It was clear from the moment we drafted him. Anybody with a double letter in their surname or nickname is at great risk of leaving early. What other evidence did we need? (It was probably not quite so obvious when we drafted Jordon. Did we know his nickname was JJ?)7 points

Modern day punters have it so easy. We used to watch VFA on channel 10 with a black and white pixel haze. I couldn't even tell whether Eddie Melai or Fred Cook had the pill. And that was on a sunny day. And we never complained once.5 points

Well done to the football club for putting this out, maybe there has been a reaction to member / supporter reaction. For me though this needs to be the minimum standard. We get some great training reports from the demonland community which are much appreciated but I would love to see something from the club “ The Richo Report” which gives a rundown on training from their point of view, especially the closed sessions without giving any obvious secrets away. Something along the lines of the link that trav14 posted yesterday to afl ratings report which was brilliant.Just take that member / supporter engagement to another level.5 points

I think we need to be careful with what’s in the media on this as as we saw with Kozzie, Oliver, Petty and numerous others Cornes, the old Rendell gang (RIP), Barrett etc have much more positive relations with Port and Adelaide than they do with our club. Especially after a number of those people went our club and particularly our coach, so hard in the off-season, to the point apologies were required. The Kozzie trade talk was all engineered by Port, attempting to give them an advantage, also the Oliver to Adelaide story and most of what we are hearing with regards to Petty is coming from Adelaide as well. Our club isn’t perfect but it would appear we don’t leak unintentionally (Oliver was clearly intentional and made Adelaide and their media look very silly!). The Petty situation is unique. Conventional wisdom would say if he’s thinking of going after the contract is over, conventionally we would trade him at the end of this year so we get something for him. However, he may be worth more to us for two years where he puts us in premiership contention and allows our young KPFs to develop than the extra picks we may get at this years end. And ultimately he’s contracted and it’s our call. All the other noise is Adelaide types trying to get him earlier, buyer beware.5 points

Whilst the fwd line is a bit of an issue, Has anyone looked at our efficient when JVR, Fritta and Petty were playing? I believe it was actually pretty good with just JVR and Petty, cattle makes a big difference. We have been crying out for a second tall since 2021 as T-Mac hasn't been able to keep his body together. I do agree though we need a new fwd line coach.5 points

It can't be assumed that we won't be addressing the issue of our forward line connection So, I'm assuming that we will be addressing the issue because we have to But as @rjay correctly pointed out, long kicks into the forward line has its benefits if we're able to retain possession on those long kicks. And whilst all that is happening the opposition aren't scoring But that system is no longer going to work against the good teams in my view so we need to change tack But again, sometimes we don't have a choice with long kicks in as the midfield is often under pressure. In those situations, kicking to a 1 on 1 instead of a pack (or the left forward pocket) would be preferable So if we have better schemes at the centre bounces and stoppages, we'll have a much better chance of delivering the ball with more efficiency to the forward line So it starts from the midfield (and also from half back on the rebound or from turnovers in our favour)4 points

One can only hope... Who's tasked with forward craft ? It has to be rem... the line coaches etc are only there to do Goodwins bidding. He ultimately must change how we play. The assistants only follow the game book.4 points

You have just perfectly described the mess aka our game plan. For those following at home who still persist in suggesting this really ISN'T our game plan....but just a less than stellar equittal of what is 'supposed' to be our methodology I'm affraid that's not the case. What is...IS We've essentially been playing slightly altered variations of this style for quite some years now. If it was supposed to be anything else it would have been amended by now. That is hasn't, that this dross and criminally wasteful durge continues must suggest it's by design...i.e it's condoned therefore...IS . We'll NEVER win another flag unless we stop this stupidity and play with more direction, more verve, more flair and more skill.. Need to play clever footy Hopefully we may get glimpses of something different leading into season 24.... if we don't.....meh....god help us4 points

this is what is bizarre reporting of weight is not about fat shaming in elite sport... mostly it is interesting for the young new rookies... is new player x 90+kg's, ooh they may be able to play 1st year. is player x 70kg, Ok, they are a few years away, they need to PUT ON A FEW KG'S... strength/muscle bulk mass vs agility/speed debate.... nothing to do with fat, because elite players are not fat.4 points

