I can't possibly imagine Roos won't coach us now. He's a smart guy and knows full well the implication of his comments. No doubt there are things to tick off, but I suspect it's virtually a done deal. We can't underestimate the significance of a Roos signing. It will be one of the biggest appointments in this club's 155 year history.17 points

Whisper is that Cameron Ling as an assistant is part of the package.17 points

These developments are entirely consistent with what I have been saying for 3+ Months. Melbourne has been in discussions with Roos since R2. Melbourne in confident Roos will coach from 2014. No decision will be made until admin, board etc are in place. No decision will be made until after AFL assistance is confirmed. The AFL wants Roos to coach Melbourne None of this should be a surprise! Roos is very short odds to coach us. I say $1.20 would be a fair market.13 points

As I read this thread, I literally have a tear in my eye. It feels like my soul is finally returning to my body, which has been ripped apart by this bloody club for too long. Where there was darkness, there is now light - so much light, I feel like we're 10 metres away from the bloody sun. I can't believe this is happening. I am just so bloody pumped. Thank you PJ. The first pint of scotch will be in your honour!12 points

If we land Roos, I hereby undertake to drain an entire bottle of Scotch in three minutes. Right down to my belly. I will then probably die, which would be a bit disappointing (for me at least), because I've been waiting for a very long time for the MFC dynasty to commence. But I think, on balance, it,ll be worth it.11 points

Feel sorry for Brent. He was treated like dirt by Neeld - one of many, many players that hated his guts.9 points

Can we maybe not have a go at Jack for potentially wanting to leave? I'd be sad to see him go too, but there's no way I'd blame him either. And I'm of the view point that he wants a reason to stay, not a reason to leave. If Paul Roos is what keeps him here, rubbing it in his face isn't the way I'd go about it. He had every right to see what his options were.9 points

for those that missed it; conversation went as follows ; as i have no life; eddie; roos; dunstall ;m.mclure talking issues ie; stadium avail. daisy thomas.etc; eddie; "3 cheers for roosy he's staying at fox footy by the sounds of things ( roos smiles with embarrassment ) u've knocked the brisbane lions back & ralphy youv'e got some info before we get the mail from roosy.. ralphy; states we have- we dont know if daisy thomas will stay BUT rodney eade will stay he's basically put his coaching ambitions on hold forever because he will be the full time football manager @ coll.which is a very prestigious position. he interviewed very well @ melb ? & brisbane were keen as well. & now roosy informed angus johnson due to FAMILY reasons , he would be unable to RELOCATE to brisbane & was therefore ruled out as a candidate.( end quote ) then ralphy, talking to roos saying melb.still think u r very keen or that u r NOT totally ,categorically ruled out roosy , whats going on have u not told them enough times ????.. ROOS; " well i think part of the process is & when i spoke to angus @ brisb. u start to think about things, what they look like from a FAMILY point of view; moving back 10 or 12 weeks ago there was certainly NO CHANCE. i spoke to angus last week i simply can't MOVE to brisbane. UMM in terms of the melb. job- ahh uh u know look there is some MORE interest than what there was 12 weeks ago. will that happen ? ah as ive said to you ralphy as i've said to a number of people, if it does i'll let u know as soon as i know . ("OOH- OOH" NOISES FROM DUNSTALL & EDDIE !@!!! ) ralphy;; would u be happy to be interviewed given that there is a level of interest.. roos; look i've had some discussions with peter & peter has been really honest with me, umm & I HAVE SAID TO HIM U HAVE TO WORK TO YOUR TIME LINE NOT MY TIME LINE, ,, umm & im certainly open like ive always said if he calls me i am always happy to take his call.. dunstall; " ed-this is a significant shift we have just heard paul roos say there is MORE interest NOW on my perspective.. (roos- nodding in agreement.) all of sudden its becoming something thats more realistic" ROOS; well i think yea its difficult when you r sort of talking in a public forum, when i've said u've got to u can't just flick the switch we know -to be a senior coach u have to want to do it u have to be 100 % involved init. so dunstall interjects " looks like u have screwed a new bulb in though. roos; well along the process u start to think what does it look like what effect does it impact on the FAMILY so clearly from 12 weeks ago u start to think about it & u got to make a decision at some point , i've made that clear to melb.that they can't wait to see what i'm doing they have got to work to their own time frame , but i am certainly open as i have always said to talk to people about it.. mclure chips in with a grim-i think it gives some message to melbourne that there's some hpe there that they may get you. roos then laughs "ha ha ha " eddie; " this is the biggest thing that has happened to melb ( mclure chips in with FOREVER- & DUNSTALL LAUGHS ) SINCE-since john beckwith hit the boundary line I THINK mcclure- "since ah since barassi left" in 66. eddie; so roosy " just again" , roll record everyone @ every news station across the country- just for clarification so there's no ducks & drakes & things- what is your position as far as melb. is concerned? they need to come to you now & put an offer? ROOS; i have had some dialogue with peter & he's continued to talk to me um i've said to em along the process is really difficult when u r asked all the time & i can only answer the question & ive said that a number of times, i'll answer the question when u ask me.& when i started the process 12 weeks ago u can't go fro 0% to 100 % in such a short space of time. there's more INTEREST NOW & i've tried to be as honest as i possibly can be, i'm certainly not & the point now that i can say i will be but certainly start thinking about it u start picturing yourself doing it, what does it look like & all those things,- so where am i at is it 50- 50 ??or whatever , its probably moved from 0 % to around that 50- 50 but at some point u have got to then decide to dip the the toe in the water you have got to be serious about it u have got to be fair dinkum .. mcclure; have u got your phone on ?? ( laughing ) dunstall; i tell u wont hear any more from ralphy anymore tonight he will be busy writing the back page story. (laughing all together ) eddie; one last one you have been really good roosy a couple of weeks ago you told us family situations probably expell u from the process of the brisb lions can i just ask u on the back of that as we just saw angus johnson. your family situation allow u to come to melbourne easier than brisbane ??? roos; just to clarify we have discussed the move from a family point of view & it was not going to work & angus knows the reason for that.. melbourne is an option in terms of melbourne the state in moving, so.does that mean i am going to coach the melb. F.C. "NO" but one of the things u do do when u r going through the process & u think about it logically & work out what's achievable. obviously my family is what's important for me at the moment far above coaching or anything else i do so is melb more of an option yes- brisb is not from a family point of view.? eddie; so melb could be an option if things came to together. roos; yea certainly absolutely.. eddie ; there u go i dont think we could ask anymore honesty from p roos tonight to say that.. dunstall; ( whistling ) eddie; i think they have sung "the grand ole flag once" this year melb all ove raustralia melb fans r singing it as we speak i reckon. ralphy, what more have u got it doesn't matter i think we have got the front & back page lead here tonight. ralphy: all of a sudden the dark clouds have parted @ melb. eddie; the mail from sportsbet is that roos has been wound into a $1.40 ( roos laughing ) with the afl now funding melb. really they have got to back the truck up & get roos. roos; u do have to be committed to it its - money is the result of actually doing but u cant just do it for money, we have seen that in the past u have to get your mind across actually doing it. mcclure; i think we r all glad that u r thinking about it.-thats seriously is the point.( roos nods ) going to the war room . king & lynch;; wer all boring but- mike sheahan is up and about singing the theme song.8 points

