Welcome to Demonland: Jack Steele

Can we hurry up and claim victory on this one already? This guy has clearly made everyone walk taller the moment he came through the door.

He was a big reason we got back into/stayed in the game.

An absolute jet who might be even better for us than I’d hoped — culture, standards, heart, grit and skill!

I'm overseas and out of the loop but with Flanders choosing Saints Jack is almost certainly gone.

Is there a knock on him, is his body cooked? Is he past his best?

We are in desperate need of culture change and leadership qualities and i would have thought this guy has it in spades.

We are bottom 6 for a few more years I reckon and need a no DH policy to turn this club around ... on and off the field.

This guy who started the thread gets it big time. Is it King?

A great signing and a great fella by all accounts. The cultural shift from moving out the players we did over the summer and bringing Steele and Checkers in will be something we benefit from for years to come. Good solid citizens who go about things the right way

These two with Max, Viney and Lever give us great leaders across every line that can only help bring our young brigade through.

A reliable source told me last week that Jack’s wife was so [censored] off with St Kilda that she has thrown all his Saints stuff into the bin.

100% He's gotta up there as pickup of the year. As King said, we're so lucky to have him.

A Senior.. Jnr Mac.. if that makes sense? Played a Brilliant game on the weekend!🤩

Thank you

A moment I loved in the Carlton game; after Cripps kicked a goal against Kolt, Cripps immediately attempts to get stuck into Kolt and a big pack forms around the two, Steele quietly pulls Kolt out of the crowd and settles him down. His tackling and contest work have been amazing, but he shows genuine leadership shown in moments like this.

We'd be rooted without him.

He and Gawn were holding us together in the middle early yesterday, until we got going later.

Sticks his tackles (would have been a focus for everyone after the poor tackling efforts vs Fremantle, but he nails that brief week in, week out). Doesn't shirk. Runs both ways.

JS top tackler in R3 and R4 for us. Already 28 for the season, = top in the league.

The boys really lifted on the weekend,

R2 - 42 tackles
R3 - 55 tackles
R4 - 82 tackles

I think he's actually exceeding my expectations of what he'd provide on field.

Sorry Sainters, he's ours now.

The only negative I can find with Jack Steele is we may only get 60-80 games out of him. Oozes quality and fast becoming one of my and I’m sure many others favourites!

Man crush x 100

I get so many things wrong (is that a disclaimer?) but I didn't have to be a rocket scientist to know good things would come from the recruitment of Jack Steele. There's a real old-fashion leader-of-men feel with Jack.

What astounds me is the st kilda supporters were delighted to rid of him.

Stopping the development of some kid.... jeebus. He is the reason they develop ....

Wait really? I thought most were disappointed they let him go

Not sure about that. That roar when he got his first touch in Rd 1 was every fan in the stadium - not just Dees fans.

Will be an interesting watch to see where Jack Viney fits back into the side on his return.

Will he play a more forward role? I can’t see Viney and Steele both in the middle at the same time

I swear it wasn't that long ago I thought our gameplan was becoming 'have repeat midfield stoppages, bang one long, force repeat stoppages, bang a shot at goals, repeat', and our team sheets sometimes looked like it had two 'follower' lines. We even had two full-time rucks!

Isn't it amazing that after years of leaking such players from the club for various reasons, we are now wondering if we can fit an injured one back in?

Related to that, I've been thinking about how much our midfield has changed. Much less weight being thrown around - even before you account for the height of Langford and Culley - and much more diversity of types.

More range in height, much more range in bulk, more range in style, more experience and ability in other roles even amongst the youngest.

Going to be absolutely fascinating to watch that develop.

Wasn’t there rumours of issues between Jack and Ross Lyon from the beginning, Lyon came in and had a go about him being too heavy or something like that? I get the impression they never really got along and Ross was looking for an excuse to punt him, ridiculous decision on their part but very happy to have Steeley guiding our young mids now. Looks like he works very well with Tom Sparrow who played probably his best game ever too.

Not just synergy with Sparrow, but Tom will Learn so much from Jack.

That is possible knowing Lyons’ reputation, as a my way or the highway Coach.

Well more the fool Ain’t Skillda for persisting with a coach with suck poor people management skills

He’s an enigma.

He looks really controlled which makes him look less ‘aggressive’ in and around the middle compared to your Viney types.

But he does so much work and is just so smooth with it that it comes off as probably less effective than he really is.

He would be a menace to deal with I think.

Saints are famous for making terrible decisions such as sacking coaches

Who covers Steele for them? They don’t have much.

Shaft your captain for a young ruck and utility?

pathetic.

But he is a beauty and i’m so glad he’s with us. No way we are 2-1 without him

Agree.

I think both would be significantly hard done by if dropped to the seconds.

Both are champs.

I’d rather Steele to be honest right now. Better ball user. Both do heaps of tackles and work hard but really we need ball users.

He can also use the ball properly.

He has been outstanding & it's good we've finally recruited a player from another team who isn't a dud

To be fair his kicking is probably his biggest weakness. Hasn’t been disastrous for us yet, and he’s easily making up for it with the rest of his game, but his kicking isn’t ideal.

Viney might find himself a regular at Casey!

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
