  1. With KK and Bennell on the list... No, we can't afford to carry another.

  5. There's been a benefit to having no spectators on course. Despite the technical difficulties of having to phone a friend Bruce & Skyping Corey Brown & Katie Mallyon, the coverage of the Sydney autumn carnival is much improved. It's all about the horses & racing. No poxy fashions on the field flogging clobber that no-one would ever wear. No airhead "celebrities" spending their 15 of fame being interviewed by wannabe weathergirls. All about horses & the sport. Bloody marvellous

  6. My football philosophy for the last 30 odd years is to think the opposite of whatever Mick Malthouse says. Sure, he's coached a few teams to Premierships in that time, but I've been immensely happier ignoring his curmudgeonly commentary.

  11. not unusual at all jim, you're just scaremongering. it's easy to postulate disaster scenarios (and there will be many because of cv19 many (most) businesses run on a line of credit. if their revenue drops dramatically (cash flow) they are in deep doodoo. having said that the afl have been throwing money around like a drunken sailor for a long time whilst simultaneously screwing grass roots footy. i have little sympathy for their excesses as an organization. unfortunately it hits the clubs and supporters heavily

  13. And to keep this thread ticking over Wadda I'll promote up some e-Sports iRacing Motor Racing if and when it appears. Maybe the F1's as well if it's happening (or if found) For instance ... over the next 10 Wednesday's (7pm) Foxtel and 10Play (free) are showing the iRacing (V8 Supercars) with the real drivers at the controls and playing for real points. It's better than one would imagine ... the graphics are superb. 10Play is available through the network 10 website. Once there, just look for the large rectangular V8 Supercars 'Icon.' Then click away. Works best on a PC. And Happy Valley is on Wed (late) as well so the Joao & Zac show rolls on! I will just do a few win bets and a couple of small multi's with those 2 as the conduits.

  14. Ahhhh....i was wondering what was going on? All the fields seem to be very large at all venues. I hadnt realized the prize money had been reduced as well. I just had a winner into a couple of places, but thats all you need sometimes. It did seem they had an average day. It was very hard early and yes many horses had not much form to speak of. 4067803 meant favourite in a few races. But it was a bit of fun nevertheless. Ill be watching in the future for some good cards. Thanks for the input.

  15. Almost impossible against Gawn; this is despite his value to the Team across several years - some games and efforts were terrific and thus worthy of praise and recognition.

  16. Yeah the lack of a crowd has made zero difference from my point of view GtB. The crowd is generally not part of the viewing experience and our ears are trained to the race caller anyway. Let's face it, it's all about the racing, horses & jockeys and they could pipe in the crowd noise for all I care. I don't notice it anyway.

  18. No such luck my way Wadda but you win some, you lose some. It wasn't a strong card though but I knew that going in. Hard to evaluate form when there isn't much to speak of. Zac had an average day by his own standards. But both he and Joao have ridden 198 winners between them this season ... that's form worth following in anyone's book. Still, there's always next weekend and I'll be interested to see whether 'Nature Strip' runs in the G1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on Saturday ... Waller has spruiked the horse over the longer distance but we'll see. But because the racing may stop at any time the owners are running their horses to maximum fields. Prizemoney being slashed means that every dollar is being chased.

  19. I actually did ok on Zac, Jose and Blake and booted home a 3 leg multi that allowed me to break even over the weekend. So maybe im a convert now Macca ! Prawn Yeah Yeah and Private Rocket however are still names im getting used to....not to mention Demons Rock. We better follow the latter!

  20. Agree Clint. If we had gone West and won easily, many Dees supporters would be frothing at the mouth for an early return. The fact we saw essentially the same rubbish as last season has dampened enthusiasm for many IMO.

  21. I'm still undecided but while there are over half a million cases in the USA with over one thousand deaths every day it's way too early to think about something as peripheral as a contrived football season. Let's have a look in a month and then think about it. To have games when it is illegal for two children to kick a ball in the park is not the right message. Like many I cannot help but think that the willingness of sports to restart is motivated by money rater than any altrustic desire to provide entertainment in these difficult times.

