  3. GCS planned for one pick at the draft but AFL rules require each club to make 3 draft picks or upgrade rookies. To achieve that GCS delisted Greenwood intending to redraft him late in the draft. They snookered themselves. Serves them right. How they thought no club would draft him before their late pick is beyond me. Carlton have been playing similar silly games in delisting players only to re-draft them. It is not what the draft is for. Hopefully the Greenwood heist stops those silly games.

  6. All a bit strange this. A few weeks ago the Suns were struggling with their salary cap to the point where they tried desperately to ditch a player who ended up not wanting to leave. Now, they've managed to ditch a player to North Melbourne which is taking up the Suns' contractual obligations. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but ...

  7. Foolish by Liam. Those who applaud him for having the guts to stand by his principles should also realise that the reason why we have these mandates is that people don't always know what is good for them and important decisions like these are best taken out of their hands. It is the reason why there are laws that require you to be 18+ to drink, gamble, vote and drive. There are no alternatives to the vaccine. We could have either endured upto somewhere between 500K-1M deaths (In Aus alone) or locked down until a vaccine has been developed. Im glad Dan did what he did and despite the massive mental toll i and others have taken, understand the decision. The other unspoken, slighty tangential topic here, is that mRNA technology (used in the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines) is a modern medical breakthrough. People do not realise what this technology is going to do for incurable diseases (think cancer, autoimmune conditions and chronic illnesses) in the next 10-20 years. The fact that COVID-19 bought this to the forefront is one of the very few positive benefits of COVID (WFH is the only other one i can think of).

  9. I swear people refusing to get vaccinated just makes no sense to me. Throwing away your life because you think your Google skills are superior to the skills of scientists and doctors world wide. Mind boggling stupidity.

  13. You don't just "throw in a theory". A theory, among other things, needs to be built on previous scientific facts and research, even if it attempts to change some of them. No scientist gets far if they haven't done significant research to develop a theory or what seems like a "breakthrough" in the first place. "Throwing in" a crazy Covid theory like Ivermectin or hydroxychloroquine is not science, it's just ignorant or hopeful guessing. These theories got the short shrift from the TGA that they deserved. BTW, here's another hint: follow the money. Who made a large investment in hydroxychloroquine in Australia and can't sell it? There has now been 7.5 billion vaccinations given for Covid-19, and 3.2 billion (nearly half or 42%) of the world's population is fully vaccinated with two doses. People are not exactly dying in even small numbers as a result. Vaccines for Covid-19 have gone way past the "experimental" or "trial" phase. They are now about the most researched and medically-tested vaccines ever. Anyone like Liam Jones who thinks they are still dangerous is deluding themselves ... quite the opposite given the lives they save.

  14. You mean, like when a world expert in scientific misconduct was threatened with legal action for pointing out flawed hydroxychloroquine studies? Righto... https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/may/22/world-expert-in-scientific-misconduct-faces-legal-action-for-challenging-integrity-of-hydroxychloroquine-study https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/aug/03/microbiologist-elisabeth-bik-queried-covid-research-thats-when-the-abuse-and-trolling-began Or when scientists are threatened with physical and sexual violence and murder? https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-02741-x Heaven forbid you would listen to the vast majority of actual experts on these matters rather than disproven crackpots and YouTube.

  18. Yep, same. I went through the roof. Watching it in the replay, this goal is still the moment where the hair on the back of my neck stands up. Love the look on his face as he salutes the crowd too. None of the usual excited child bouncing around you see from him sometimes. A stern look of concentration. We’re crushing them, but the job’s not done yet. We may never again in our lives see a midfield combination like Petracca, Oliver and Viney. I’m definitely going to enjoy it while it lasts.

  20. How can fear of complications on such a low percentage overrule a statistically proven method of inoculation against a deadly virus? That literally makes it less likely for one to die, or helps prevent more vulnerable loved ones from dying. Beggars belief

  23. That truly warms the heart! Wonderful to see all those faces of joy and big smiles from former Demons players. Love the fact that the players and past officials have their families there with Neale Daniher. Fingers crossed the 2021 Premiership Cup gets to visit Nathan Jones and his family next. 🤞

  28. This post assumes Liam Jones doesn't like injections of any type and therefore won't be vaccinated. That is almost certainly not the reason for his refusal. I don't know his reasons for not wanting to be vaccinated, but I think he's making a big mistake. Not because his football career has come to a premature end, but because the vaccine is the best protection for his health and for those around him. Current data suggests that nationwide about 95% of the population (16+) will end up vaccinated. Hopefully more. But 5% of approx 720 AFL male footballers is 36. Given those number we shouldn't be surprised that there's at least one footballer not wishing to be vaccinated. I just hope he's the only one (and that he subsequently gets vaccinated, even if it is too late to resurrect his career).

