Not satisfactory, but not really surprising in the circumstances KC. Maybe CC should step into the breach in an interim capacity. This could happen without disrupting Melbourne's established coaching arrangements.4 points

I just got back from ordering a pizza and saw a 2010 CFC magazine with a 3 page article on Mark Neeld. It was an interesting read that went through his playing career and coaching career (to that point) The main point that I picked up from this article was Mark talking about wanting to coach the hardest team to play against when coaching Ocean Grove. I must admit when I heard this when Neeld was appointed last year, I thought him to be making a stupid statement that seemed a little egotistical. It seems that this is a mantra to his coaching philosophy. He also spoke about working with the locals at Ocean Grove and that to implement his 'hardest to play against' mantra, he knew he had to build strong relationships with his players, who were mostly tradies. He went on to say they had a very good work ethic that he tapped into. Other points of this article were, He saw himself as wanting to coach at the begining of his career. Malcolm Blight gave out notes and information sheets to all his players at Geelong and told his players if they ever wanted to coach, to keep these sheets as a resource. Mark kept them all and was using them as a tool when coaching at all levels. He talks about coaching a defensive game plan when at the Jets, school coaching and Ocean Grove. He had the opportunity to go to the Western Bulldogs or Collingwood, but when he was interviewed by Malthouse. He stated they had very similar ideas and ended up coaching at the Pies. It was a very good read and this article has given me more faith in the direction Neeld is taking the club. It seems that his philospohy has not changed throughout his career. He is a successful coach at other levels and as an Assistant Coach. I believe a little more since reading the mag. On the way home my hands felt dirty from reading the Magpie mag, so i thoroughly washed them when i got home. If your asking why read the mag? It was a choice between Womens Day. A no brainer and as I said the article was very good3 points

You're entitled to your opinion here. You need to take into account the important aspects I've previously mentioned regarding "net" benefit, which is what the FD and list management is all about and has been their focus this trade draft period. TH has explained it well. The above four may play anywhere between 12-20 games for their respective clubs plus a final or two, but you need to weigh that up against what they have achieved for us (in the past) and what our list has achieved individually and collectively ahead. It won't be conclusive after one season either.3 points

Hi Guys & Girls, As a life long dees fan who lives abroad, I've only just stumbled across this wonderful website. I've spent some time reading a few of the topics and thought this might be a good thread to start on. I think the club is doing a great job at keeping everyone informed and it's good to see they have moved with the times and are using the whole social media thing to engage with the supporters. Years gone by there has been the odd update on the website and the occasional article in the online papers, but nothing like I'm seeing now. It's fantasic and I don't feel like I'm missing out on as much now. So I look forward to more updates, and thank all the people on here in advance for the all training reports and the odd bit of banter! P.S I don't think the wife will be too impressed with me finding this site, the computer might be getting a little more attention from now on.....3 points

Good news Demonlanders: On Dec 14, 2011 the MFC Website updated it's tally that day and had 20,100 members On Dec 14, 2012 (today) the MFC website updated today the tally of 20,145 members. * Gone past 20,000 a fraction earlier than last year. * Seem to have made up lost ground from comparisons from last year a week ago.3 points

I would also add to what I said above that some other clubs are in a position to take a punt on project players. Bennell and Morton have some serious competition in the WC side, if they break their way in thats great for WC, if they don't its actually no great loss, they have a strong list that has played finals two years in a row, they have time to let players like Morton and Bennell give it a crack. Our club does not have the luxury of picking up project players, we have enough of them as it is, what we need is consistant contributors where we know what we are getting. We hit rock bottom this year and everyone at the club knows we must improve, for the good of the players, we need to start contesting games to the final minutes and winning. If we keep waiting for potential players to develop whilst performing like we have the last 6 years, we may forget how to win entirely!3 points

A bloke who has hardly played a game in defence for the last 2 years and is now 30 going on 31. Champion data reckon they use stats for the last 2 seasons, Lake was a non event in 2011 and played a lot forward in 2012 a bit like Jared. If you got the 2009 - 2010 version then they would be looking better but hardly number 2.2 points

Bet it doesn't take into effect the nett effect of each line's infuence on each other ie a poor midfield will render a forward line and back line considerably worse etc.2 points

As Norm Smith would say, it is more important how you play as a team than individually. The individual must sacrifice his game (and development) to the betterment of the team as a whole I think Neeld is more interested in this. The whole is greater than its components How discarded individuals may perform individually at their new clubs is irrelevant to the success of Neeld's building of a "team" The only valid measurement is how successfully he builds his team with the cattle he has now had the opportunity to demand That's what I will be looking to judge at the end of next year P.S. I heartily agree with the depth and type of cuts he has made. I like the look of the replacements but it is still early days2 points

Why would Neeld be a genius if none of them 'make it?' (Devil's advocate) I find this criteria a little bewildering. If Martin and Moloney are regular players and the Lions make the finals and Morton and Bennell play finals for West Coast - which could be more than likely to occur, does this mean Neeld is a clutz (4 'make it')and should be held to account? I don't think so, for reasons I've previously mentioned.2 points

So why is Nick Maxwell a premiership captain and Dayne Swan not in the leadership group. Will you see Alex Fasolo in the Collingwood leadership group anytime soon, he's one of Collingwoods brightest young talent, what about future star talent Dayle Garlett? Clear as day Watts was dropped last year and then after an injury played poorly both in form and spirit in the last rounds of the year. He's part of the future of the club but he isn't "the future". If he was pick 80 and played a few average years as a forward with some class then moved behind the ball and barely set the world on fire you wouldn't dare suggest him for the leadership group. Why does the number have to be 7? Is that law? We are still short on genuine leadership and the best leaders are respected players. I agree Macdonald is only depth but even if he is playing most of the year at Casey why can't he be in the leadership group? He plays hard footy, trains hard and is respected. Isn't that setting an example for the other players. Neeld went for a young leadership group but he picked guys who were ready. Watts is a long way from ready to lead other players.2 points