  28. China has been hammered and looks like it's set for a 2nd wave unfortunately. Russia has also been hammered. North Korea have been seeking assistance through back channels apparently and would never admit to anything so who would know really. I wouldn't use these examples to back your argument...

  29. It should be noted that all the clubs are membership based and not privately owned. They are also not-for-profit organisations. So having oodles of cash reserves is just not possible with the way the clubs are run. The biggest issue is the guaranteed money paid to the players (albeit reduced down to 70% or thereabouts - overall) If that wasn't a thing then the clubs could possibly remain dormant for quite a while. Same for the NRL. In essense, the clubs go into financial meltdown because the players are still getting paid (collectively, huge amounts) And ongoing player contracts can or could be honoured ... thus creating more financial pressure. Coaching contracts less so as that money isn't 'necessarily' guaranteed (apart from the head coach's?) As it stands, the AFL has just borrowed about half a billion with 1 very big ongoing operating expense - player salary's. There's your real reason in a nutshell DJ. By the way, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (Wimbledon) were insured against a pandemic-like event.

  30. Who.? There is plenty of news companies quoting even more strongly, how the Chinese fishing vessels flanked by Chinese Coast Guard ships, have invaded economic zones of Neighbors in the last couple of weeks, even sinking a Vietnamese fishing vessel, Via ramming. The first story I found, I couldn't post as it was pay per view. NYTimes. But I'm in this time around.> https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/31/world/asia/Indonesia-south-china-sea-fishing.html NATUNA ISLANDS, Indonesia — Dedi knows where the fish run strongest in Indonesian waters off the Natuna islands. The Chinese know, too. Backed by armed Chinese Coast Guard ships, Chinese fishing fleets have been raiding the rich waters of the South China Sea that are internationally recognized as exclusively Indonesia’s to fish. While Mr. Dedi catches the traditional way, with nets and lines, the steel Chinese trawlers scrape the bottom of the sea, destroying other marine life. So not only does the Chinese trawling breach maritime borders, it also leaves a lifeless seascape in its wake. “They come into our waters and kill everything,” said Mr. Dedi, who like many Indonesians goes by a single name. “I don’t understand why our government doesn’t protect us.” Wary of offending Indonesia’s largest trading partner, Indonesian officials have played down incursions by Chinese fishing boats, trying to avoid conflict with Beijing over China’s sprawling claims in these waters. But with the Chinese presence growing more aggressive, fishers in the Natunas are feeling vulnerable. “There was a vacant period, then China came back,” said Ngesti Yuni Suprapti, the deputy regent of the Natuna archipelago. “Our fishermen feel scared.” The latest episode occurred in February, fishers said, when Chinese fishing boats flanked by Chinese Coast Guard vessels dropped their trawl nets yet again. It seemed as if the coronavirus outbreak peaking in China at the time hadn’t diminished the country’s global ambitions. The Indonesian fisheries ministry, however, denied any intrusion by the Chinese. The Indonesian government does not provide data on incursions by foreign fishing boats. China’s illegal fishing near the Natunas carries global consequence, reminding regional governments of Beijing’s expanding claims to a waterway through which one-third of the world’s maritime trade flows. But local leaders in the Natunas don’t control what happens near their shores. “We only have authority over our land,” said Andes Putra, the head of the Natunas’ Parliament. “The provincial and central governments handle the seas.” Yet with multiple agencies responsible for protecting the seas — the navy, the coast guard, the marine police and the fisheries ministry, to name a few — decision-making is diffuse, analysts said. “There is a lack of a single coherent lead agency or a single coherent policy for maritime security,” said Evan Laksmana, a senior researcher at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital. “The Chinese can take advantage of that.” image from > https://www.paragkhanna.com/home/security-outlook-at-the-wef-east-asia-summit-in-manila Security Outlook at the WEF East Asia Summit in Manila World Economic Forum | May 23, 2014 East Asia Summit, Manila, Philippines

  35. i'd have to say its a pass from me. I think he can be a good player, but like others have said we have too many injury plagued players on the list as it is. and besides I reckon we could have T.Lockett playing down forward and we'd struggle get 40 goals out of him a year with our dodgy forward structures and poor kicking going inside F50.

