  1. The most disturbing part of this is that you follow Ricky Nixon on twitter.

  2. Disagree strongly on many points. To state that Sam Frost is better than May is quite baffling.

  3. Lol @praha You're just posting whatever suits your doomsday, hyperbolic, OTT negative outlook. No Brisbane in the frame = we can't prise him out of Collingwood. Then Brisbane show up = Brisbane has "gone past us". If we were Brisbane you'd be critical of our 0-2 straight sets home finals exit. You'd note that we had no injuries all year (which probabilities suggest won't happen again in 2020), and you'd note that our fixture only had one repeat game against the top 8 and in our 9-game winning streak we only beat two top 8 sides, one of which was a faltering Geelong by 1 point. Brisbane looked good this year. We looked just as good last year. Both young, both taken ages to make finals. Never mind the inaccuracy of calling Tomlinson a Frost replacement (by the way, if the media reports are true we'll be paying Tomlinson less than what Frost wants, and we get a draft pick out of trading Frost with no pick needed to get Tomlinson).

  4. Jesus we’re a depressing bunch on here lately. This is a bad as I remember it ever being. Although on the positive everyone seems in agreement on the depressing sentiment so there’s little arguing. Im going to go out on a limb here. Melb has an industry acknowledged wealth of talent.. we were absolutely crucified by injuries last year and a lack of prep preceding that. People know this. Goodwin still seems to be held in high regard and our facilities aren’t [censored]. There not like the pies but they’re not [censored]. If im Elliot and I get to train really close to where I used to, get a better deal with a side that may come again with a rush ( I’m a believer) in 2020 then why not us?

  5. Getting a bit loose on detail in your haste to outrage, or what? Of course, none of us really know, but most reports say Frost wants $650k while Tomlinson deal is for $500k. And Tomlinson is a free agent, whilst Frost could generate a draft pick. Not that they would play in the same position anyway. And "another indictment on Goodwin and co at the hands of Brisbane"??? That made me lol! We're you shaking a fist in the air as you wrote that?

  6. We're really scraping the bottom of the barrel if we're putting any credence into what Ricky Nixon has to say. The bloke struggles to sit the right way on toilet seat.

  8. Pleasing news! Source/link? Says the poster who's developed a "doom spiral" narrative and takes every opportunity/topic to repeat it. I just can't stand the way any piece of news is, for you, another example of the club being on its knees. Maybe you've just gone off a cliff in terms of your optimism/confidence in the club, and whilst that's understandable I find your arguments at times to be anything other than convincing.

  10. I've got no idea where Elliott will go but I think he will leave Collingwood because otherwise he would have said he's staying already. His decision on Brisbane v Melbourne will be mainly based around where he wants to live. Does he want to leave his social network in Melbourne, is there a lure of Brisbane being "out of the footy bubble". Does he want to be close to family (really, after living in Melbourne for so long), what does his girlfriend/wife want to do - I don't know if he's married. Does he want the hassle of moving home. It will depend on other things: how does he compare the clubs potential - I don't think this is the issue many are making out. Everyone in footy knows why we faltered this year and how easily fixed it is. And a tougher draw and a few injuries in Brisbane next year might see them fall. how does he respond to the coaches - MFC have attracted just about everyone we've wanted to since the Roos/Jackson era. Richardson and Burgess against stiff opposition, May and Lever when there were other suitors. Both coaches/footy departments are very impressive internally. What role does the club want him to play. Midfield/forward, forward. Does he know others at the Clubs. and the list goes on. People are taking a far too simplistic a view of this. The offers will be similar and his decision will be fundamentally personal and not related to rating one club above another. Edit: Dazzles information, if true, now means Collingwood are back in the frame and will most likely retain him. Players basically prefer the devil they know....

  12. Didn’t want him anyway, he can’t even spell Adam. Comedy gold aside, surely his next gig will be as a senior coach? Jeez if we have another poor season, what might be at the end of next year? Clubs are happy for assistants to break contracts to allow them to pick up a senior gig. Food for thought.

