Demons adamant they wont tank

FCS. I hope all departments are on the same page. From what i saw from Bailey on the couch tonight - they're sticking to the same plan. Yet there seems to be an understanding through media and even opposition supporters that melbourne must get the priority pick upon analysing the list. I hope they know what they're doing.

Of course this is what the club says. As if they would admit that, yes, we're looking to manage our season such that we only win one more match so that we get pick 1.

The age old "we wont tank", "our club doesn't tank" lines were also mentioned by the following sides:

* St Kilda in 2000

*Hawthorn in 2004

*Collingwood in 2005

*Carlton in 2007

*West Coast in 2008/2009

... and now Melbourne.

Of course, they wouldn't want to admit otherwise. However, it left me in no doubt, they were indeed looking for more wins - not that there is anything wrong with that apart from the fact of missing two very early quality picks! I'm hoping Bailey is a good poker player.

Well thank God the senior people within the club have the correct attitude even if half the posters on this web-site do not!

What about Jimmy Stynes? Can anyone think of a better outcome for him than a bunch of wins in thr 2nd half of the season?

I'm beginning to hate this attitude.

Big Jim isn't going anywhere and he would rather see the club succeed in the long run than have meaningless wins against rubbish opponents that jeopardise the club acquiring 2 of the best kids in the country.

I agree. Stop using the emotion of Jim Stynes.

It's equivalent to "can someone please think of the children"

I guess you believed Bill Clinton when he said that I smoked pot but I did not inhale.

If that was to happen, when Jim Stynes returns to full health he would be right to ask some pointed questions of key people as to why they blew a rare opportunity.

You are correct 45HG in your post.

What would people honestly expect the Club to say.

The Players are using the emotion of Jimma, i have no doubt. I believe this whole "tanking" scenario rests in there hands.

Over the last few weeks the Goal Posts have shifted.

We can hypothesize & argue on here for hours, but out on the Ground those boys now Really want to win.

So do you Put Jurrah & Frank Grimes etc back to Casey or do you let them play.

This is the question of the next 7 weeks????

I'm pretty certain that Jim Stynes sat at home on Sunday and said "will someone please think of Scully!".

He wants us to get those PP, as does the administration.

The desire is there make no mistake about it, whether we can pull it off is another issue.

If you want to judge performances on articles.

Roos must win for youngsters

Finals still on the agenda for Swans

All on the afl website.

yeah im sure he would have been doing that, and when he meditates and while he fights for his life. All you can hear from him is his cries for scully. Your love of scully is demented, At the moment you can get $3.50 for fremantle to win the spoon. Put some of your hard erned on the dockers and you cant lose. If freo get the spoon you can use your winnings to buy a tom scully figurine which you can take home and get your mum to knit a little melbourne jumper for. How good would that be!

one would hope.. as would we that phones calls from teh great Jimma may mentor some sense.

Who else has their stomach in knots and heart in mouth besides me ..lol

I'm sorry your head stuck in yrrr Rsss, Donny.

The best medicine would surely be supporters renewing their memberships early on the great news of 5 or so of the best draftees coming to the DEES headed by young Tom.

The influx of new members would be fantastic for Jim & the Club, maybe a new record membership. Headed by a newborn hope of our future to go to the top in a future September.

Garry Lyon apparantly said on Footy Classified Melbourne are much better off winning 4. (i didnt watch it)

I heard 'The OX' on Sen and he was adamant Melbourne must get the pp.

2 past players who played with Jimmy want it, i'm sure Jimmy does too. He sees the bigger picture.

Agree with you hotgod. Let's look at how Jim was so excited in getting Jack Watts to the club last draft.

If one can say think of Jim and his enjoyment, then one can equally say think of what the majority of Melbourne supporters want.

short term pain for long term gain.

Posted

The logic of all of a sudden wanting to win as much as possible now seems strange and hypocritical to me.

Last draft we picked Jack Watts and Sam Blease as our first two picks in the draft with an idea of looking for the future not the present. If we were to want to win straight away Daniel Rich would of been the pick as he was game ready right out of the draft!

So why all of a sudden are we trying to threaten whats BEST for the future of the club and want to win now when finals is out of the equation?

I hate the PP system but because its in i think it would be damaging not to take advantage of it.

Lets just hope things sort them selves out by them selves and we are all happy come the end of Rd 22.

I love a win as i love the club more than anything but i have to admit after the port win i smiled and when the song came on i felt so strange! It was like how i feel when watching a game of two other teams play, one team wins and you good on ya and move on.

Anyway thats my 2 cents

Posted

There are 3 games for the rest of the season where the expectations of Melbourne winning are realistic

Fremantle , Richmond and maybe North Melbourne

These teams have no realistic chance in september so i didnt include Carlton although with last weeks performace it was suprising that Port didnt act like a team desperate to cement a spot in the 8

Tanking is media driven and the end result from any club being in the position to gain the #1 draft pick is at a hiding to nothing

the fault of tanking is clearly in the hands of the AFL

The AFL have procrastinated on it far too long

There are options such as the high profile american sporting codes for guidance on what works as our current rules are flawed

In Melbournes current situation making a sensible list management decision which IS in our control i would be making sure we won no more that 4 games this season

Nobody can tell me players tank or are instructed not to win so i can only conclude that to lower the chance of winning only the football department can manage that by feilding a less competive team such as kids

From what i have seen Scully is a stand out and the position he plays is what this club needs the most

IMO i would be picking up the best 2 midfielders on offer with our first 2 picks

The game is changing and we better keep up with those changes if we are to become successful

Call me strange but I still think we'll get the PP. We played our hearts out last week and Port played one of the worst games Ive ever seen them play and we only won by 11 points. It will come down to the Richmond game I think, On paper they should give us a bath and they haven't been playing to bad of late. I dont think we'll beat North as we never seem to play well at the dome and North aren't playing to bad either.

Guys we're not a very good team, we've beaten West Coast at the G on the back of the Stynes emotion and Port who didn't even turn up.

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
