  1. I was also Team Manager under Coach Carl Ditterich in 1979, as well as Legal adviser to the staff and players for many years. Also dabbled in recruiting many years ago, before the draft existed and started the club's first members magazine, Demon's World. The first player interviewed was either the great Robbie or the current MCC President Steven Smith. Happy to share some stories if they don't bore people and don't get me in too much trouble. Actually I will share one now. In 1979, as I said, I was Team Manager and we were playing at the old South Melbourne Lakeside ground. Phil Carman approached me in the rooms and said he had a bad case of the runs and didn't think he could play. He was of course very concerned and didn't know what to do. I grabbed the Doctor who gave him either an injection or a tablet, just before the game and he played. At each break he would leave the ground and hit the WC. By game's end thankfully he was feeling better. BTW, he kicked 5 goals and was our best player.

  2. Missing in action, Frost, Petracca, Kent, Trengove. Viney did rehab, spoke to Dave Misson probably another week. Had a good chat to Nev Jetta, another week at least, in the hands of the doctors, he did the full session, had to wear the orange vest (no tackling), but being Nev wore it as a neck scarf. Dawes trained strongly, said he was right to go. McCartney said "poor pressure, selfish footy, Fremantle players allowed to do as they pleased" as he walked past me, obviously from the review. The drills were again about stoppages and ball movement, again with more and less defenders. Both Pedersen and Dawes joined in the ruck work with Stafford today. Spoke to Jack Fitzpatrick, embracing the role as a FB, enjoying it, still feels the urge to go on the lead now and again, said he still has long way to go and has lots to still learn. ANB again pulled up really well from his first senior VFL game, looking forward to the weekend to improve on last week. No signs whatsoever of breaking into any recognisable team during the drills, all mixed up, and when they broke into forward/mids/defence at the end, no surprises, everyone where they should be.....(McKenzie again with the backs). Any questions feel free. Got a great picture which will be on Twitter of a new angle on the Jones/Brayshaw goal kicking comp, will be on Twitter Demonpk

  3. Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but probably deserves its own thread... http://www.afl.com.au/video/2015-05-06/the-melbourne-mummy-boys We whinge about the things that the club "gets wrong", but the Breast Cancer Network initiative is certainly one thing that we should all be proud of our club for getting behind. I know a number of females who have gone to the "pink" game and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and they aren't Melbourne supporters! This clip just highlights the importance of ensuring the awareness of breast cancer remains at the forefront of our minds. Especially for those that are fortunate enough to still have the most important female in their lives around - our mums.

  5. He isn't up to scratch, but really calling an AFL listed player a 'dud' is most offensive and shows no respect for the enormous amount of hard work he has put in over the years.

  6. What probably would have been the greatest, was having Wayne "the Dominator" Johnston sitting outside the G in the car with WJ, while I was inside the MFC offices trying to convince our General Manager, to recruit him. He agreed to take him, but the deal fell over when Carlton asked for Tom Flower as a trade. Tom had kicked 5 goals in the last game the year before and he was of course Robbie's brother. It was of course dismissed out of hand. Wayne at that stage had not played a game for Carlton, was rejected twice by them and was a Prahran player. Typical of the scum to seek a fair player for a rejected player who wasn't even on their list. It clearly worked out well for them. I was also heavily into Jimmy Buckley early in his career and we again couldn't get the deal over the line. Graham Yeats would be my biggest success, bringing him over from Prahran under 19's after a tip from his Coach, a mate of mine. John Dellamarta and the late Wayne "Flash" Gordon were among a few other players I helped bring to the club.

  7. My mum has breast cancer and hail, rain or storm would not stop me from attending this match. I was on the ground for the Pink Lady game last year (I think it was 2014) with 1000's of other men and woman. I got tapped on the shoulder by a lady who I grew up with and went to kindergarten and primary school with. I have not seen her since I was about 15. She does not follow Melbourne but attends this game every year as she was diagnosed with breast cancer in her late 20's. Its a small world and I am amazed how this disease , despite how terrible it is, brings people together regardless of whom they support.

  10. This could be the worst thread in Demonland history. Points so far have included that Garry Lyon can get stuffed because he thinks Hawthorn (the best team of the past 3 years) will comfortably beat us (the worst team of the last 3 years) and that only tipping us once in recent history (which is factually incorrect) means he isn't loyal. Do these people actually believe what they've written, or have I fallen for a prank? The bloke is Melbourne through and through. Show some respect.