  13. I can't think of a single time Mahoney has come out and said anything about a player we've been targeting without them already being on board. We don't tend to release who we're going after, despite often going fishing (contrary to the seeming Demonland belief that we rarely have a crack at players). The fact we have mentioned Elliott this time, leads me to deduce that he's already committed to us. Clearly not contractually, but probably verbally. It doesn't look good if you come out and do a North and then not land the player. Of course that happens from time to time, but as Andy suggests, optics are important. To managers and to clubs. It could be wishful thinking, but it reminds me of Judd touring our facilities before he came back from the West. Was already signed, sealed and delivered by all reports, but he still went through the facade of touring the facilities, if for nothing else, ego. I'm not suggesting that Elliott's is necessarily about ego, but that could come into it. I reckon it's between Collingwood and Melbourne, and we're in the box seat unless they up their offer and he does a backflip. Yes, this is all compete speculation.

  17. Here's the thing with Frost that I think our bias (and I mean that in a good way) gets in the way of: Over the past few seasons we've recruited quite heavily in our back half. Hibberd, Lever and May have all been brought it in at a pretty decent cost, and it was clear that guys like Oscar and Frost were viewed as nothing more than depth players. Why else would we have gone on such a recruitment drive in our defence? If we believed those two were the future then we would have backed them in. Recruiting those three over the past few seasons is evidence of the fact that we didn't. However, with injuries, Frost stood up in defence and had a pretty darn good season. Nothing wrong with that and, at times, he really did some good stuff. Other times... not so much. But in such a horror season he stuck out like dogs balls with his run and dash and his ability, at times, to play very well on key forwards. Because of this season, he is asking for a very big pay rise, which the club refuses to meet and with good reason. Our first choice back line doesn't include him, and he is asking for money that would indicate that he is a key cog in our backline. There is nothing wrong with him asking for that money based off this season, but there is nothing wrong with the club putting what they think is a fair contract on the table either. Obviously there is a gap there and he looked elsewhere to see what he could get. The Hawks have obviously offered him better terms, or he sees the Hawks as an opportunity to play AFL footy regularly as opposed to potentially spending more time at Casey in 2020. The club would be making a bad decision paying big bucks to a bloke who not only has his flaws, but also doesn't fit in our best 22. We can't sign blokes to big dollars in case we have a few injuries - Oscar and Petty are more than capable of coming in where needed and they're being paid far, far less to do it. The club is well within it's rights to do what it has done, just as Frosty is. If he leaves and we can get a pick out of it in the second round then I won't be complaining.

  18. Collingwood have offered him 3 years and just by coincidence he starts his internship at CGU on Monday which pays 500k a year.

  20. OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THE CLUB HAS HIM OUT DOING THIS KIND OF THING RIGHT AFTER SURGERY TERRIBLE INJURY MANAGEMENT HE IS CLEARLY LEAVING NOW JUST WATCH AS THE CLUB ROLLS OVER IN THE TRADE.

  23. Mahoney also said we weren't going to add any more assistants too, didn't he? I wouldn't believe everything I hear from Mahoney. He's playing a game. That's his job.

  24. Mahoney put that rumour to bed a few days ago on trade radio. I'm inclined to believe him, especially if Nixon is the one spreading the rumour.

  25. I still believe we told him to explore his options and didn't offer him a contract. We probably told him he'd be on the fringe and be on minimum dollars, playing some time at Casey and despite not wanting to leave, Frosty had no alternative but to explore his options. Hawthorn have probably said, yep, we'll take you on. We like your dash and we need some defensive reinforcement, and we'll back ourselves in to use your attributes for good.

  27. I have been swayed by the powerful logic in a number of posts in this thread. Elliott's decision is basically a referendum on our club. Him choosing lions over us would be a clear statement that we are a club no decent player wanrs to go to and further evidence of a club in crisis, how poor Goodwin is(ooh isnt fagan just wonderful) and how damaging 2019 really was. On the back of demons players left right and centre wanting out like the exodus out of the crows we are a rabble.