  38. Rance on Dirty Dave in the 3rd was worse. Head down, front on - by today’s standards would get a long long break. Earl on McKenna was ugly, but there was an element of side on with Earl being “helped” into the contest by his opponent. Nonetheless both Dave and McKenna very lucky lads! Long’s was just a pre-meditated dog of an act. Saw him, lined him up and went through him - classic Sheedy thuggery. I was behind the goals that day and got a pretty uninterrupted view.

  39. Now that's the reason we lost. We played to early. Had of been the last Saturday we would have won. Then again I reckon no one was to beat the Bombers that year.

  40. 1998 we really struggled through the middle of the season. Had heaps of injuries and then when the senior men came back in we strung a few together towards seasons end and the final game of the season we were comfortably in the 8 but a chance for 4th if we could beat the Tigers, who were playing for a spot in the finals. We smoked them, the Bombers got 8th, the Tigers finished in their then usual spot of 9th and we ended up 4th. Unfortunately under that finals system it didn't carry the same advantages as the present system. We were stiff in 98 - we were the only team to beat the eventual Premiers in that finals series. 1990 was our year and really the one we let slip. We won 16 games - a very high number to finish only 4th (in the final year of the old final five) and but for a terrible hiding we got against North Melbourne we would have been outright second. We beat Essendon (top) twice; we beat the Eagles in Perth; we beat Hawthorn in successive weeks including the Elimination Final, to end their run of successive GF's (1983-1989, then back in 1991) and we had ended Collingwood's finals series in 1988 and 1989. We really were probably the best side in the comp in 1990 but a shocking performance in the semi final against the Eagles, after the enforced week off because of the Collingwood/Eagles draw and an injury during training to our 1990 Band F G.Lyon, ended any hopes of the breakthrough. Northey was a great coach but I reckon he'd think 1990 was really the one that got away. Of our 5 consecutive years of finals under him, I think we maxed ourselves out in all of them but 1990.

  41. Yeah we were 2nd or 3rd after round 16 1988 after smashing the Pies off the G and then lost 5 in a row. Had to beat Carlton in round 22 to sneak into the 5, had we lost the Bombers would've played finals. We lost to some average teams in 88 too, Saints at Moorabbin (wooden spooners), Richmond late in the season, Bulldogs and Swans at the G. I reckon we did the same thing throughout the Northey years too, there was always a run of games mid-late season that cost us a double chance. Actually a similar thing happened in 94 too under Balme, can't remember about 98.

  42. We beat Hawks in round 18 2004 to go top of the ladder. The only time barracking for the Demons I can recall being top of the ladder that late in the season. Only other times I can recall were early in the season in 1990 (round 5) and 1994 (round 6) maybe.

  43. Lovett another of those mid-90s perennially injured players that cost us the chance at a flag. Schwarz, Lyon, Tingay, Lovett, Prymke, Charles - I'm sure there's more. With Lovett it was back-related hamstring issues from memory?

  44. It's a disgrace that we never managed a top 4 finish from 2002-2006, considering the list we had, and the way we predictably fell off a cliff at the end of each season. 2004 was probably our best shot. That said, we never really had a side capable of beating Brisbane/ Port/ St Kilda in a final. We were a team of honest tryers, with a handful of very good players - but I always felt we were 2-3 gun players short of the best teams. That was Hawthorn. We were belted by Port by 70 points the following week. We might have sat on top of the ladder, but we were a fair way off the pace.

  45. 2006 we lost twice to Carlton who only won 3 games for the season. Win those two and we finish top 4 and dont have to travel to Perth for the semi final.

  47. Hawks president Jeff Kennett has proudly revealed they have the war chest to survive 2020 and told struggling clubs to lift their game. I'm not sure what pride there is in raking money in from gambling and depriving your membership of four home games a year for a big cheque from the Tasmanian government. It might have been more appropriate if he'd told struggling clubs to lift their gaming.

  49. Best match I’ve ever attended was the ‘Merger Match’ against Hawthorn Round 22 1996. Hawthorn by a point, Dunstall kicks 10 (including 100th), Neitz kick 6, Farmer 4. Hawthorn needed a win to play finals, a Melbourne win could mean it was the last time either team played in the AFL. Incredibly vocal, passionate and emotional crowd.
