  2. Happy to be ignored by the media. We don't handle praise well. The less the better.

  4. Without wanting to create a 'media hates us' palava, I've been moderately amused from afar the difference in the media reporting between the Dee's v Richmond game, and the Collingwood v Richmond game. (granted, I'm in perth, so this may have been well covered over there) Whilst I completely acknowledge that we were insipid against Hawthorn, which is a massive skew in this argument, but that aside, the dee's ran richmond into the 4th quarter, but when we lost by 40 odd points, we were labelled a debacle and 'the most frustrating team in the AFL'. Collingwood however ran Richmond into the last quarter, and lost by 40 odd points. All I've heard since, was how amazing the Pies were, that they've really showed what a great team they will be, that this needs to be the benchmark for how they should play etc etc. I guess its a theoretical question about how long do previous games impact peoples perception of a footy club? With the honourable loss against the cats (I'm not going to whack maxy again), and a Collingwoodesque sustained competitive effort against the tigers, are you allowed one crap game a year? Tigers certainly had one against the saints last year. Or, does that fact that we were crap against hawthorn, and then rolled over against the tiges, make us just crap (as many on here would attest). Or, if you put the hawks game aside, does this change ones perception of how our season is coming together? Apologies if this doesn't really makes sense!

  9. I had wanted him tried forward a few years back. Then he went forward in the second half of a game, saw a bit of it and sprayed every shot he had. Thought he was no chance of making it as a forward after that. His set shot ability is one of the most remarkable turnarounds I have seen and he has obviously worked his backside off on it, a huge credit to Tom

  10. bugger! has been great to see Salem get some form together. have loved seeing him in the middle and winning some clearances. we've needed it with Viney out and Oliver out of form. He is a tough nut to not only play but play well with a broken thumb!

  11. Also metres gained. Love this kid. Beautiful field kick, classy, clean and kills it in the air. Will have his down days because it’s a hard position, but things happen when he gets near it.

  20. well done to get another player on the podcast. Would love to hear from a tactician guru (not necessarily Melbourne) and a player development officer in the future. Keep up the great work

  21. This stat sheet is interesting but we must remember, it is not the number of frees that really count, it is when and particularly, where these decisions are made. Twenty frees in front of goal across a season can make for a successful year!

  22. The Weed has to stay in. If he gets his confidence up and starts to feel more comfortable he will be a massive asset. The 2 contested marks he took in the last qtr against Essendon is just a glimpse of what he might be capable of.

  23. My view is diametrically opposed to yours. He's an incredibly difficult matchup for the opposition, because not only does he have courage in the air, he also has timing. Put simply, he has real ability in the air, which is a rare commodity. To complement this aerial ability he has speed, poise, nous and elite kicking skills. And as he gets stronger with more preseasons he can play an outside wing role Isaac Smith style. Their physical bios are almost identical. Although I'm not sure he'll have Smith's tank. For me, Fritsch is one of the least likely busts I can think of.

  24. You honestly cannot be serious. A howler? You honestly think he made errors in that video? No i don't believe it, you must be having a lend. In no way can Oscar be blamed for that goal. No way. If you watch this video from the 14 second mark you will see that the culprit is initially Oliver for coughing up the ball on the wing, then the midfield for allowing an easy handball to Zaharakis who is all by himself in the corridor and is allowed to take a few steps and under no pressure boot the ball 50 metres to Smiths advantage over the back. And when Zharakis kicks it Oscar is about 10 -15 metres from the spot where it is marked and the same distance parallel from Smith. he had no chance to cut that off. He did pretty well to get back actually. I can't make out the dees player on the half back flank but whoever it is makes no effort to pressure Zaharakis, for instance by diving to smother. Pathetic and the an example of the very thing that causes us to leak goals. Though some still prefer to blame defender in such scenarios as if it is still 1992 and the zone hasn't been invented and only a handful of players players get multiple tackles. But you think Oscar made a howler? Beggars belief. But hilariously provides a concrete example to illistrate my point about confirmation bias.

  28. Has anyone considered Lever is struggling to deal with playing in Oscar’s colossal shadow? But seriously, I don’t even watch Oscar with a critical eye anymore. He’s a good, solid defender who does his job every single week. Anyone still criticising him must forget that the best defenders in the league make mistakes every game. Hurley was touched up by Fritsch and Spargo at times, and Rance was flailing about between Pies kids in their game. Neville Jetta is the only defender to have never made a single mistake in his life.

