Good afternoon. What to say. Clearly the club values him highly and after reading that article it seems that his heart and head are with helping us move up the ladder. It was quite impressive to be honest... Obviously my opinion is based on what I see on game day either at the ground or on the television and clearly as a supporter, you don't and can't know all. And clearly I don't. I'll back Garland and the club on the decision and hope he can recapture his 2013 form next year as we desperately need him playing consistently high level football. I don't back away from my criticism of certain aspects of his playing. There are many things I'd like to see gone from his game next year and plenty of things I'd like to see added. I'd love to see some aggression added to his game, greater endurance and will to run and for him to minimise his decision making errors. He's always been good as a one-on-one defender but I want to see that 2013 versatility come back into his game. Thank you for your commitment Colin, I look forward to a big pre-season of running followed by a consistent year of footy.26 points

I live locally and just happened to be meeting a mate at the tan today mid morning and walked by Goschs' and who do I see? Christian Petracca and Jack Viney jogging a lap, having a kick to kick and even practising ground ball gets. No taping or support on Petracca's knee. Three other guys down by the goals having shots for goal. 1 wearing an MFC singlet but I couldn't work out who he was. 1 quite clearly looked like Daniel McStay from the Lions, who's probably back in town and just having a kick. Likely mates with Petracca from Vic Metro days. Anyway, at one stage McStay (or the McStay like figure) turns from down near the goals on to his left and kicks a good distanced kick out to Petracca, who not content to mark it normally spins around and marks it with both hands behind his back.19 points

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-10-07/colin-garland-contract Show's that you can't read much into "body language" on field. After reading that I am ecstatic he has signed on. Exactly the type of person we need around the club as we build forward.17 points

Go read what he said about chasing success (or just read my signature). These are the kinds of players I want at my club, even if they aren't champion A graders. We all cry at night thinking of Hogan leaving, but if you don't extend a level of loyalty and support to your older players who have stuck it out, how can we expect young potential stars to do the same? Loyalty goes both ways. And just by the way, he is a good defender, very versatile in being able to play tall and small, and has been fairly consistent for many years. We could do a hell of a lot worse!14 points

It's time to thank all those who have contributed to Demonland during the past season and to all those who post here or simply visit and read without posting. We value your contributions and ongoing support - especially to Nasher who keeps us going on the technical side, to our moderators whose task is often thankless - especially so when we go through yet another season where the wins are outweighed by the losses. Special thanks to our regular contributors, Whispering Jack, George on The Outer, The Oracle, JVM, KC from Casey and all others who have contributed. Once again they have had to report on games and subjects that have been difficult to write about in 2015 because of our club's lack of on field success. We're all looking forward to a bigger and better season in 2016 and that the stories and news we bring you will be more uplifting and exciting than those gone by in recent times. We are always looking out for new contributors who have something to say about the mighty Demons. If you want to contribute an article feel free to contact me via PM. Cheers & thanks again. Was my favourite player. Still is my favourite player. I loved everything about him from his draft day. Just a natural footballer who could easily have been in the top echelon of mids within the AFL. Incredibly unlucky to have endured what he has since being drafted, but I'm holding hope that he'll make up some serious ground in the second half of his career. As long as he stays injury free over the summer and can complete a full pre-season, I expect him to make a return to our starting 22 next year. I think it's obvious to say that for the longevity of his career, he needs to be managed very carefully next year. Play him off the forward flank perhaps rotating with Petracca. Give him games off. Just make sure he has a consistent run at it. We shouldn't expect him to be firing. Just contributing. Next year should be a preparation year for 2017 and onwards really. When you spend this much time off your feet and with a very limited running base, you need more than one pre-season to be at the right level of conditioning. Speed, power, strength, endurance. He'll be behind in all of those areas even after this coming pre-season. I know I'm guilty at times of looking at scenarios with a 'glass half empty' perspective, but with Trengove and Petracca I'm refusing to be negative. They're such rare talents. Players who suffer injuries like these guys always have to face a more challenging road. But I'm standing strong in thinking times are changing for both the team and individuals. I'm looking at Dan Menzel and Robbie Gray as inspiration. And I hope Trengove and Petracca are too. I love Jack and I really hope we see his true value and talent as a player in the coming years. Fingers crossed at this stage.11 points