I personally would be happy as I have always liked Jack, spoken to him many times and believe he has more skill and talent than nearly every other player on our list.He needs a new coach to help him develop physically and mentally, to harden up and to become desperate in every contest. Add 10 kilos to his frame and a good coach and he could be anything.7 points

How about this for a pebble: getting Roos guarantees nothing. We still don't have a midfield and established leaders.7 points

I really don't see how this news can be considered anything other than positive. Whilst it is only one part of a larger puzzle, to me it's one of the largest pieces, and one off which most others can fall into place. Roos' signature may attract FAs or uncontracted players. He may help bring us quality assistant coaches. His influence on the current list will be felt immediately. We will also have the benefit for once of time - Roos having the runs on the board means we're not all going to jump up and call for him to be sacked if/when we open 2014 with losses. Stability - through Roos, Bartlett, PJ and other important acquisitions (GMFO, for example), will help this club to no end.6 points

Don't get excited. Don't get excited. This is Melbourne, they could still bring Neeld back. Anything bad can and will happen. Don't get excited. Ah stuff it, it's PARTY TIME! Best possible nearly birthday present ever.6 points

Consistent with GNF's comments above, a few weeks ago I was speaking to a Dees fans who has the inside scoop and a North fan who knows Demitriou (and who had lunch with him one week prior to our chat). They said to me that Roos is almost a certainty to coach us next year. They said the AFL is going to make it happen, and when they set their sights on something, they make it happen. I didn't believe them at the time. In some respects, I still don't. But his 50/50 comments last night are starting to change my view. It's a game changer if we land Roos. If we do, I'll go back to hating GWS.6 points

