First Tom Hawkins and now Jeremy Cameron. At this rate Billy Brownless will be captain of the AFL Team of the Century.

Taking the red&blue glasses off for a moment, AA captaincy should’ve gone to Jordan Dawson.

Don't agree. Max deserved it for being a mainstay in the AA team for 8 years. Speaks so well, and is a natural leader. Has led our team for a long time and won a premiership as Captain. Absolute joke to make Cameron Captain. Disgrace.

What's with Geelong key forwards who have never been captain being selected as captain of the All-Australian team?

It’s part of back of envelope agreement that a Geelong player be made AA captain every 4 years. Danger, Selwood, hawk and now Cameron. (Not fact checked but feels right)

Incredible achievement by Max, our Captain continues to show the way in a very tough year, no excuses for Max!

Well done to Pickett and more to come !

My gosh, Max. Glad that he'll forever be etched into the records of the game as the bloody legend of a player we all know he is.

Didn't Jimmy say something about thinking he'd be something special. Doing Jimmy proud and give me something proud about to be as a MFC supporter in a fairly ordinary season.

I hear Dangerfield is a shoe in to win best young player award next year

What annoyed me was when Howie interviewed Nas (who, btw, looked like he’d sooner stick knitting needles into his eyeballs than be up on that stage) the majority of the interview was about the “Miracle at Marvel” as the t-shirts say. Nas got an AA guernsey for the H&A season, not just that game.

Max is a legend.

As for the captaincy its a joke and puts Cameron in an embarrassing position. Either its awarded for outstanding team leadership for the year or renamed as something else if the criteria are different. Dawson / Gawn have a greater claims as actual leaders. If the criteria is the player who has had the most outstanding year (but wont win a Brownlow because of the position they play in) they should be honest about that. I am all in favour of recognising the non mids in some way given the Brownlow bias).

I'd go one step further. At least forwards have the Coleman Medal they can win. There's nothing equivalent for the defenders. Choose one of them for captain. Either Sam Taylor or Harris Andrews would have been an excellent choice.

there was talk about the time of danny frawley's suicide that a 'golden fist' award would actually be set up by the afl to honour the best 'defender' in the competition

i don't think it ever got beyond the 'thinking about it' stage of existence

we are truly blessed to have a wonderful individual like Max Gawn representing us.

surely one of the greatest of all time in the league now.

I think we all need to get comfortable with this because we'll be hearing about that game and his performance for the next 25 years.

Can't believe Bont is on 7x already. He'll definitely get to 9 you'd think as he's still 29 (turning 30 this year)

Kudos to Bailey Smith.

Firstly, for opening up about his time in a psych clinic and getting through a dark time. Not an easy thing to admit anytime let alone before a national audience.

Secondly, for winning the Coaches Award with Noah Anderson, having played 3 less games.

Could take out the Brownlow but maybe the missed games will work against him.

Max Gawn 👏👏💙❤️🏆

Not enough media discussion on Max Gawn’s achievement… 8 X All Australian team.

He’s a 33yo ruckman fighting for just one spot in the team.

Finished top 5 in the AFL Coaches Association award.

GOAT AFL RUCKMAN 🐐.

What makes it more ridiculous, is when the Captain himself admits he is a ridiculous choice, as he has never captained anything before.

I would have thought after 8 AA’s and what he has gone through ,Max was a pretty obvious choice for his leadership, but if not him then Dawson would have been the one.

They have actually denigrated that part of the AA team. But it is the AFL and they get a lot wrong.

We finished 14th the last two seasons

That’s not AA Captaincy material

8 All Australians. No other Ruckman has achieved this. In the history of the game. There have been 3 anomalies with the All Australian Captaincy. Hawkins in 2022, Jeremy Cameron in 2025 and Buddy in 2018. Of the six other players that have achieved 8 All Australians, there are 2 forwards in Ablett snr and Buddy, and 4 mid-fielders in Ricciuto, Harvey, Ablett jnr and Dangerfield. Max was Captain in 2021, but in 2022 he either should have retained the Captaincy or there was Lachie Neal or Patrick Cripps, but no Hawkins gets the gig. This year sure Dawson or Harris Andrews would have been noteworthy Captains but if you are looking left field then recognising Max for the body of work over the last 8 seasons, including the last 2 where his team has been poor, he would have also been a worthy Captain of the team.

On top of that a Geelong player has Captained the side 6 of the last 13 editions of the All Australian side. In a time when they have only won the premiership once. Fair. I don't think so.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
