Way, way back in the day, it was only match reports to be found online. Whispering Jack was doing it way back then too, plus Hoju had his own going, with the Melbourne Chronicle along with Demonology. There may have been a few others too. There was nowhere for people to talk about the footy and it was more having some knowledgeable people shouting their thoughts into the universe. Jack was the only place I could find out how the Melbourne players went in the VFL at Sandringham.

Demonology was a really interesting place during its heyday.  It had a very simple layout that often made it hard to find stuff, but it was a great place to have a debate (especially in the early 2000s). Also, who could forget rono's obsession with turning Darren Jolly into a 'multidimensional tall', playing forward, back and ruck! It's definitely something that Terry Wallace would have done! ?

I was on Demonland back in the day too. I was Spunjy (I changed it in 2005 when the forum software was switched to prevent ambiguity, and embraced the 'Spongebob' that I was sometimes called). I never really understood the rivalry between the two sites. I was just happy to have multiple sites to be able to chat about the Dees, although my memory is that most Landers were members of both whilst those who identified as Ologists probably cross pollinated less.

I do think that the move across to proper forum software and the really great work put into the site by @Nasher as well as the far superior moderation (Ology always had problems with that) resulted in Demonland becoming a much more welcoming place for newbies. I think that the strength and stability of @Demonlandand @Whispering_Jack as well as Nasher's work was the key reason we have such a vibrant and long standing community which is certainly one of the better fansites in the AFL. Thanks to everyone who helped make that happen, as well as those who helped with many the other MFC sites that have kept me distracted since the late 90s.

Thanks Bob. Like many others I was on both sites and it wasn’t a case of real rivalry because we often got together for functions and of course, forum footy, where we dominated the other forums. My highlights were coaching a game in which we had both Nev Jetta’s father and brother with the dad being the most coachable player you would ever want (wherever he went, so did the footy). Also, the day we played Collingwood and I put Supermercado at FF and he kicked a goal against Collingwood’s 300 kg full back who was making a comeback after a few years “inside”. Dazzle was pretty good too. We also tried our very best to help out when Tim Stanes (Demonology founder) fell ill and couldn’t run the site any more. Our combined functions at the Mountain View Hotel in Richmond before games were also good value. Perhaps, when we finally get over Covid19 and win a flag (may both come soon), we could organize a reunion.

Wasn't there a moderator called 'Finks' back in the day as well? Early to mid 2000's?

Here's a screenshot from 2013 when the ship was sinking. Did Tim take it back? 'Where is everyone?' topic sums it up. Plus Range Rover fighting the good fight.

@Finkswas instrumental in the platform move - he was basically the project manager and I was the technical resource and made most of the decisions around it with my advice. He was the site rep who I saw as my “boss” in that process and we talked on the phone often during the migration. Not sure why but Andy (Demonland) didn’t have a lot of involvement in the day to day management in that era.

Finks faded in to the background and Andy started actively running the show again a few years later.

Do I remember properly RGRS that you actually met Dr. Poo while doing volunteer work manning the phones for the membership department of the club?  I seem to recall a photo posted on 'Ology with you both in it.

Might be getting a little confused here  with Radagast the Brown RGR.

Although Gandalf did utter these famous words that befits the occasion you are referring to so i might be wrong...

I was at the Mountain View last Saturday to watch the match. When I arrived the place was teeming with pre-match Carlscum and Essendrug supporters but all screens were on Dees vs Roos.

Ten minutes before the MCG kick-off, the place was deserted as the rabble had all charged down to the G, leaving a few tables of Demon supporters. The pub then switched all screens to the Blues vs Bombers, halfway through the final quarter in Hobart, and the manager, in an Essendon jumper, claimed it was a Foxtel issue and he couldn’t do anything about it. I think not!

I suggest the ‘Sporting Globe’ for your reunion!

Another ex ‘ologist here. This made me smile. Loved Demonology between 2005-2013. Wonderful memories that have been resurrected by reading this thread.

From memory, you had a great avatar of the Shaun Smith mark (in sepia?) back on 'ology.

I used to post on both a bit in mid-late 2000s

I fondly remember the ‘ology days too. Lots of in-jokes (426 nickname etc) that took my slow old self too long to get. Like here I was more of a lurker than a poster though.

Even though I’ve never lived in Victoria and don’t have all the local school/suburb references I’m pretty sure I worked out that KD went to school with some of my cousins.

Still have the ring tone you sent me!

I posted a few times on Ology yesterday at about 4.30 and I just checked and there has only been 4 other posts, in total, on the site since then.

I started on demonology years ago but got sick of the endless rants and arguments by posters who enjoyed the ranting and arguing more than actually discussing all things MFC. For a while I was on both but eventually just gave up and made the switch permanent.

  • GAMEDAY: Fremantle

It’s Game Day, and the Demons return to the MCG wounded, undermanned and desperate. Still searching for their first win of the season, Melbourne faces a daunting task against the Fremantle Dockers. With key pillars missing at both ends of the ground, the Dees must find a way to rise above the adversity and ignite their season before it slips way beyond reach. Will today be the spark that turns it all around, or are we staring down the barrel of a 0–6 start?

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