  11. The ins show us that we are interested in making the team faster in the longer term. Fremantle won clearances with their size, and scored against us (early on when we were in the contest) with their speed. We are addressing the size, but we are also trying to improve the speed. Bringing in Stretch as early as they have is obviously because the players we have been playing have not been playing that hard running outside role well enough. Spencer comes in because you simply can't leave him out. If you want to promote people who are knocking on the door, then Spencer has knocked on the door, smashed it down and fashioned the splinters into a spear with which to impale Jamar. Big, strong, aggressive and applies excellent pressure all over the ground.

  12. Upon reflection, bringing in McKenzie and playing him as a sub is probably the worst/most baffling thing Roos has done since he got here.

  14. Great clip. How good is Meg Viney? Married Todd, produced Jack and looked after Jesse. A few years ago I was lucky enough to be on the ground making up the 'pink lady' and it was a really moving experience - strangers crying together, hugging each other, comforting one another and sharing their stories. Plenty of smiles and laughter, too.

  15. My mum had breast cancer when I was in high school. I remember going with her to when she got her radiation therapy at Peter Mac. I'd read books in the waiting room only half paying attention, mind meandering around with other thoughts. The staff there were fantastic and supportive. So glad the club gets behind this cause in a big way. As if I couldn't love them any more. Go dees :D

  16. I have to ask, 'what is the downside to football and the AFL if Eddie quits'? Is he one of the games greats? does he bring enormous amounts of money into the game? would anyone but Eddie care if he quit? what is he going to quit from? the Collingwood presidency? is he going to move all his interests out of AFL? where does his income come from? It seems to me that Eddie has done pretty well out of footy and he has more to lose...so off you go Eddie.

  17. Eddie wouldn't and Eddie is lambasted by all and sundry on a regular basis for being too conflicted. His calling of Collingwood games has been ridiculed because of his blatant bias. I like Eddie ( i think i might be one of the few) because of his passion for his club - but he is a standing joke on his televised views on anything that touches on Collingwood. I believe GL has passion for Melbourne but tries his darndest not to be "Eddie" on the TV when it comes to his views.

I must say I do get a loyal vibe from Jesse. I dont get any of the feelings from him that I did from Scully or Frawley or the like. Greg Denham also takes the opportunity to lay the boots into Chris Connolly in that article - might be some bad blood between them?

  19. Neitz is still criminally underrated by the wider footballing community. 300 games, 600 goals, AA at both FF and CHB... the list goes on. Neitz was an absolute gem and a beast in his prime. Always felt the players walked taller when he was in form.

  20. Seems to me that Roos is all about impacting the game in some way. Jamar - Surprised that he was dropped, but Spencer was BOG for mine at Casey last week, and he and Jamar can't play in the same team. Grimes - Anyone who thought that he played well against Freo are kidding themselves. For starters, it's a 2 way game, and he provided nothing offensively, and didn't play on Ballantyne for most of the game, as many are suggesting. Michie - If you didn't look at the stats, you hardly notice him because he rarely hurts the opposition when he has the ball. He's also slow across the ground. Riley doesn't offer much more than Michie, which is why he wasn't selected. McKenzie - Possible the most mind boggling selection in years. Toumpas - His 1st half against the Bombers last week was the most impressive display I've seen from him. Every disposal was spot on, and for the first time, he actually seemed to know what he wanted to do with the ball before he got it. Not sure why he went missing in the 2nd half. Stretch - Probably start as sub, but he has a quick burst of speed that will hopefully allow our inside mids an outlet at clearances.

  22. Reckon Viv is stiff. 17 touches at DE of 88% (best). The most disposals 21. Ran with Fyfe for two quarters and whilst beaten provided contest. Certainly was not the worst out there last week by a long shot. His game the week before was exceptional. Think giving a bloke 2 games, one against the best in the competition is pretty poor.

  23. Some career enders in that selection. Jamar did try hard last week but if Spencer does the business I reckon he's done. Why? Spencer is bigger. He is an excellent tackler. His marking and kicking ability is at least equal to Jamar's. He has developed some serious mongrel and therefore will cause some opposition players a nasty moment. Sorry for Grimes. Must be curtains for McKenzie. Good luck to Stretch - a bit premature for mine. Jack - You better play a [censored] good one!!