I cant help thinking about last year and all the mice and clock and Dangerfield talk. At the end of the day despite being " disappointed" we did end up recruiting both Brayshaw and Petracca with the picks that we may have given away. Petracca is of course an unknown but by all reports... Cant help but wonder how much Adelaide be regretting that now. Dangerfield is of course an out and out gun and Id love him at the club but at the expense of Brayshaw and Petracca? not sure. So, "big fish" while satisfying to catch dont always lead to the greater success. If we end up with pick 6 this year it may yet be a good thing.10 points

Really? Trengove does NOT lack aggression. It's competitive and therefore appropriate, just the kind you want and he has in spades.9 points

To all 'intensive' purposes, we are all in the same boat. But this 'all goes well' for the future. For a comprehensive list of malaprop, diehard Demon supporter, Greg Shalless' book of poetry, Tall Tales but True is a good read and it will leave everybody on 'tenderhooks'.9 points

Well, what we're talking about ... Gerard ... the top fifty ... the top fifty, Gerard, is ... it's ... when you've got a top fifty, you've ... the players. It's about the players. And there are fifty of them Gerard. You've got ... WE'VE got them. We've got them Gerard. And the players, they're our players ... when you, when you, when you, no. The fifty players. The fifty. Let's call them the fifty. And when you're a player, Gerard. When you're a player. It's – it's nothing. It’s not nothing. It's something. It's something to be a player. And when you're a player. You run out on to that ground. And you're think I'm a fifty. I'm a top fifty. No. They're not thinking that Gerard. They're ... have you ever seen ... have you ever— Gerard. Have you ever stopped. Stop. Have you ever been in a situation when you’re a player and you're kicking goals and you're getting handpasses and you're taking marks and you're ... and you're not thinking I’m a top fifty ... and goals. And the goals Gerard. The goals are ... they're goals. They’re just goals. But they're more than that. They are goals. They are goals Gerard. Are they thinking Gerard, are they thinking about a top fifty. Are they thinking about— they're thinking about getting a kick … and wives, Gerard. And girlfriends. There’s more to it than that Gerard. There’s more to it than kicks and handpasses. There's more to it than that. And the kicking and the running and the ... are they thinking Gerard about goals and, and have they ... have they .... do YOU think about that Gerard? Do you? Do you think about that Gerard? And the fifty. The fifty. What I'm talking about is the fifty. And the players, they ARE the fifty. They are the fifty. Some of them . Most of them. The fifty ... are they thinking .... Gerard, they run out there there every week. They do it every week. And the goals and the marks and the ... you, you, you, you, come in here and you talk about the players. Am I talking about the players? No. You talk about the players and I’m thinking, I’m thinking, is it about the players? Is it really ... about ... here's something else Gerard. The players ... the teams, Gerard. The top teams ... they are the top teams. They are the top teams. The top teams ... they're clubs Gerard. They’re clubs. They kick goals. They are out there and the goals and they kick goals, and these fifty. These fifty players. They are the fifty. Let’s the call them the fifty. Are they ... you can talk about all these teams and all these players and you can’t tell me that they are teams who are teams of players and they the players ... the fifty. The teams and the players and all the goals and handpasses … are they the fifty? Are they the fifty Gerard? You ask me. You ask me and I’ll tell you. The fifty. I’ll tell you. Are they the fifty? Are they? ........ I don't know.8 points

