  4. Attended training/family day this morning. I reckon about 2000 people there on a chilly morning. I have been attending training off and on now for I suppose 5 years and it is interesting to see how the club has evolved in this as it moves to elite performance. Mostly in the past training has been pretty regimented and predictable. Today I noticed a crucial difference. It was much much more accountable. For instance, in front of us there was a match simulation amongst I suppose a dozen senior players with handballs and kicking, marking etc. For the first ten minutes or so, they continually missed their targets, which prompted the coach (l didn’t recognise him) to yell at them very loudly, to the extent when it continued he brought them in and gave them a serious dressing down. After that it was almost flawless. i have never seen that before at a Dees training session. I suspect it reflects the elite demands that are on this group. About time too, but also symptomatic of the group’s expectations and how ruthless they are now to achieve them. lt was wonderful to see.

  6. Great turn out by the fans. Our colours are everywhere, kids calling out the names of their heroes, flags are being waved and doggy's in the red and blue. Good job by the Army and admin to create suitable finals atmosphere for the MFC players and staff. No Mitch Hannan, Jordan Lewis, Joel Smith, Jeff Garlett, Tom Bugg or Jayden Hunt. Rehab had Dom Tyson (some skill work, mainly laps), Mitch King, Corey Maynard and Oskar Baker. Test group had Aaron vandenBerg and Jack Viney, both later joined the main group. Jack getting congrats from players and fans when he joined. At the end of training he continued running laps by himself. No surprises in the forwards, backs or mids grouping. Mids were tackling and pressuring each other reasonably hard. Forwards goal kicking pract ice as was the whole squad at some times. It was an extended session of simulations. They were hard at the contest. I thought we were a bit off with our skills, though a few stood out - James Harmes, Bailey Fritsch, Neville Jetta, Tom Mcdonald, Jay Kennedy-Harris, Aaron vandenBerg and it was good to see Jack Viney get his hands on it. At one stage the playing group pulled away from the coaching staff and had a pow wow together. Looked liked it was led by Nathan Jones. Good to see them taking self responsibility for some poor play. Plenty of running work was also done. Michael Hibberd wearing number 38 on his back. Hypothetical match committee: Working on ingraining habitual behaviors, such as lowering the eyes, finding the corridors, rolling off the mark, moving the ball quickly and spreading. Reinforcing working hard and reacting quickly when it is turned over. A bit concerned about our clangers and rushing the set kicking. Go Dees, from kev Martin

  8. DV8 I'm not sure if you know that the Club have been having open training sessions like this for many years with BBQ, Coffee and Demon Shop always operating. They are usually at the end of the year and before the season starts and then the game against Collingwood. The Club does not make any money from the BBQ's - all funds go back to the Demon Army to support them in their endeavours. I thought today was especially well organised by the Club having some of the Membership staff there to answer any queries for the coming finals and also 2019 memberships. The Club was hoping that there would be around 1200 at the training session given the weather but there near were to 2000 and one of the best things to see was that there a huge number of children there in the red and blue. Our future. So I do take issue with you that "the Club continually leaves the supporters out of their thoughts". Of course there is always the issue of the value of our supporter base and if the Club did not have that as a focus you would I am sure be crying that the Administration were inept. The cost of the day is part and parcel of what is "pay back" for the magnificent and longsuffering support that the Club has had over many years. Today was a huge success so now all we have to do is put it on the park (MCG)

  10. Went along with the family and really enjoyed this first finals training session for 12 years, my brother and I reminisced about the junction oval training sessions back in 87 and even at the start of this century. We have come so far as a club since those days not so long past. Spent some time looking at the rehab group where Dom was worked hard along with Oskar and Mitch. He was the stand out of the three not surprisingly and looks to be in the van to play on Friday if required. Oskar seemed to move freely and was very keen on the snap on goal with mixed success. It was great to also see Lever walking laps as well as Corey Maynard jogging laps at a fair pace. Thank you to whoever informed us of Lewis' illness, hopefully not too serious. The big take away from the session (apart from the delicious sausages and donuts (see above)) was the speed at which they work. Sitting in the stands each week the whole game seems much slower than when seen up close. All in all the main group looked sharper as the session progressed. We also commented on what a fantastic late season addition Vanders has been (it appears his nickname is "Checkers" - any insight on that would be appreciated), his size and strength is just what September needs! We left with full stomachs and high hopes. Go Dees! Footnote (no pun intended): it was great to see the co-captain back in the main group, he looked to pick up the pace quickly and slot back in with ease. Can only be a good addition to an already strong lineup.

  12. Got to hand it to Pedo. Keeps giving 100% and putting his hand up for senior selection. Would have to know his days on the MFC list are probably numbered. Not going to give up and leaves everything spent on the park. Kudos.

  15. GOOOOOOOD MORNING ALLL!!!! Its this time of year again, Dec playing in his third consecutive VFL finals series. Weather will be a factor at good old Casey Fields today but our boys know how to utilise it better then anyone. Geelong have been the only team to really have it over the team the last few years, I know we had a good clutch win a month ago but the Cats did beat us at home at the start of the season, but I’ll back us in today, especially with a few of those AFL boys back in. I’m attending the before game function and will have a good view from up on the balcony this arvo, so if the alcohol doesn’t get too me too much I’ll be sure to keep you updated throughout the day. As for DiamondJims question, I’ve said before that outside the AFL grounds, Casey Fields has got to have the best playing surface going around, and the boys love it.