  24. I've watched a few quarters of Casey through the internet feeds this year and I must say Spencer has looked very good. I have always thought that VFL is his level though. Michie - 0 tackles and uncompetitive against Freo. Maybe a bit stiff, but can see the logic. Toumpas back after a quiet game in the VFL is a surprise. Stretch looks really classy from what I've seen. He will almost certainly be the sub. If you had said that we would make 4 unforced changes this week and Watts wouldn't be one of them. I'd have laughed at you.

  30. Wow. It's rare that Roosy wields the axe to this extent ....... he clearly won't tolerate what he saw against Freo, and you'd reckon a few others might be on thin ice. Dawes was an automatic inclusion and now is the time for Spence and Toump to prove their credentials for the future. Billy the Kid is being given a taste. The message is there that everyone needs to play out of their skin to retain their spot from week to week. The climate is changing and I love it.

  36. I never realised the real difference between AFL footballers and us mere mortals, until one day at training on the G, Henry Coles, a 170 cm ( if he was in high heels ) rover, said he would show me a few things. We stood together at one end and an injured player at the other end about 35-40 metres away was kicking the ball to us. I am 175cms and a former hack footballer, but was only about 26 at the time and thought I could get the odd possession against Henry. What came next absolutely stunned me and demonstrated just how good these guys are. No matter where I stood, in front, to the side, behind or simply leading to the kicker, Henry got the ball and stopped me even touching it. He used his body and smarts to move me out of position, or just get around me or simply beat me to the pill. I just couldn't get near it.I was exhausted and felt like his [censored],as he monstered me. At the end I shook his hand and told him that I would never doubt the ability needed to play AFL. BTW Henry could also hand them out in games when needed. He was old school tough as nails, but a nice bloke.

  40. Another thing to remember is the investment we have made in Jesse is something he's really understanding and respecful of, we gave up picks 3 and 13 for him, flew him back to perth every time he needed to go home, Roosy has visited his family to explain the direction of the club and how much we love having Jesse, we have signed him on an extension well before his contract expired for him to make, and i'm not certain of the figures exactly but next year he's on above 500k per year for a kid who at that stage hadn't played a game. we have put total faith in this kid and Jesse wants to repay that.

  41. I thought it was interesting that Freo had 12 players who played last Sunday that also played in 2011 when we beat them by 89 points. Just goes to show that if you can build around that core group you can turn it around relatively quickly.

  45. Im pretty sure it was in the second quarter, but I saw Watts actively lead hard at the ball and attack the contest. Sure, it was just one time, but the way everyone works, is if Watts did one soft thing, they'd be all over it. I don't really care for anyone saying 'he's supposed to, It's SHOULD be what forwards do' or anything like that. Watts is a great ball user, our team simply cannot utilize him effectively at the moment. He's being asked to fill holes, he is taking up the challenge, he might not be the best player out there, or he might be, until he is settled in one spot for 2-3 years we wont know that. The fact he has stuck around the club deserves respect. Every player and their dog were up and leaving, but he stayed. Roos is doing the best with Jack, but does not have the luxury to settle him in one position at the moment, simple as that. I personally admire him, playing 100 games (I wonder how many of those were wins? or even close games for that matter?) for our club, re-signs when everyone expected him to go, and he is boo'd in his 100th? That was so far beyond disrespectful toward Jack, that it is not even funny. Booing any player is unacceptable. We as a club, a community and as a footballing family need to be better than this. I never saw Hawkins being boo'd, and that's the culture of the Geelong fans, supportive. How are we going to build a club that is successful and a tight-knit group with antics like these from fans? Its football and there is passion, I understand that, but there is also a line that needs to be drawn. I doubt Jack would walk into your office, call your paperwork sloppy and call for you to be fire/ replaced by a trash can.

  46. Just getting really tired of this mug.. Watched a little clip of Barret and the hairy one discussing the acts of thuggery displayed by Hodge and Lewis on the weekend, Hairy Garry said they should miss 3, "they have GWS and Melbourne coming up, so it won't hurt them too much". Now it might be true, but how about some support you ungrateful piece of crap! Sick of it! Without the MFC you would be nothing! Poor Jimma had to just about twist your arm to help us when he was on his death bed, not to mention your unwillingness to deter from your self centred view on life, and how you only want to focus on your media career. You are a selfish, unappreciative, spoilt snipper, and it hurts, because you used to be my hero. GFY GARRY!!