I'm probably just spit-balling a little but, I have the feeling that if Trengove manages to get back to playing seniors next year, it will mean so much more to the playing group apart from having another very good midfielder available. A Trengove comeback will help galvanise the group and help instill the belief that serious injury does not mean career over, but instead proves that obstacles such as these are part and parcel of your time as a footballer - this is how you deal with them! Trenners playing footy next year in any capacity will be extremely pleasing to say the least.7 points

One of the reasons his committment and his quotes mean so much to me - as a supporter - is that it shows that our playing list is turning the corner. Despite the hell we've been through, the players who are still with us are players who want to turn it around, who love the club and want the success. With all due respect to Frawley, who suffered as a defender in a poor team, he got out of there when he could. That sort of attitude would have hung around like a miasma, the idea that "I need to chase success elsewhere" as opposed to the drive to achieve success at Melbourne. As we look to improve players number 15-30 on our list through trades this year (Melksham, Kennedy, et al) we will become more competitive as we will run a bit deeper, and that drive will build towards success. This sort of commitment from a senior player is a big thing for Melbourne. Potentially an external turning point for the club.6 points

I've always enjoyed watching Bugg since his debut season. When he's not niggling and getting under his oponents skin causing them to fault, he can use the ball beautifully out of the half back line. He's not that high end player we are hoping for but he'll certainly create competition for that Grimes/ Howe half back role - yet with more shut down ability.6 points

Ridiculous call about Jetta's disposal. He is very tidy with the ball, one of the few I have faith in that he will hit a target regularly.6 points

I still find it amazing that he's Gerard Whately's side-kick on AFL 360. Arguably the best commentator/television host coupled with a bloke who knows very little about the game and translates that fact so well.5 points

Had a phone call last night from my nephew, with a story about Jesse being on the [censored] with his mates over in Perth. (He works with the mates father). I asked him to send the story to me so I could post it here, but seems he was too lazy. Gist was, Jesse was on the pizz, and making a "lad" of himself, as teenagers do when the are away with mates. In the fun, a folding chair found itself broken, and the finger was pointed at Hogan, who laughed, and told his mates that he could probably afford to replace it with a new one. "ya reckon im on peanuts do ya? haha" Jesse was very happy with life, and in particular, life at the Dees. If the nephew bothers to send me the story, I will post, providing there is nothing bad in it. He hears heaps about Hogan, from this bloke. faulty Thought I should post something about Jesse, as we seem to be getting off topic.5 points

Col Garland quote from today “I told my manager I didn’t want to speak to any other club, but it’s funny after seeing one of my great mates [James Frawley] win a premiership on the weekend, because you have to be envious of success,” he said. “I was watching the game and people said ‘wouldn’t you love success?’ and I said ‘it wouldn’t mean anything to me unless it was with Melbourne’.5 points

People, it's time to remember the humble hyphen. We don't want to lose any Demonlanders during the off-season to unnecessary heart attacks just because someone forgets that there's a huge difference between "resign" and "re-sign".5 points

Thread has been pruned to remove the juvenile innuendo posted about some of our female players. It's a shame that these types of schoolboy antics still exist at a time when the women's game, and particularly the MFC's prominent role in developing it, is really kicking goals. For those of you who think it's all harmless fun and political correctness gone mad, imagine it's your daughter or sister whose picture was being drooled over, and see how that stacks up for you.5 points

Well said. Despite being on the extreme other end of opinions on this, his re-signing doesn't make you wrong or us right - we're all just mugs on the outer, forming our own opinions, influenced by our own biases and seeing an incomplete picture. That's what makes forums fun. Needless to say, I'm really pleased for Col and glad the club has backed him. Loved that quote.4 points

In 2011 Trengove averaged 20 possessions per game, kicked 13 goals and had a rating of 89.7. That rating would have placed him third this year. He was in his second year. He played all of that year as a teenager. He was injury free.4 points

Given Port's apparent interest in Toumpas, I suspect that, like virtually every other club in the comp, they would've picked Toumpas over Wines. Some people here seem to forget that Toumpas was universally rated as a top end draft pick with big upside. At the time ...4 points
