  1. I love what Hogan could have brought but time started ticking after the Sydney game last year so we already have some evidence. 2018 Record. With Hogan, wins against final top 8, 0 out of 6. Hogan kicked 8 goals Without Hogan, 4 out of 5. Weids kicked 8 goals. Hogan is a huge talent. We didn’t make the most of his speed which is what should set him apart. But for all his strengths attitude was and is questionable and forward pressure was poor. We’ll perform far better if Weids kick 30 goals but simply applies pressure. Good exhibit is the Port game last year where we kicked 9 goals from over 60 forward 50s and Hogan’s direct opponent was BOG. I doubt Weideman let’s that happen.

  3. For what it's worth. I know a chap who barracks for the Lions, an ex Fitzroy fanatic, who has known our Weidemann since he went to school with his daughter of the same age. He has followed his progress through the various under age competitions - he grew up in Vermont, a very strong Aussie Rules football region - and he vows he has not seen anyone with the same ability, potential and attitude. He was critical of some aspects of Weidemann's Finals games - he said he is still not running in and imposing himself the way he did when he was a junior, adding, but that will come when he gains self belief and more confidence. I also saw him kick 6 goals in the first half against a strong Box Hill side in 2017. When that player presents - as he already has against Geelong in last year's Final - consistently, as he did that day, we will no longer be having this meaningless debate about what have we lost now that Jesse has gone. The bottom line is, he's gone, ta ta, over and out, like Watts, like Frawley, like lots of players who have left the Melbourne Football Club. In the meantime, the Melbourne Football Club as it stands now is poised to go to the next level. When Hogan left, he left a great opportunity for Weidemann to grow and blossom. I am confident we will have lost nothing, just as I am confident that Hogan will kick the odd bag for Freemantle, just as I am confident that this outcome will be, So What?

  4. In what way was his attitude questionable at the MFC? He was among the top trainers each and every pre-season, and came back quickly from injuries and the cancer scare. At the half-way point of last year, he was the hardest-running KPP in the competition and in AA form. If you’re talking about his occasional body language, sure, but what age did Jack Riewoldt stop sooking? Every player has flaws, and who knows what the future will bring, but I don’t think you can fault his commitment to the cause during his time with us.

  5. More than one mention in this thread about how this could lead to big things internationally. What is the actual strategy for this to happen, is it going to be broadcast anywhere where any decent sized international audience will see it? When Port play in China we hear about how the game is being shown locally but are the same people going to broadcast this, or is the idea to create a razzle dazzle highlights package that internationals will accidentally stumble on via social media and YouTube and decide they want to play the game? International expansion is a noble goal, but let's be honest people have been dreaming about the rest of the world taking up the game for decades and because the rest of the world is perfectly happy with the sports they already have the best we get out of it is a handful of interested people and as near to irrelevant international participation figures. If it hits big and suddenly money starts flowing into the game from everywhere you can slap my [censored] and call me Charlie, but given that we can barely get parts of Australia to get interested in Australian Rules Football you're kidding yourself if you think China, India etc.. are going to fall for it just because it's played on a rectangular ground.

  6. So much History is being rewritten since Hogan left. He kicked 47 goals and also assisted in many others The forward line will be completely different with his absence. Better or worse? Time will tell But Hogan was a dam good mobile player, far better than the credit he is given. I hope the Weid is a better option, but he is not there yet.

  8. Horses are a breed of animal that were born to run (and jump) ... they've been on this earth in some form for over 50 million years. Humans for about 250,000 years. The human and the horse became ideal partners as a transportation device. Later on we started racing them. Natural progression/natural selection. What happened was always bound to happen. It comes under the 'Stands to Reason' banner. Before the car it was the horse. The pig is a slaughter animal. So is the sheep, chickens, beef cattle, goats, etc etc etc. We eat them as a matter of course. Some cultures eat dogs & cats. Some even eat Kangaroos and crocodiles (Aussies) The indigenous Australians ate Koala's. Maybe they still do. You live off the land, that's what you do. By comparison, the horse gets treated quite well. If we didn't ride or race horses we'd probably just eat them. So it's ride & race or eat. You wouldn't keep a horse as a household pet unless there was a equestrian aspect to the whole thing. It is estimated that about 250,000 cats & dogs are put down in Australia each year. Unwanted pets by everyday Australians. Yes, I broaden arguments. Because it's necessary. Context and all sides of an argument is my specialty. Anyway, I reckon I'd rather be a horse if I wasn't a human. The gambling aspect is a tricky one ... many punters are addicted and often punt badly as a consequence. But if gambling on the horses was banned it would go underground immediately. The key is to bet with expendable income only and then bet smart. Or not bet at all. On this thread I push the agenda of the best against the best. Group racing is at the forefront of my thinking - not the 7th at Moe. Overseas Group racing as well. The gambling aspect has a direct association obviously but it's not at all like the mindless poker machine industry. Not even close. You could ban poker machines but then the roads North would be filled with Pokies people heading for the border. Nationwide - maybe. But what are the chances? I overreacted as well and have deleted my reply also. Apologies.

