picks 8 & 9. This could be the way to make cheating less attractive.

I think if a team is going to get a priority pick it should come after everyone else (like what we got last year), i wouldn't be so willing for our team to lose if that was what we were getting. And i think the bottom team should always get pick one, regardless of where another team who's won less over aggregate finishes. There is way too much to gain from losing and the AFL must change it.

Personally, my view is that once this draft is done and dusted (conveniently), the AFL should simply eradicate the priority pick system. That's the simplest solution. I'm not a massive fan of the idea of bringing an NBA-style lottery into the AFL. The NFL is a more similar beast, and the top picks are simply distributed based on the teams' records. That wouldn't completely solve the clamour-fest for Scully this year, but it certainly would put an end to the ridiculous situations Melbourne and West Coast find themselves in this year. I don't like the idea of determining draft order after 15 rounds. We have a full 22-round season. Whatever shenanigans teams want to pull in the final 7 rounds, we send 8 teams into the finals based on their position after 22 rounds, and we can do the same with draft order.

When you have a draft in place, there is no system that would stop teams from tanking.

The lottery system in the NBA. Cast your mind back to the Lebron draft. Fans were screaming out for Clevand to tank and get as many balls in the draw as possible.

What if the priority pick was awarded into the following season ? i.e a time delay of a year. Then theres still some real benefit for bottoming outl but its a less attrative one and might disuade deliberate efforts to lose.

Just thinking aloud...what if for purposes of PPs it was taken on results from round 12 to round 11 following year.( bit like the tax year etc.). In order to get the very early PP youd still have to suck for 2 years (but effectively over 3 seasons ) but youre not penalised for suddenly finsing a bit of form when it matters not.

Mark Stevens in today's HUN: Mend fixture to end tank talk

He puts forward the already-raised idea that PPs should be awarded after 15 rounds to teams with less than 3 wins. The first 15 rounds should be played against the 15 other teams, rather than having instances of clubs playing twice in 9 weeks, and others not playing till round 21.

The reason why I like this idea as opposed to the NBA lottery-style draft is because, after Round 15, the biggest incentive for teams is to play out the remaining 7 games looking for a win each time. With the lottery, I'm sure we'd still see tanking occuring, since finishing 16th gives you a greater chance of getting pick 1 than finishing 13th.

Why not install the lottery and simply have each team out of the 8 getting 1 ball in the lottery, therefore there is no incentive to tank, after the first two picks are drawn randomly, it would then revert to order. So at worst the 16th team would get pick 3.

Thinking in past years perhaps a team such as richmond who finished 9th managed to snag the best player in the country and it may pop them into the 8. I think its great for the league when new great teams emerge as opposed to ......I hate to say it....Essendon, Hawthorn and Carlton and Collingwood being very good for looooong periods of time.