Last round in season '87' Footscray Vs Melbourne Footscray 10.8 (68) Melbourne 12.11 (83) Western Oval 31,249 29 August 1987 26 years ago almost to the day Balmy Spring weather , near record crowd and I witnessed one of the greatest wins in the History of the MFC Some recollections Gary Lyon breaking leg early Brett Lovett, playing a sensational game Earl Spalding, marking everything that came his way at CHB Graeme Yeats, controlling the wing Danny Hughes, the Trojan up back Brett Bailey, typical workmanlike performance Jim Stynes , winning the ruck Brian Wilson, one of the architects of this great win. Ricky Jackson, Lively as always Warren Dean. ah what could have been, a rare talent Sean Wight, Brilliant game in defense! David Williams "Has marked left wing , Right Wing and left Wing in a matter of minutes "Tim Lane" Robert Flower, Held well early, then cutting lose and kicking three "Brilliant Goals" to win us the game! Including a freak mark in the last Q The rooms afterwards were "Electric' and not to mention the after match which was sensational! Just for melancholy I will put the second half replay CH2 Replay ( which I still have, on for Fathers' day and Bask in the glory I still feel to this day to have been, a very proud Demon Supporter! "Now Stuie, because I have a serious "man crush" on you I'll thicken the plot further. Two weeks ago I was told by a 40 year member of the MFC that Roos as coach was a "done deal''. The source is a sensible level headed bloke who has been reliable in the past. Make of it what you will but, for the moment, just keep it between us." The above quote is post 2739 on the Paul Roos ... thread. You continually disappoint me Stuie. I have taken you under my wing (despite Biffen's naysaying) and tried to educate and improve you. You must simply try harder or I shall be forced to abandon you.5 points

Not sure about the amount of wins, but heres some things that will DEFINITELY improve by a LOT - Percentage / competitiveness - Culture - Player comfidence - Player development - Sponsorship $$$ - Membership total - Positive press Wins will improve too, but i dont want to guess as the skys the limit. Can promise you it will be a hell of a lot more then the last 2 seasons combined.5 points

I am desperately looking forward to the day Roos signs and the first open training, i just wanna be there when Roos says to Jack Watts and a few other boys.. " this is how hard you need to work at AFL level, anything else is unacceptable"" Make no mistake Roos will improve this list 20% just on the increased workrate alone, might see alot of players in a totally different light next year i am tipping a massive breakout year from Jack Trengove, Roos clearly believes in him, he seems to be finding confidence and a full pre season and the belief of a good coach might really help him.5 points

Indeed. While it will be a wonderful appointment, it only gets us to Camp 1 on Everest. Most of the climb to the summit, and the hardest bit, is still to come. But at least we will have disposed of the team that couldn't even negotiate the icefall at the bottom.5 points

Our beloved Greg Denham thinks it's all wrapped up: "Melbourne, which plays its final game for the season tomorrow against the Western Bulldogs, is working towards announcing Roos at Thursday night's best-and-fairest award function ... ... The Australian understands Roos has a package of former and present Sydney associates ready to head to the Demons, including highly respected assistant coach George Stone, who will head up a new Melbourne development program, which is a priority for the club. As well, premiership defender Tadhg Kennelly is expected to join Roos as an assistant coach. Roos' current contract with Fox Footy expires at the end of the current season." He has announced it tonight on the eve of our last game-makes sense Nathan Jones said last night the new coach will be announced in the next 2 weeks-makes sense Leigh Tudor is moving back to Melbourne at the end of the year,he will be Roos' senior assistant-makes sense. Rocket Eade re-signs with the Pies after most probably being told by PJ that he wasn't successful-makes sense. This can't not happen with all of the above, the wait is over. Geoff Walsh will be Footy Ops Manager. Done Deal PJ has just pulled off the almost impossible,WOOHOO!!!4 points

We have contacts to get them into whatever they want... Like DemonOx said - why bother with all the 50/50 talk if he isn't moving towards coaching again. I am not convinced he is signed but I am convinced that PJ has been quiet because he has wanted to keep twisting Roos' arm. Those celebrating are being a bit premature though...4 points

David Rodan was brought into the club for a specific purpose and at a low cost and whatever one might have thought about the idea behind that, he worked his butt off both on and off the field for the good of the club. In his last AFL game, he picked up seven disposals in less than a quarter and the momentum swung against us only after he was taken off. He was on his way to a really big number game and I'm sure would have stuck around to support the kids at Casey in the finals. I know this won't resonate with some around here but he was a terrific clubman and my 7 year old grandson who is overseas at the moment absolutely loved him for the way he treated the kids as individuals during the clinic the club conducted over the school holidays. He'll be devastated to learn that David's career was ended by yet another knee injury. Well played DR.3 points

Look, I agree that it's hard to argue that we got amazing value out of Rodan, but this is not the time or place to pan the bloke or carry on about poor recruitment. The guy went in to battle for us and got hurt doing so, to the point where his career is over. Show some respect.3 points