There seems to be a view that Neeld is recruiting for the now and that there's a theme with the "type". To an extent that's true, but it doesn't paint the whole picture. There's definitely a character assessment that needs to be ticked and he likes contested ball winners, but he also chose Hogan for the future and addressed our need for outside pace by bringing in Barry. Viney and Toumpas picked them selves - and both have pace, Kent is hard at it with pace, Jones and Terlich are also mooted to have pace in their armoury. I like the balance. They've brought in good characters, some with experience, and players that have pace and put their head over the ball. And most have good endurance. I think they'd be pleased with their gains during this period.2 points

More a 'what' than a 'who' Would like to see the whole team display a 'Never say die' attitude in every game . A 'Never give in' stance doesn't take skill or any god given talent . It's a mindset which all our players can display . The players have got to want to be successful and a hatred of losing should be shared right across the board . If we do that, there will be plenty of excitement .2 points

I know, I know, it is all well and good to quote an unnamed source, but I have been told with some authority, that the word is the MFC will be told it has no case to answer. The reason it is taking so long is in the hope that the dust settles enough for the AFL to be comfortable to make an official announcement at a time of its own choosing.2 points

My trainer at the gym trained under Mark Neeld during his time at Ocean Grove and only had great things to say about him. He has told me during the past year or so, that MN is insightful, great as a mentor to the young guys and the boys at Ocean Grove had the greatest respect for him. I am sure we are on the right track.2 points

I do all my Christmas shopping (wife, three kids and daughter in law, plus myself of course) with one annual 'phone call to the Melbourne Footy Club Membership Department. It punishes the credit card a bit, but I know that all the recipients value my gift more than anything else Santa could put in their stockings ....... and just as importantly, I know that all the proceeds are going to a bloody good cause ...................... I can't wait for the day when I can use premiership memorabilia as 'stocking fillers'.2 points

Exactly what I am saying w00dy. It amazes me how ppl get very personal about a player not making it at AFL level. Cook did not ask to be drafted by the MFC. He just threw his hat in the draft in the hope he could make it. You cant blame a player for wanting to play AFL. If he and Jace Bode were recruited they were seen as having potential. Dont get angry at Cook for not making it. He gave it a go.1 point

You are indeed correct. It was 1983 and on the Sunday WOS Crackers Keenan said that Palm would have nightmares about Flower that night. Flower kicked 40 goals from a wing in 1983. Has any other player ever kicked 40 goals from a wing ? In the match you refer to Flower had 38 disposals, 15 marks and 2 goals. 38 disposals in those days was far different to 38 disposals today. Palm had 10.1 point

Is it that you genuinely haven't understood the arguments here or is it that you're just trying to misrepresent me?I support the moves. Got it? If he gets it wrong then I get it wrong. Got it? The difference is he's a professional and paid to get it right and I'm not. If he's got it wrong we are worse off. I don't think he has and if he (and I'm) right I'm sure you'll be on here telling me that my attempt to undermine him has failed. How amusing that a thread basically in support of Neeld is causing such a response. I'm sure you're a nice bloke Robbie but you really are struggling. There's no (hidden) agenda here, stop looking under pillows.1 point

"Sleazy Sam Blease". Has the pace and the will to take 'em on. Has kicked too many "arsey" goals for it to be an accident. One of many to be excited about .1 point

So now that we have completely buried the kid let's try for some objectivity. He won AA honours in the under 18's - arguably that puts him in the top 24 junior footballers in the land ( I say arguably as footballers miss the championships because of injury and certain top ten picks have a few off games in the championships and dont make AA). By my reckoning that makes him at least a top 30 pick. Yes, it was over ambitious with pick 12 but based on the evidence at the time he was a highly touted draft pick. What does that tell us? Not that we picked up a footballer with pick 12 who should not have even been drafted by anyone ( to claim that again is retrospectivity of the highest order) - we picked up a footballer maybe 10 rungs too early in the draft who just didnt make it - we paid first round for probably a second round draft pick. Some make it - some don't - them's the breaks. Whether Cook will make it is a moot point - some footballers just take longer to mature and are showing little at Cooks age - what I think is very apparent is that Neeld has little interest in project players - his picks are going to show their hands pretty early or out they go.1 point

I think Fan is making a very valid point - if a significant proprtion of the players that Neeld cut make it at a successful club then he's ditched talent that could be developed - it's that simple. There's always a risk that one or two will out of so many and that's not conclusive, but if a number do then that's cause for concern. On the other hand if they don't make a mark then kudos to him. That's simple logic to me. IMO the only "agenda" going on in this thread is anti-Fan agenda.1 point

The joy Robbie could raise in MFC supporters and the groaning admiration he drew from the opposition were highlights of a long but ultimately unfulfilled career. One game against the Toigs, well into the RDB era sticks in mind. Ron had tried to make Robbie play off the half back flank but after a few years of this torture he did let him off the chain occasionally. Around 1983, naturally at the MCG, Robbie lined up on the wing on David Palm. From memory he had 35+ touches and Palm had about 5. The Dees won but my Toig supporting mate clapped the champ off the ground and muttered "David Palm should give his match payments to Flower. He's just had the greatest footie lesson he'll ever get".1 point