  30. His strengths seem to be elite athletic endurance, understanding of required field position/structure, and his height. This absolutely makes him a modern defensive wingman, who gut runs all day to always be defensive side of the opposition, preventing them getting "out the back" or getting the overlap, and quickly plugging the hole when they switch the play. This is an intelligent role, because you need to know even to hang back or when to push forward. His height is an advantage for the bail out kick. He will also push forward to link or threaten when we have the ball. This isn't a high possession or obvious impact role, but it is structurally critical. ANB has been our most successful in this role. JKH has played it when in the side. I think this is what we've tried to use Jones as when he has played on the wing. It isn't an attacking wing role, using pace and/or great kicking to set up attacks. We definitely lack this role, and it is probably what we use our high half forwards for. Harmes plays this role a lot. Elliot and Langdon both would as well.

  32. He could say he’s from Brisbane and goes for the Lions and has been following him since he toured Brisbane’s facilities. And then tell him he’s staying in the room next door, “just knock if you need anything, see you at dinner I’ve reserved the table next to you”.

  34. Give me Langdon over Jones every day of the week. Way more versatile, gets more of it, and is a better disposer of the ball.

  35. Yeh until injury, poor form or otherwise strikes. Remember that time our list was rated number one by champion data going into this year? I remember. We finished second last. Much of champion data as well as any isolated statistical analysis is about as useful as an accordion player on a deer hunt.

  39. The club is looking like they are going to back in Burgess to get May and Lever up and running. Also Hawthorn seemingly value Frost more than us. I like Frost but we can be easily seduced by Frost Ball. But he’s too much of a liability by foot. He needs to be contained somewhat. Maybe hawks more confident of doing this. Hopefully hawks give us more than a token pick.
    3 points
  40. Yep, you could well be right, mate, but he must have known he'd be asked about Langdon, Tomlinson and Elliott. The three guys we've clearly been linked to throughout this period. He'd have had mapped out responses to these questions and there's no reason for him to provide any information that we don't want out there. Say what you like about Mahoney (most of it completely uninformed), but he's a very well regarded figure in the industry. We had an unacceptable 2019, but he's earned my trust as a supporter by landing the two biggest traded recruits on the market, two years running. What's also notable is that in that time, the club hasn't leaked and has only come clean once Lever and May were clearly committed to us. Now perhaps there's further politicking at play in this situation (ie. an ulterior strategy for coming out and discussing the Elliott trade in any detail at all), but if not, I think there's a reason to be still optimistic about us landing Elliott.

  41. Isn't Frosty odds on favourite for the 2020 Brownlow or have I been reading the wrong thread?

  42. I'd hope the footy department are sensible enough to leave whatever we have on the table. Hope we have a decent look into Sam Gray or Dan Butler. Neither would cost that much in terms of both $$ and picks and could end up being to us what Sam Lloyd is to the Doggies now.

  43. This would send DL into meltdown. Frost cleared to Hawks tomorrow at 9.05am and nothing happens for players reportedly coming to us for a few days.

  44. It would’ve been ludicrous to think that, at the end of 2018, any free agent (already based at a Melbourne club) would choose Brisbane over us, if they were to make a move (assuming commensurate offers from the Lions and the Dees). It shows just how bad 2019 was for us. That said, I’ve heard that we’re still up to our eyeballs in this one. It’s not over. Not yet anyway.
    3 points
  45. Exactly. Potentially the only thing we have to offer Elliott ahead of Collingwood and Brisbane is money and length of contract. At the end if 2018 we would have sold some hope too but after last year we can only sell paying overs. Unless we up the ante or have sustained success players will not choose the Demons over successful rivals.

  46. No Elliot, No problem.

  47. One door closes and another one opens. If Elliott chooses Brisbane or stays at Collingwood, it means that we can use the salary cap room that would otherwise have been available for him to chase other fish. I’m not fussed - it’s the nature of this time of year.

  48. Well if Tom ‘even a broken clock is right twice a day’ Browne says we’re out of the race it must be so....... Haha spare me! All we know is that both the Dees and Lions have offered him 3 years and the Pies have offered him 2. Just because he was at the Lions most recently doesn’t mean that’s where he’s going to end up. Both Fagan and Noble have simply said they have put forward the offer to Elliot, just as Melbourne have.