  9. Mahoney said May will be the General of the backline. So it doesn't matter if he isn't in the 'official' Leadership Group. Lynch isn't coveting Cotchin's captain role and I suspect May to have the same approach and probably quite happy to have that burden lifted and settle into our structures and our culture.

  10. I'll be far more confident when the Weed has a set shot at goal than Hogan. He'll be walking in holding the ball on the correct side of his body for a start. Who knows, he might even bang a few from outside fiddy as a true power forward should. And as a couple posters have alluded to above. I can't remember a single big tackle from Hogan but I remember several from Weideman. Weed showed he's got all the tools in the Geelong final with sure hands, good disposal by both hand and foot, can clunk the big mark and kick the pressure goals. With another pre-season under his belt and the confidence boost from his game in the final, we'll have a forken ripper.

  11. You could certainly fault his commitment to chase. His second efforts were notable for how infrequent they were.

  12. I don't think Spargo has quite got the hoof to slot them through from much further than 45 out, but otherwise generally agree with your assessment. Will be interesting to see if he can go on with it, improve and hold his spot in the side this year, otherwise the compeditiveness for spots he could easily be squeezed out. Not a slight on him, I just think that's where we are at. I actually think he was probably borderline best 22 at times last year (still a fair feat in your first year), but he just kept holding on and the others that could have taken his spot were not quite up to it at the time.

  13. Not sure where to start here Tappy. Okay, deep breath. Yes, Spargo's small. You can't seriously propose that there's no room for smalls in a current AFL team. It's not height, it's heart. One of the beauties of our game is the variety of builds that compose a successful team. For a first year payer in 2018, with a team under the pump for a finals berth, I'm not sure what else you could have expected from him. Not fast? He's quick and sharp at the fall of the ball and knows where his best positioned teammate is and delivers more often than not. Review some replays if you doubt this. Can't kick? Now you're really going out on a limb. Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember him slotting one, under some pressure, from just outside 50 from the members half-forward flank. And his teammates got around him. Not to mention he was nominated for one of the top 5 MFC goals of the year. Not strong? You're having a laugh. He's strong like Boomer Harvey was. You play to your best with the hand and height you're dealt. Not in the top 25. We'll see.

  16. I'm newly rusted on to Laddies so I'm not sure what the TAB offers now DZ Going straight out on KC wouldn't have been all that different anyway in terms of the odds offered ... and lets face it, the 3rd pick should have saluted anyway. But sometimes the close one and the luck goes the other way and you get the win.

  26. Ha! Sporting arguments fall into the same area as religious & political discussions. Endless drama indeed. Anyway, with Coral Bay drifting a tad I ended up getting 58-1 (boosted) As always, fingers crossed. There are a few races that I'm interested in today ... more so the Blue Diamond Preview's. But just watching (no bets on the 2yo's) with a view to the future. Welcome back Wadda

  27. The player that has become a leader on and off the field and shows it so strongly is Neville Jetta a no nonsense person that had to restart his career as a rookie and fight his way back on to the list and be in our best 22. Leads by example. A WA product that became a loyal Dee. IMO a co Vice Captain would be just reward. A true Champion person.

  32. I’m thinking it’ll be co-captains again this year. The idea of Viney as sole captain next year is logical but I wouldn’t be surprised if Max is elevated to sit beside Viney and co-captain model continued. My group: CC: Viney/Jones VC: Gawn Others: Tmac, May, Vanders, Jetta. I believe May is a logical choice for the back half with the removal of Lewis. Jetta is just too inspirational to ignore any longer and I love Vandenberg setting the tone with crunching forward half tackles and hard bumps to help get the team up when needed.

  33. When he is on, Jeff is silk, and it happens too infrequently throughout a season. If I was 14yo I would want Garlett for the 'excitement' - as it stands 14 goals in 18 games as an 18yo who provides pressure and contributes with greater effect for others to score goals as part of an overall system is who I'd be having.