  32. Scene: a large conference room, deep underground beneath an international bank in Zurich. Neil Balme sits at the head of a long table, stroking a white cat in his lap. Around the table are Tom Scully, Brock McLean, Mark Jackson, Gerard Healey, Brian Taylor, several umpires, and various ex-players and officials. Balme: Gentlemen, you understand why we are here. The results of this year's AFL Grand final were ... unsatisfactory. No-one speaks. They fidget nervously. Balme: I call now for your individual reports. Number two? Scully: gee, number one. We tried. We made sure Goodwin stayed in charge. We brought in Williams who everyone knows is borderline insane. We brought in the stand rule. We even brought back the virus. Balme: enough, number two. All these factors I predicted in advance and they were already compensated for. Number six? Jackson: I'm an individual, ya can't fool ... aw, [censored], I forget how it goes now. (He punches Gerard Healey in the face.) Balme: (into his suit lapel) bring the medication. (aloud) Number eight? Mclean: I, er, did as instructed, number one. Balme: you were instructed, number eight, to spend the night before performing "wheelies" and "burnouts" in your utility vehicle outside the Melbourne team sleeping quarters. Mclean: *gulps* that's right, number one. Balme: in fact you spent that night performing said deeds outside the Wyndham Vale public hotel. Mclean: well I couldn't find out where they was staying. I arksed everyone. I even-- Balme: enough, number eight. Number thirteen? Taylor: wowee, number one. I tried to break their morale. Every game. Balme: "trying" is not considered adequate, number thirteen. You are in a position to influence public perception and hence, team perception. Only success is acceptable. Perhaps you should try learning the players' numbers? Taylor: crikey! Looks like it’s all over for me, folks. The fat lady is getting ready … wowee!! Balme: number twenty? How do you account for a performance so out of character? Umpire Stevic: *gulps* we tried, number one. We let our boys throw it plenty of times -- the Western Bulldogs, that is -- we didn't pay high tackles, but ... gee, number one, we can only help the Doggies if they get near the ball. After halfway through the third quarter ... Balme: I have reviewed the video replays of the match and fortunately for you, I concur with your assessment. You are not held responsible. The umpires sigh and visibly relax. Balme presses a button under the table. Brock McLean screams as a massive electric shock incinerates him and his chair. The chair descends below floor level and a new chair arises in its place. Balme: I do not tolerate failure. Let this serve to ... motivate you. I expect ... improvement ... next season. This meeting is closed.

  34. Has The Cup visited the Jones family yet? I would have thought he would be one of the first to get a visit. Maybe it has but the pic has not been put up, which would be odd as he was part of it until the last week. Jones holding The Cup is something everyone would love to see albeit not on the ground after playing in the game but still a joy to behold.

  37. Interesting comment given you’ve been registered for less than a month and it’s been years since RR was a moderator. He had a pretty prickly personality no doubt, but he also dealt with a LOT of shit. For every time he might have acted harshly, there were 10 funkwits who repeatedly broke the rules and then cried foul when they got given the boot; the ragequitter in question was most definitely one of these. Unless you were staff at the time, you don’t know. My skin turned to teflon years ago when it comes to criticism of our moderation. People see 1/100th of the picture and think they know. They don’t. By the way, RR is still about, he just doesn’t post. I respect his contribution to the site, and I think it’s a pity others don’t.

  39. We have used so many superlatives in the season reviews for players #1 to #12, I wondered if there would be any left for #13 (😄). To me, a post match interview late in the H&A season (can’t remember exactly which match) says it all ……. after another ‘off the charts’ performance, he responded to the interviewer’s question by stating: “I just hate losing”. He gets battered from pillar to post every game (often unfairly), but he just bounces back up like the true champion he is, and goes about dominating games of football. Say no more!
