  1. He was a sensation before his 3 knee reconstructions. One of the saddest curses to hit MFC. His eventual return and win in the 1999 B&F plus 2000 grand final was a testament to his determination and talent.

  2. Great player and one of the best dees players to pull on the jumper. Love the Ox.

  3. tragically became only a shadow of his former self after the recos. Prior to this was probably the most promising forward I had seen at Melbourne .Would have been every bit as good as Carey.

  4. Alongside Robbie - for sheer talent (when not hobbled by injury upon injury) - I hold David Schwartz in absolute awe. He is up there with the greatest 5 players the MFC ever had since WWII.

  5. We almost got Travis Colyer and David Myers over the line for pick 2. Adrian Dordoro wanted more.

  6. Hi there Demon supporters. On the hunt for some old Melbourne books. Looking for the old Footy kids books from the 1980s by Lorraine Wilson. If anyone has them would be happy to buy them. Also on the hunt for any dvds/vhs recordings of Demon wins between 1998-2006. Regards Louis

  7. Extraordinary bad luck with injuries is the only reason we didn’t snaffle a flag in the 90’s. I mean the talent on our list was amazing. The Ox, Gazza, Jimmy, both Lovetts, Tingay, Charles, Neitz, the Febeys, Healy, Pike and in 94 Jakovich was still on our list for heavens sake. As I remember it in 93 Balme as coach tried to develop a new game plan and we dropped the first 4 games of the year and played well thereafter but missed the finals. In 94 we played well but dropped games to just sneak into the finals and lost to the eventual winners. Then from 95 it was just a procession of injuries, Ox, Charles, Jackovich, Tingay, Glenn Lovett and Pike sent packing. Oh what could have been with a little bit of injury luck.

  11. Thanks for putting this up will watch and remember. for me it is Tulip and The Ox. Best two players I can remember I only remember Barassi playing for the opposing side, Been others that made me go as well, the wizard , Jakovitch and jurrah to name a few, there might even be a couple playing now that might make me watch with pleasure again. Win or lose.

  12. It should be Pert's number 1 goal to negotiate with the AFL to have next year's Queens Birthday and Anzac eve games as our home games next year or else seek compensation. So much of our revenue would be predicated on those two events. To miss out in 2020 because of COVID-19, and have Richmond and Collingwood enjoy the home gate spoils in 2019 and 2021 just can't happen in my book. As for Collingwood in round 2, it may be a great time to play them as they would have lost a lot of momentum from their excellent round 1 performance. On the other hand, we could be 0-2 and holding up the ladder if the Pies are serious and we continue on with GOODW-IN-EFFICIENT football as per 2019 and round 1 2020.

  13. Round 10 Carlton was sitting on four wins, but Judd gave them the nod so Carlton made sure they didn't win another game. The Kreuzer Cup was more about Judd than Kreuzer.

  14. Three Melbourne reps in team of the year. Assuming that is Alan Johnson and Brett Lovett. Wow!

  15. It is a shame that the mnd big freeze won't go ahead in front of a massive crowd. It has actually turned queens birthday into an enjoyable day. Collingwood would probably want it because they know next year it's there home game where I presume crowds will be back. But on the important side of things it's great to see Neale still around, his 6th mnd event he will be part of. Everyone can still support him and his foundation by purchasing a beanie.

  16. Garry achieved more and a better player at the peak of his powers. Max may finish his career as an MFC great, Lyon already is one. Be interesting to see if Garry comes up against Stynes or Neitz in the final round. Both have a strong claim to the title!

  17. Max is a great player and may end up being one of our best 5 ever. I think Lyon is alreday in that category. Also, Lyon is 5 time All Australian, not 3. Teams of teh year are recognised as ALl Australian. Garry was named CHB in team of the year in 1989 & 1990. Brings his total to 5 representative sides. 1989 B: A. Johnson, C. Langford, G. Pert. HB: B. Lovett, G. Lyon, G. McKenna. ? D. Pritchard, P. Couch, G. Brown. HF: N. Winmar, S. Kernahan, Gary Ablett. F: B. Stoneham, J. Dunstall, A. Bews. Foll: S. Madden, M. Bairstow. Rover: J. Platten. Inter: T. Daniher, T. Watson, M. Bayes, G. Williams. 1990 B: A. Collins, S. Silvagni, J. Worsfold. HB: B. Lovett, G. Lyon, G. O’Donnell. ? D. Millane, A. Shaw (capt.). G. Wright. HF: P. Daicos, S. Loewe, Gary Ablett. F: S. Kernahan, J. Longmire, S. Russell. Foll: S. Madden, C. Lewis. Rover: A. McGuinness. Inter: M. McGuane, M. Thompson, A. Liberatore, M. Tuck. Coach: L. Matthews.