  35. Sorry 'Macca'...shouldn't really have posted. Saw racing, saw red... We all have our irrational sides. I know for a lot of people it's innocent fun, for many others it's the opposite. I have a very personal reason for hating it with a passion. This has been triggered again recently.... It's not the gambling side per se although that is at issue for many (I would think poker machines fall more on the evil side). I've removed my post...a bit mean spirited by me.

  38. Hunt was so good in 2017, I thought we had a star on our hands. Let's hope he can get back to it. So quick, hard at it and a good kick once he slows down enough to pick a target. An in-form Hunt off half back or a wing makes us a better team

  41. Yeah, I can see your point of view Adam. However, I don't really view it as being about Jonesy's ego, but more about recognising his stalwart leadership over an arduous journey for our Club. If for some reason that's not in the best interests of the Club as a whole, then the sure, scenario obviously changes. I agree 100% with your second sentence, and I have no doubt that both Jones and Lewis would do exactly that.
    2 points
  42. No change for 2019 but I do support the idea of Max being co-captain with Jack once Jones has stepped aside as his career enters its last couple of years.
    2 points
  43. I like the current structure with two joint captains and joint VCs. We only moved to this smaller group earlier this year, and it would be silly to change it now imo. I'd love to see Max as joint captain with Jack, but I think it's unlikely to happen for 2019. It might be seen as too disruptive, and unfair on Jonesy who led us well through the 'dark times' when we had no other 'real' leaders. He has earned another year, I reckon. I think Lever will probably be promoted for 2020, when I'd expect Lewis to step down. A definite 'no' on May from me. He needs to earn his stripes at Melbourne before being considered.
    2 points
  44. I expect Tom McDonald, Jetta and Lever to be under serious consideration. I think they'll give May a year to just settle and not give him any leadership titles. Play your role and lead by your own standard.

  45. I've had the pleasure to listen him speak at a few functions since he has arrived and as you said he just oozes leadership. I was extremely impressed at the player sponsors function at the beginning of the season when he just came up to a small group of us and introduced himself and started chatting. In all my time going to functions with players in attendance not one player has ever done that. Having said that I don't expect players to do this but it was a nice surprise for a young player at his first official function.

  47. I'm a little surprised that with all the forward talk there is never a mention of Spargo ? He pretty much cemented a spot last year as our small crumber in the forward 50 and from what I saw did a pretty good job Seems like everyone thinks there are others ahead of him now - I feel the coaches like him because he seems to play very much to his instructions / team focus I would expect he will still be very much in the mix this year unless he has gone backwards

  48. I had to work this afternoon, so pics on here and Insta tonight Fritsch was the standout, with Salem running him a close second and Tommy Mc next, in my humble opinion of course Umpires there again, which is great initiative It was a really good near 3 hour session, for a hot sweaty session the skills were excellent Tommy Mc charged past me on way back to AAMI in just shorts, obviously the barefoot is the rule, was hardly sweating Vanders proves footy is back, has a lovely black eye, as displayed on the party shirt photo on here Even though he has a fight on his hands reckon Jeff Garlett will shut up some of the experts on here, the battle for the small forward spots is going to be hot

  49. Overall thoughts: - Game simulation was high intensity, Macca made big point of saying to the lime coaches that if we can execute in last 15 when other sides are knacked, we’ll Win. This seems to be a real mean theme this year, as too often we let close games slip and could easily of won top 2 spot if we won 90% of those close games. Standouts: Fritsch disposal and acc of touches. Vanders was a bull and did some great work entering attacking situations turning slow transitions into scoring plays. Brayshaw showed great hands & timing. Pruess was solid w/disposal. May solid & gave his all through entire session l, and was certifiably buggered at end of the training session. Tmac was sensational with hands & positioning, looked cut above. Nev was talking all throughout and encouraging every play, whilst also showing absolutely insanely accurate short passes. Sparrow looks to be one they’re working to develop foot skill wise before anything else and his focus was solid all session. Chandler to me is a sleeper too. Has real poise & game sense. Oscar was frustrating coaches quite a bit throughout missing key instructions & being a bit clumsy. Clarrie’s size is at another level again - 2-3cm talker IMHO to 12 months ago & bulk is now more refined clearly more powerful in arms especially. Joel Smith’s hands again looked great but foot skills short are really questionable & can’t see him breaking into back 6 this year will be more a fwd and utility option. Fritter clearly a wingman and sweeper. KK, Salem, May, Lever, Hibs & Nev all look like forming a truly gifted backline with Frosty ahead of Oscar for Mine. Petty worked reallly strongly all session, def has development to come and could be ready to make a mark if called upon. Jeffy looks a little behind fitness wise but is def pushing with Bedford for small spot.
