  2. Lots of sound and fury in the media atm. Clarry, Bugg, Clarry again, ANB/Lewis/30 seconds, Cripps and his poor old leg, thuggery, unsociable, all kinds of stuff. Much most of it unfair or uninformed or just ignorant. That guys and gals is the sound of RELEVANCE. No one bothers to dish out this stuff to teams that win 2 games a year. They do it to teams that have [censored] them off by beating their team. Other sides put up with this sh!t all the time. We have waited years for this. Did we go through the last decade so we could keep being everyone's "second team"? No one fears or respects sad sacks or "second teams". This is the payoff, What the wait was for. We don't need their approval, their sympathy, their anything. Let them rage and fume. Fuggem. Meanwhile we will keep winning, and then win some more. And then win some more just to rub it in. GO DEMONS!

  6. Jason Bennett is a refreshingly low-key but knowledgeable commentator. Pleasant contrast to the usual BT waffle and self indulgent bluster.

  7. Wait wait wait. I am very confused. Didn't the AFL introduce the 2 minute NO SHOT CLOCK rule after Mason Wood milked it to win a game last year? So the AFL introduce a rule with little forethought, knee-jerk a change to it, and then knee-jerk the EXACT REVERSE Seriously this game is administered by monkeys.

  12. Sometimes players turn out better than players taken before them in the draft. Sometimes players take longer to develop than others. It's a freakin' lottery. You're purchasing a 10% complete product. This is a seriously tedious topic. I honestly thought Melbourne supporters would be sick of beating ourselves up over who was selected where, but it would seem our self flagellation knows no bounds.

  13. Not sure that social clubs are the big things they were 20 years ago SWYL. I was big on the idea 20 years ago but now I probably would never go. After a game i sing the song ( well do win fairly often now ) and then go home. Celebrating consists of a couple of single malts and some reflection on life and football.

  15. When one poses a question like this on a fan forum you're on a hiding to nothing, unless the forum's player is in the positive column. I think it's a fair question and the type of question supporters leaning on a bar after the game may discuss, ergo, it's thread worthy. That said, I'm also in the camp that says this question won't necessarily be answered until after their careers, which could be 12 years from now. Some supporters may think 4 or 5 years will provide the answer, but the safe bet is post career. Even nearly 9 years on from their draft day some people would say Naitanui should have been taken and others would argue Watts has been vindicated. In reality, there's still much to play out between those two. There is a view that Curnow slipped due to his off-field indiscretion, but my gut feel is that we always had Weideman as our main target. You don't draft a key tall on how good they'll be in year two, you draft a key forward on what they'll offer in year 6 and beyond. Weideman showed in that one quarter at Casey the talent he has. All that's missing is a body and experience. Both take time and we're in a position to give him that time. So, to answer your question, it's too early to say. Curnow looks great and there's no doubt he and Hogan together for a decade would be a prospect worth salivating. But that doesn't mean Weideman was the wrong call. At this point, there doesn't need to be an either/or.

  16. Chris Scott on AFL 360: "Clayton and Melbourne have come out the bigger man in this situation." Both he and Richo as well as Whately and the other host all agreed the supporter was completely out of line.

  17. Hogan had a direct hand in 2 goals (T-Mac and Melksham's winner). Kicked one himself and missed an early sitter. Our run on in the second was when he was shifted into the middle when they stopped clearing the ball at will. When T-Mac was hot in the third he played wide and high to not allow double teaming. That's a fair role contribution for someone who has hardly played this year.

  18. He can stick a tackle at least. Some missed tackles last week were not good enough. A few were guilty of this. Im still holding out hope for a Cinderella story from JT and a potential Norm Smith medal.

  19. Heaps of Carlton supporters have been moaning about this too. How about just manning up, Carlton? That would have forced ANB to have the shot. It's not our fault, or the fault of the rules, that your players weren't concentrating.

  20. Settle down, BB! Why are you taking out your anger on your letter? What did it do to you to deserve being "roughed up" by you? Pick on something more your size in future, please! LOL

  21. Exactly. Frost went to cover Thomas and massively helped Nev out. Nev's reaction time to spot Simpson running past and get over to cover him, then out-body him and win the ball was outstanding. Great defensive team play that almost certainly saved the game for us.

  22. Not sure if anyone has mentioned that Carlton had 4 No. 1 draft picks and a further 11 first round picks in the team on Sunday. Melbourne had NO No. 1 draft picks and only 4 first round picks. Not to mention Melbourne had less experience and were younger.

  23. I'm pretty angry about this. The Carlton coward has a crack at Oliver and then didn't like copping a response. What did he say, "touch me again and I'll kill you" - what, we all worry that Oliver would jump the fence and attack him? It's an admittedly aggressive response to a fl*g being aggressive towards him but it's wasn't racist, it wasn't sexist, it wasn't homophobic, and it was in response to being unnecessarily pushed/touched/shoved. I see no reason for Oliver to have to apologise which implies the coward deserved an apology of any kind.