  29. It’s a great point you make, Collingwood are the media darlings at the moment I guess it’s because no one rated them before the season where everyone rated us, they have won 3 games playing their best football while we are barely going and have won 3, only a matter of time before the wheels fall off at pie land I’m sure you could look through previous years under Buckley and find where they won 3 in a row

  30. I'm old enough to remember another skinny left footer who took marks like that... Not saying that he's going to be anywhere Tulip, but that mark reminds me of our (IMHO) best ever player...

  31. Professional umpires would be a welcome addition to the game.

  32. Who can forget the infamous match against the Weagles in Perth several years ago when the free kick count approaching half time was 20+ to 1. Guess who had the 1? As bad as the count was, what was worse was the lack of outrage at the time and in the period after the game. Admittedly we were at a low point, but such a difference cannot be explained by any rational excuse It had to be poor umpiring. It won't change until the so-called expert commentators learn the rules and call-out the egregious mistakes. It is not an attack on the umpires but, for the good of our great game, it is vital that umpiring is not only at a high standard (as determined by the umpiring rep) but also seen to be at a high and consistent standard by the supporters. The AFL should lift its game!

  33. no doubt about it. But, given how well the last one went, the AFL are about as likely to open an investigation into that as fly to the moon! Maybe we can bring back Brock Mclean and he can say...that "everyone knew the cats were on drugs. We used to buy them off the geelong players after the game" Would it be wrong of me to hope for a situation like that? lol.

  34. Jesse finished the match so you'd imagine he'd be ok to play, otherwise why send him back out there with a 6 goal lead?

  36. What, an ability fly for marks, compete in the air strongly, kick for goal beautifully and hit targets by foot? Nah, no future in the game for that..

  37. I'm a big ANB fan, but he has been ordinary this year. That said, he's clearly playing the role asked of him, as he has continued to get a run. What I would love to see added to his game is the ability to go to an opposition midfielder and shut them down. He has the tank to run with any player in the league, and playing on someone that will get him around the ball more could be a good thing for him. With that in mind, I'd be looking at him running with the likes of Jack Stevens this week. We will need someone to run with Steven, and I'd much prefer that Jones wasn't that man, as he is more value to us playing his own natural game.

  40. On a bit of a tangent, but related note - you know, for all the money that gets put into regurgitated crap footy shows these days, you would think that a half decient rap-up and analysis of what's going on at state league level would make for good viewing wouldn't you. I use to love watching the seconds before the main game, to have a better look at who was comming through, but don't really get that chance much these days.

  41. Got to give some credit to you Drunken and the other punters on this forum who were singing the praises for this guy from early in the piece. Now that we've all had a chance to see what he can do for real, it's not hard to see where that confidence in him came from. Super impressive how well he has taken the step up to senior AFL level at this stage. He just has such great 'natural footballer attributes' about him, it's a thing of true beauty. Will be interesting to see if he can maintain his presence and good form as no doubt he will be targeted and start attracting even more close checking attention from the opposition with how well he is playing and what he is doing for the side.

  43. Its funny, isn’t it? We stick with the Tigers for 3 1/2 quarters and get blown away in the end. The third quarter was some of the toughest pressure football by two teams I have seen in ages. Wrist slashing and the narrative is how bad the Dees are Pies stick with them for 3 quarters and get blown out at the end and ‘they are back’. Tigers are a benchmark. Hate the way the industry panders to the pies and the dons.

  44. By far the most frustrating player on the list for me. I would’ve traded him 2 years ago. I can count the games I’ve been impressed by him on 2 fingers. Brock McLean would push him over 50 even now. Takes an eternity to make a decision, thinks he’s Pendlebury in traffic, he’s more Koschitzke, gets caught. Probably doesn’t matter because he wouldn’t hit the target anyway. The sooner he’s pushed out the better. Apart from the above I’m a huge fan.

  47. He was pushing his luck after the 'Goodwin/camp fiasco' and 'McCartney banished from the coach's box' stories. 'Leaking' the Petracca omission story yesterday was probably the final straw. Let's hope that whoever inside the club is feeding him stories, stops! Or he will still get stuff to write.

  48. Not sure I rate Gary's football intellect too highly though. I think it's a terrible idea as he's a turnover merchant back there, but a gun up the other end. I'm now at the stage of viewing it as akin to playing Hogan back. The guy is one of the straightest kicks for goal I can remember since moving forward. Why not play him there the whole time?