  18. Toughest one yet by far. Gawn is in his prime and could finish his career with 4 or 5 All Australians if he can hold his form. Lyon was another player marred by injuries and could have stacked on a ton of goals if. he was able to consistently play at full forward for the last few years of his career. Will go Lyon, only just, and fully expect that if this poll is run again in 4 years, it'd ge Gawn.

  19. Lyon gets my vote as at today. The vote may change circa 2025. Maxy may end up one of our greats if he can sustain his performance over the next 4-5 years and get a few more B&F and All-Australia selections... and a premiership.

  20. Of course he is, and with no crowd. Then it would be their turn next year. Greedy [censored]

  22. No.41 Round 22 v Carlton at MCG The home and away season in ‘88 had two memorable victories. We defeated the Hawks to avenge the 87 prelim and we were full of excitement for the elusive premiership glory. The team recorded a 5 straight winning sequence to start the year and were 12-4 by round 16 and holding the double chance behind the Hawks on top. Then we lost to the Hawks (smashed) and then the next 4 games. The 5 straight losses left us 12-9 with the Blues in 2nd place in round 22. The Bombers were keen to take our spot in the finals. At least our destiny was in our own hands, “ if we win, we are in ! “ The big game at the MCG suddenly saw the Dees awake with a big first quarter. We were on fire. I remember a very anxious crowd suddenly remembering that we were a good team. Northey had a way of lifting his players above themselves. Whilst we didn’t have a key full forward which was the real gap in the team, Lyon, Spalding, Wight & Williams stood up through the year to kick vital goals supported by Wilson and Jackson as small forwards. An 8 goal first quarter burst had us up by 5 goals. Lyon was the key. The lead extended to 7 goals by 3/4 time and could and should have been more. Stynes and O’Dwyer were in charge in the ruck. The Blues were being held but then kicked 5 goals to start the final quarter to get within 2 goals. Three goals to the Dees answered the challenge in the last 10 minutes gave us a 30-point victory. I remember the excitement of young Andy Lovell when he kicked the final goal. We had defeated the Blues (reigning premiers) twice in the year and deserved our spot. It was excitement and relief as we qualified for the finals to back up 87. We did it tough and Demon supporters needed heart medication once again. Ultimately the 88 finals were memorable (both good and bad!) Melbourne 14.12.96 defeated Carlton 10.6.66

  24. and what a zenith it was. Losing schwartz remains one of my big demon griefs. Losing Jakovich and Charles all around the same time was rubbing raw salt into the wound. Has to be the unluckiest period of time with injuries to stars we've ever had

  25. Ok, so you want us to talk about the AVO victim/s? To discuss what's happened to them? On an anonymous football forum? Just to balence the thread up? I think you are confusing most poster's respect for the victim's privacy as to mean we do not care. For us to not know the name of the victim, the circumstances surrounding the AVO or it's breach is a good thing, and more than likely what they want. Not one person on here has said they do not have sympathy for the AVO victim. Of course we do.

  26. Interesting rule. Possible strategy. You could draft an older brother as a late draft pick to get a younger talented sibling.

  27. Absolutely. Peter Matera was ready to sign and come across. Dees would have grabbed him with PSD#1. WA media went nuts and camped out the front of his house. The Eagles players and coaches put pressure on him to stay and I recall the club offered him leadership credentials. Matera played for 5 more years across 1998 to 2002. He would have been a star in the MCG and might have helped us in the 1998, 2000 & 2002 finals runs. Certainly would have been the Biggest get since Templeton and Moore moves across.

  28. Yes Matera was very close (Bags Packed) to being on our list. So sad. Just the Player we needed to put serious Respect back into the Club 23 years later we still need an A Grade recruit

  29. Very sad for Laidley and his family. A good footballer and coach. Many ex footballers fall short on the moral rectitude stakes. Pretty much a reflection on the vicissitudes of humankind. He should receive some sympathy and compassion. Again highlights the importance of good mental health and the struggle that we all experience in maintaining the appropriate balance in our life. We all need to be able to repress some of our thoughts and behaviours. It is just another example of the dangers of social media and the communication of material of a personal nature.

  30. No winners here. A sad affair and a terrible outcome for Dean. Ricky Nixon proves himself to be an obnoxious, glory hunting, narcissistic [censored]. The police officer involved who thought breaching privacy was a good idea. The gutter press that posted pics gained through this obvious breach of privacy. Appropriate process should be followed. Public interest stopped at ‘he was arrested and not bailed’. Everything after that is salacious trash that serves no one.

  32. Based on just these leaked photos, or do you have some other evidence to back up this ridiculous claim? Vic Police generally do a fantastic job despite working for a Government that doesnt seem to have any great affection for them, and a judiciary stacked with Libertarians.

  38. We've had questionable development over the years, but zero doubt this was ridiculously poor recruiting. A ready to go gun (and Viney best mate) vs a project player, and over the years I never really saw anything that made me think he'd anything worth a top 5 pick.
