  1. Whateley isn't the moron here.

  4. You got unlucky with him playing in the 1’s.

  5. Whatley is one of the best commentators going around and possesses a very football brain. He certainly knows his stuff and has the ability to communicate this without ego or fanfare. He and SEN aren’t a great fit though imho. Commercial drive-time radio calls upon a different skill set. ABC grandstand and the Offsiders haven’t been the same without him.

  6. Sam credits Jesse with his improved form http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2018-05-11/weideman “He took me under his wing early this pre-season and we’ve become a lot closer and are working a lot more together on different parts of my game. It’s been really good and beneficial...He came to my VFL games early on and spoke to me at each quarter. He gave me clear instructions and it was good to have someone to work with and look up to.” Nice work by Jesse!

  7. It's more about the quarters we are losing and how much by that is of more interest I think, last week was as close to 4Q effort we have seen in a very long time. You can win 3 out of 4 quarters and still lose....

  8. Not sure I understand what you have said here, but as you enjoy saying, everyone is entitled to their opinion and mine is that ANB has been terrible this season. I wish he was in better form but he isn’t. He would not be in my side, but yes I am not the Coach, only a member/supporter.

  10. The main thing for most players is playing with their mates as long as they're being fairly rewarded. If they think the team is about to embark on something special, which they do, they won't leave (unless special circumstances, such as go home factor or a personal issue). Brayshaw won't be going anywhere.

  11. It’s ANB’s fumbling that’s the biggest issue for me. He’s fumbled under any sort of pressure plenty of times in every game. Where a clean take would’ve had us moving on every occasion. Very costly. He’s not big and strong enough to bully the ball back once he [censored] up. Then he roves the pack like Eddie Betts and kicks a checkside goal with 5 minutes to go like it’s nothing. A touch more of that would be handy. I blame myself for predicting he’d be top 5 b’n’f this year.

  12. This has to be the most ridiculous post in many years. I just can’t imagine what sort of meaningless life one would have to lead to allow such an insignificant comment by a sports journalist that has to fill 19 hours of microphone time per week to upset them in the slightest.

  13. Agree - Gerard is a bit too 'cerebral' for the SEN milieu - they much prefer the bogan, 'Loveable Aussie Larrikin'-style of commentator

  14. I have been Watching this moron on Foxtel, and listening to his diatribe on SEN for all of 2018. I have also been watching him on FOXTEL in AFL360 for several years. This year he has outgrown his own brains. He now thinks he owns and runs the AFL. From a guy that has not played decent football, but now thinks he is a football guru, is beyond me. Earlier this year he stated he picked Melbourne for a Top 8. Round 1, yes we lost a game we could have won (Against his team GEELONG) Round 2 we won against the Lions (no comment ) Round 3 We won against the Roos (no comment) Round 4 We lost against Hawks ( agreed a bad game ) (his comments were we couldn't make the the Top 8) Round 5 we lost against Tigers (we were with the top team for 3 1/2 quarters) Round 6 we demolished the bombers (no comment) Round 7 we demolished the aints ( no comment) Round 8 The Dees have the most to lose this weekend. ( sorry Gerard Your Precious [censored] has more to lose than us Demons) GERARD GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND START LOOKING OUT OF BOTH EYES. (MORON No. 1)

  15. sorry, but if i'm honest it doesn't do anything for me it doesn't look like a football jumper it looks overdone, like some fancy dress, baroque tapestry it might be good art but the mona lisa or blue poles would also make lousy football jumpers i watched the nrl last night and theu had similar overdone garish versions too i'd prefer something more subtle that fitted in without dominating, like the anzac jumper jmo

  16. Well, that’s probably down to opinion. The way I see it is that he confident, assured and articulate. Some may see that as arrogance, and that’s fair enough. The egocentric commentators seek to sensationalise, exaggerate, crack in jokes, make up nicknames, laugh hysterically at their own jokes and treat the viewers/listeners like they’re fools. Basically Brian Taylor and all his ‘mates’.

  17. I suppose the selection makes sense, Hunt has become predictable as he bombs long to the same spot every game whereas Neal Bullens kicks can go anywhere in a 360 degree direction, I think this unpredictability is what’s keeping him in the team, keeps the opposition guessing......

  18. @Demons11: you must be new around here. We don’t try and look for reasons why the unpopular player might retain his spot and explore what the coaches see that we don’t. What we do here is conclude that the hopeless coach doesn’t know what he’s doing and the player must have compromising photos of said coach. Don’t you know that’s the only logical conclusion?

  22. I bet if PJ was at Ess in 2012 their experimental human laboratory on players would never have happened. They lost plenty when PJ left, not the least of which was their moral compass. Their loss was our gain.