Didn’t we move to Casey to build our supporter base as it was in the major growth corridor of Melbourne? So it’s great that we are training at Casey at times unknown and when you do, you keep the sessions closed during school holidays and all other times for that matter lest a fan stumble into the inner sanctum. Of course I understand the need for utmost secrecy regarding our game plan, the new one we develop around this time every year that starts out with a few nuances but by the second half of the season looks exactly the same as it has for the past 5 seasons. Using a boxing analogy the Goodwin game plan reminds me of a heavy weight slugger who only knows one way to fight, keep moving forward throwing as many punches as possible hoping by sheer strength to overpower your opponent. It works most of the time until you run into opponents who know how to really box. That said for one glorious period of 10 weeks in 2021 we boxed like Ali and destroyed all before us. Where did that magic come from and where did it go?4 points

With the recruitment of McAdam we have some serious weapons down there now. That forwardline will benefit greatly from speed of ball movement where I will back them in one on one but they need to be given the opportunity. Other areas also need to be fine tuned like leading patterns, blocking to give the bigs separation for a lead. Smalls being front and square etc. We can go to our default method of slow and wide as a source of game management but quick ball to a forward line with system to allow the forwards the best opportunity to do their thing before our opposition get numbers back and also our allow our mids and backs the ability to set up behind the ball for repeat entry or at worst a stoppage. It’s just a slight tweak to put more value on the offensive side of our game. With our recent recruitment it suggests that we will be doing exactly that and play more attacking football but ultimately the proof will be in the pudding. I am looking forward to seeing a more attacking Melbourne in 2024.3 points

Good news. I managed to find all of the original full resolution shots rather than relying on the down scaled copies that I had up in the cloud. I also found some footage of an intra club out at Casey which I have added in. This can now adequately be viewed on a desktop. For those of you who can manage the pain of reliving this time, it's worth having another look. If you dare, enjoy ==> https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-MhQnCP/i-bWkHdxp/A Mods feel free to replace the ling in the original post.3 points

The biggest difference from 2021 has been the crowded forward lines we now have to cope with. And that started from early in 2022 Couple that with our slower ball movement along with less corridor football and the crowded forward line gets even worse And then last year we started getting injuries to our first choice forwards so we ended up with a makeshift forward line trying to function in a crowded situation with the ball coming in, in a bombing style We're asking our forwards to stand underneath those bombs so what chance have they got? Despite all that we won 16 games in the season proper in both 2022 & 2023 (stellar defence, excellent midfield, accountable footy, a zone defence that operates well and a terrific contested style) So we need to get smarter up forward and with our delivery to the forward line. Certainly with the speed of those inside 50 forays We need to change because we have to change. That's where having some fresh ideas from McQualter can be invaluable As previously stated elsewhere, I'm confident that we'll see a different game style that can really hurt the opposition2 points

Right on. AFL players are in the sport/entertainment business with a limited career timeline to make some serious money and set themselves up for life after footy. Petty is no different to anyone else in this regard. I too believe he will go to the Crows at the end of the year unless the MFC decide to offer hime a similar mega contract. I think we should have traded him at the end of 2023 when there was the possibility of a good deal to be made. Love him as a player and really hope he stays but it is not looking good.2 points

Yes but with much the same list we lost 18 games in 2014. And Roos cleared out over 30 players over 3 off-seasons I can't argue with you about the coach but we had some deep problems throughout the club which led to the CEO going and a board reshuffle Some were saying that the AFL bailed us out but the AFL intervention was required Looking back, we were a real mess especially when you look at the club now2 points

If his foot injury was an issue why wouldn't he be off it? Instead of that he's running and jumping around and it's mid January More so MFCSS and people who delight in thinking the worst Hanrahan's2 points