  18. Had an enjoyable game at casey but did get cold feet. I will touch on a few of the senior players. Pederson was great especially up forward. Created many chances up forward with pressure. Hunt got better as the game went on. His 3rd quarter was excellent. Hannan was very good all game I thaught. Provided some run and takes the right option most of he time. Took a speccy in the last and I would be playing him on Friday night. Bugg was very good in the middle. and got a lot of clearances. Again disposal was ho hum Joel Smith played well but can't see him being picked for Friday. Played forward a lot. Both Wagners played well. Garlett actually laid a tackle or two and was involved with the game without being outstanding. He gets heavily tagged at vfl level. Dec Kielty played a very solid game down back. They hardley took a mark in there forward line. Just want to say that Machaya ( 24 ) was brilliant. We should recruit him because he has talent to burn. Goal in last quarter was a gem. Collis played very well as well..

  29. Keilty had a good game, but was so close to having a great game. Got his hands to a lot of contest but dropped a few marks, however had a number of very important spoils and defensive efforts that mirrored Casey’s intensity all day.

  37. That is absolutely brilliant. Was hoping I could catch it on TV, but it wasn’t televised where I am. What a sensational start to Casey’s final campaign. Absolute credit to Rawlings, he has been great both at getting Casey up and also developing our players. Lets hope the senior boys can get the same result next Friday... no pressure!

  42. 2018 Sam Frost This year at the 'G we are: 1-5 with Sam Frost out of the side 4-1 with Sam Frost in the side. For the way we play, Sam Frost is a pivotal player for us at the MCG…and no one would put him in our best players, that's for sure.

  44. You've had one poster laugh at your post and another say, "Not your finest work", but, of course, you're (mainly) right. I wrote the following (in part) in July, 2009: A few years ago Craig Cameron effectively denounced the widely held belief that “a team is only as good as the bottom 6 of its best 22”. He argued and conclusively proved to me that a team is only as good as it ‘best 6’. He pointed out that if one analyzed the end of year ladders over recent seasons there was a strong correlation between the ‘H&A’ ladder at round 22 and the quality of a club’s top 6 players. In most cases the ladder at year’s end mirrors the quality of the team’s top 6 players. Naturally, it won’t be absolute due to vagaries such as injury, but the pattern is undeniable. And it’s not to say that the bottom 6 isn’t important to a team’s flag chances, as we know that all great sides have good depth, but it’s the stars that determine how well a team can be built and how deep it will go into September. Now, I need to add that I've shifted my view somewhat, as the game HAS changed. In the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s the team that had the most talent nearly always won. It was predominantly a 'man on man' contested game. Flooding and zones were coming in, but even so more often than not the most talented teams won, especially prior to 2005. The evolution of the game is fascinating and right now the team with the most talent at the top end is far more regularly beaten by less talented teams due to game-plans, systems, and the fact that talent is now spread over 18 teams. I mean, who really thinks Clarkson's team is a top 4 team on talent alone ? Obviously, the best combination is a highly drilled pressure team that scores well and has the most top end talent. As 'Old' has mentioned, the Bulldogs were an anomaly, but also testament to the shift in football. So, as we know there are exceptions to every rule, but I still hold firm to the view that 'stars' win you flags. They make lesser players better and give those bottom six players the opportunity to make a difference. Those bottom six players don't get the chance to shine without the influence of their team's elite. The perfect combination is having one of the competition's elite top 6-8, a rock solid contested game-plan, and the depth of talent so no-one in your 22 gets exposed. That they can shine in pivotal moments. But be under no illusion, your top end talent is far more important to your fortunes than your bottom end talent. Especially in finals. I don't hold the view that your best 6 are cancelled out by the opposition's best 6 and that the bottom 6 are left to duke it out. It's possible that variations of this can occur, but in the main you need your best players shading the opposition's best players, which allows your core players the best opportunities to perform.

  45. The name proposed by Deanox - “The Draft, Trade and Cheese Board” seems to have struck a Red and Blue Vein of support that’s all too rare among Demonlanders. I therefore declare that it’s a feta accompli and without further ado, let’s kick off with the new board. And just to help newer posters, here’s an example of how to initiate a new thread and, in doing so you might just Krakouer Barrel of laughs:- The Matthew Limburger Thread A caller just rang SEN to report that Bomber ruckman Matthew Limburger is a bit cheesed off at having to play second fiddle to Tom “Taco” Bellchambers in the ruck and is thinking of taking a dip at the trade market. The caller described the 202cm ruckman, who has only just turned 30, as the cream of the available big man crop and if he’s looking at topping off his great career, there would be no better place for him to do it than at Melbourne. ”He’s the Big Cheese””, the caller said. Hearing the news made me grin because I think the story is nothing more than waffle. A frustrated Limburger is pictured below sitting out a recent game at the MCG.

  46. Dropped by Gosches this morning, the boys were doing some light training, ball movement drills, then goal kicking practice from all angles. Max is very good from the boundary lines both sides. I didn’t see Frost kick a goal from any angle, better stay down back. Counted 19 players training, no Kent, Tyson or VDB? No Hannan, no JSmith, no Viney today, he trained yesterday. TMac moving well, not sure why VDB was missing. Thought a couple of fully fit next in line backup players might have been training with the 19. Melbourne Victory training next door, good to see Honda cruising around the pitch, looks very good with a ball at his feet. Oh and Vince was running laps even though he announced his retirement?