  23. Agreed. The more important stat is the %. No use winning 3 quarters a game by a point and lose 1 by 40.

  26. Remember it was only a few years ago that the only positive commentators or those on here could find was that we won more quarters than we had the year before.

  27. Add me in to those who like Whately. He beats all the ex-player commentators hands down, and even if I don’t like all his opinion pieces, I can see where he is coming from. I don’t perceive any major bias.

  28. lol what a fascinating thread. Whateley said don’t undo the good work we’ve started. Which is absolutely correct. Probably the least worthy thing to get your knickers in a knot over in the history of knicker knots. Whatever the [censored] a bex is, have one.

  31. I agreed with what he said. The 4-week block (Essendon, Saints, Suns, Blues) are all must win games now, mainly because of the games we dropped in the first part of the season. Because of our losses, especially that against Geelong, it has put extra pressure on this run of games. How I see it - we did what we should've against Essendon, albeit in a half of footy, then against the Saints we finally played 4 reasonable quarters. The issue for us is that we often get ahead of ourselves, so having played a decent "all round" game last week, there is that trust issue that we won't back it up. If we win this weekend, then there's no issue, but I, possibly like Gerard, will again have us as the potential "biggest loser" going in to the Carlton game. We have 2 more weeks to prove to the footy world that we can be trusted.

  34. I think a problem for many, certainly myself , is Ive never really seen much of Nibbler to suggest he's that good a footballer. He's a standout athlete...playing in an elite level football team, but that and of itself does not qualify anyone as a good footballer. He does a few cameo footy things from time to time but in the main fluffs things as you might imagine a fish out of water to do. Good football teams are made up of .... strangely enough....good footballers. Good footballers possess that 'good footy brain' and have football skills. You can get away without these so much at lesser levels. If we as a club want to experience success. Build a FOOTBALL team. Not an athletics club.

  35. Gerard isn't the most objective type. He would have known Bomber and Hird had history with the gear. I have no affiliation with any club and even I knew Hirdy loved the snow, and according to every Tom, Dick and Harry - Bomber loved the gear for a long time. Gerard is either very bias or just sh*t at his job, and I don't believe he is sh*t at his job.

  36. Most of the team has been out of form this season; but we are still in good shape on the ladder, right in touch with things. And we are still re-grouping our players, from injuries and form.

  37. I’ve listened and watched him for years on the abc, started as a big fan; he knows sport, articulates well, and commentated without ego. However, over the years, I believe ego has become more prominent, he has become nauseatingly sanctimonious to the extent, I can’t listen to him on SEN (or the podcasts). Added to this, let me tell you, (those unfamiliar with him), he has a real bias against Melbourne, I know this for a fact. Chip on the shoulder perhaps

  38. I would prefer the guy who does exactly what is asked of him, and a bit extra ... and that seems to be what ANB and Harmes are doing, at the moment. Presumably Hunt and Jeffy are not. We here don’t actually know what role the coach and the match committee ask of each player. I suspect that given the distances quoted as ANB’s running, that he has been asked to run a lot .... maybe run to offer an option, decoy style at times, and / or the pressure an opponent into an error, even if a stat such as a tackle is not recorded. IMVHO Hunt and Jeff probably have higher overall ceilings, but aren’t doing their roles as requested.

  39. In retrospect it is quite clear that Black Caviar developed her sprinting capabilities whilst Whately was "researching" his book. I've always thought of him as a boring big-nosed [censored] of a man, who knows SFA about sport, and that he probably still lives with his mum and knits jumpers.

  42. I have a lot of sympathy for this fella and anyone else subjected to prejudice. I also think there are broad sections of Australian society which have entrenched racist views, however I am still someone who gets frustrated when Australia is picked out as some kind of racist beacon is an otherwise morally upright world. Huge swathes of Asia and Africa are deeply deeply racist, considerably more so than Australia. Ever heard the Chinese or Indians talk about each other? How about the US where black people cant order a coffee without being molested. Australia had work to do, like all countries, but I continue to believe we are a great, multicultural country whose majority population remain reasonable and fair minded people.

  43. ANB is the best 2 way runner in the league right now. I guess that is why he keeps getting selected, because he can outrun everyone else in the league.

  48. Haven't seen the Hun article, but I suspect the content in the below is either the same or makes similar point. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-tipping-experts-round-7-afl-teams-fox-footy-commentators-blowtorch-questions/news-story/07763614389e8928927a90aef92ce9de This is what I've been saying for weeks. Despite a crap game against the Hawks and average-poor game Vs the Tigers, that we are playing far below our best, but still getting the job done and racking up the four points (be it mostly against poor teams) is a good sign for when we start playing well. Though I don't take too much away from wins against teams like the Bombers and the Saints, at least we are getting the four points, which we might not have in seasons past and they all count the same at the end of the season. I also think based on the form of the respective teams the wins against North and the Lions now look much better than they did at the time.