  25. The debate/discussion between Binman and ProDee on how the Lever trade would impact our team is one of the best exchanges I've read on Demonland for some time. I didn't get involved then as they presented their views in a way that extra commentary was unnecessary. The weekend provided more fuzziness to any potential trade. Frost played an outstanding game and showed some fairly unique footy attributed for one player. Extreme athleticism and excellent footy skills. There were no glaring footy errors that I recall. Tommy Mac showed a level of competence and confidence forward that suggest maybe a permanent forward role is possible. Lever was outstanding after quarter time for Adelaide. What team wouldn't take him if he wanted to come. I don't shudder the way ProD does when any of our tall backs have the ball. I think Oscar's disposal is much better than represented here and whilst Frost doesn't have huge finesse he very effective and improving quickly. But having said that I love Lever but if he wanted to come it would be great but expensive. If he wants to come to Melbourne city (as with Fyfe and Kelly) it's difficult to understand why we wouldn't be a very desirable destination for all the reasons we know. ProD's suggestion is we attract Lever and Z Jones and use Frost as a trade plus draft picks and other garnish if appropriate. But given the recent performance of our talls and assuming that is maintained and improved (T Mac is new to forward play and Oscar and Frost are improve almost by the game) how important is Lever? Would the incremental benefit be worth the cost or should we look to use what we have to attract (say) Kelly? IMO he would provide what we don't have whereas Lever is just incrementally better. Did the weekends performances change anyone's views?

  30. Very true! And, I think Jordie alluded to this in his Press Conference yesterday. Said he was keeping an eye on the count down clock and also the Umpie. Said he was reasonably confident he'd be okay, as the Umpie also was watching the clock. But, he said, he made sure he went well back from the man on the mark, just in case the Umpie called "play on". So, Jordie was well aware of the Umpie's right to call play on if he deemed it to be deliberate play on. It was, effectively, a gamble on Jordie's part, but a shrewd one that paid off. Well done, Jordie!

  31. While players have 30 seconds, if umpires think they are running down the clock they can call play on before the 30 seconds is up. It was pretty obvious what ANB and Lewis were doing but we got away with it. It would take a brave umpire to call play-on in such a tight game in the last minute but I think they will be be reminded of the rule at their weekly meetings. That aside it was a delight to hear the siren. That is 3 recent games we have won from being aware and clever in the last minutes of play. Edit: part in itallics.

  32. It would be nice to beat the 17th placed side in one of our two attempts this year. Our inability to beat the kangaroos has gone from frustrating to curious. I doubt I'll even celebrate when we do. It's just something that needs to get done.

  34. Yes, but on the other hand, all of us are delighted that Jay asked the question, because Goody's reply gave us some great insights into our coach, that we may not otherwise have been privy to. Jay's question was clearly an attempt to put Goody on the spot. Most coaches would have taken umbrage, and quickly dismissed the question with a glib response, or in some cases, tried to 'put the journo down' with a smart assed reply (Buckley, Brad Scott?). But Goody wasn't 'rattled' for a second. His response was calm, factual, measured and very classy. I found myself hanging on every word he said, and it's not unreasonable to assume that our players would respond in the same way whenever he speaks on important issues. I reckon we have already seen evidence this on the field, and in the strong sense of 'belief' that is emerging within our playing group. IMO we now have many of the key ingredients in place for a serious tilt at a flag over the next few years. Of all the current senoir AFL coaches, Goody would be my first choice to take us there!

  35. Just watching the replay and I noticed that the mate of that delicate flower tried to restrain him at one point. Obviously knows he's an idiot. I too am disappointed the club did not add a comment to the apology saying spectators should endeavour not to make contact with a player whose momentum carries them into the fence. No direct accusation but we know what that means and pretty safe from prolonging the coverage.

  36. I'm not counting us out of this weekend's game against the Crows. Their midfield isn't elite, and if we curb the influence of Sloane then it brings them on par with us. The Crows have a soft underbelly and if we can limit the amount of easy ball guys like Jenkins and Betts like to get then it goes a long way to us winning.

  38. This argument falls in deaf ears, Ralph. There's posters on this forum who actually believe that the root cause of us being irrelevant for so long is because the fans don't "demand better". Collectively, we highly overrate our own influence on the club, even if some of us individually facepalm at the notion. Fans, members, supporters: get as carried away as you want! Dream of a 2017 flag and share it with your fellow Demons if you want. The only thing at stake is your own emotional wellbeing; you are welcome to gamble on that if you want.

  39. The ironic thing about the diving thing is that Vince did one of the lamest, most blatant stages I've ever seen, in a period of the game where there was actually something to gain by doing it, and I literally have not seen or heard it mentioned anywhere. I suppose nobody actually punched him in the face, so there's no actual crime we can blame him for. That's why I can understand the view of others who would like to see the club publicly back Oliver at some stage. His poor reputation is being allowed to snowball out of control, over stupid things, It's getting ridiculous.

  40. I still getting over not drafting Chris Grant 1988, I'll work my way up to being worried about Weideman when he's been playing for more than 18 months. Just out of curiosity, did you wait for Curnow to play a good match before writing this thread or is it something you've always believed? You draft players according to who you believe will be the better player over the course of their careers. The alternative is a team full of Rhys Palmer, Daniel Rich, Cale Morton, Mitch Robinson, Jordan Gysberts.

  41. Prudence should dictate that. Of course many of the 4th estate will try their little figs etc to get a rise get that headline etc. Again, as distasteful as it seems to me this club doesn't have the back of many of its charges. The MFC still strikes me ( unfortunately) as naive. You can still box clever whilst protecting the young.

  47. Lloyd, Hutchy and Cornes were surprisingly complimentary about our win, right until they threw us under the bus for "getting ahead of ourselves," complete with laughable 'rap sheet' detailing our indiscretions this year. They even included Hogan caught smoking at a music festival on the graphic. You'd think these soulless wankers might have an ounce of humanity for a kid with a gravely ill father, but clearly that's giving modern Australian journalism too much credit.

  49. I read the HUN today and thought Carlton had won. The whole article was about Curnow and little else. The media freaking love the Blues and I can't work out why. They are the kings of getting heaps of the footy and doing Jack with it, not to mention their game style being horrible to watch.
