Tim see the post two before yours and even the following one and there could be the answer.

Maybe it also encourages Richo to look around at other options.

It is not the creation of another role as I see it, but rather a renaming at best and maybe a way to change the person in it and even remove the salary from the soft cap, if it is included in it.

This bloke Guerra is quite the cunning fox me thinks 🤔

Is this a role we could tempt someone like Bartel with? Seems like Hinkley is out, as is Daly if it isn't a head coach role. Who else could we look to?

It would be interesting to see how this works with an experienced head coach like Buckley, but if its someone he trusts it could be a really useful role to have someone else experienced as a sounding board

Could be a role for someone like Marcus Wagner if Nathan Buckley is appointed.

Woohoo. I do wonder how someone with Bucks would work with a head of strategy though.

Where does that leave Richardson?

Is this a quiet backhander to a guy who's contract we don't want to pay out but ideally we want gone?

I'm really not sure Bartel has the runs on the board to take over what is effectively the running of our entire FD.

I’d argue it’s just as important - Buckley has no experience outside the filth bubble, save for his first year at the bears, which was over 30 years ago and in a completely different era of football

He’s going to need just as much, if not more, help than an experienced assistant coach coming out of multiple football programs

I doubt he would characterise his situation like that and I doubt he would see the head coach as anything less than the arbiter of how to play and pervasive strategy through the FD that will bring that to fruition.

The more and more I think about this role, it looks like a way to have a role for Richardson should he annoy us by sticking around for 2026.

The last thing this club needs is more levels of management and less accountability at each level.

Presumably we would have the coach reporting to the head of football who reports to the strategy boss who reports to the CEO who reports to the board. As if any experienced coach is going to accept that.

I'd much rather we support the coach with the football staff that he needs to get the best out of the playing group, rather than putting in more managers to meddle. That's the problem with hiring people who have worked in government entities - they are good at spending money and bad at taking responsibility.

Yeah, good point. Had forgotten about him

Get the right person and they'd be Havana a good working relationship.

I often hear Jimmy Bartel's name being thrown about in reference to overseeing Footy Departments. Can someone enlighten me as to what his credentials for this type of role are besides his illustrious career on the field?

His name is always talked about like he has already had success in transforming a footy club.

Was on the board of the Giants for a number of years after retirement; it is at least some experience in the administrative side of a club.

he was the 'footy' gw$ board member, based in melbourne

he talks very well in media

that's it

Gee this Guerra chap is good. Imagine what he is going to do when he actually starts in the job.

Bartel's experience is pretty good. He was on the GWS board from 2018 - 2024 and was actively involved in list decisions and re-structuring of their FD, he also played a part in getting Kingsley the coaching job. Before that he'd been a part-time list management consultant at Brisbane.

He knows what he's doing and has a lot of experience in building lists and developing footy clubs. If there was half a chance I would be all in.

He doesn’t let the grass grow under his feet, that’s for sure.

probably a noob comment, but it would be insane to not focus on an AI related role (if it doesnt already exist).

1 - track real time player movement and spit out strategy updates

2 - track historical team strategy changes over the last say 2-3 years

3 - combine historical and real time strategy trends to work where the edge is, and calculate out the probability of future strategy adjustments

a real time example would be setting up a camera system to cover the ground.

using techs and AI, assign each player and track their overall behaviour. this could tell you what strategic moves are being made and how they change in real time.

obviously teams do this now by watching the game, but it could be so much better with AI

Definitely happy to see a new psychologist at the club, we have been mentally broken since 23.

Let’s hope the new psychologist brings a wand and a jar of happy pills.

Heard the interviews with our new CEO and he spoke well. But it is a head-scratcher to me that so many people think he's doing a great job because he's "pondering this new position". Like the axing of Goody, I feel like many supporters will clap change for changes sake. Surely it's too early to know? At the end of the day, there's more than one structure that works and a lot of it is about the personalities / skills of the key people and setting it up to function most effectively.

Obviously they need to make some decisions before the head coach is installed, but equally shouldn't this structure / new position be a little dependent on the coach we select?

Spot on.

The prevailing belief is the only way is up, we couldn’t do worse than we already are etc.

Hashtag beware jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

Maybe Goodwin would have been a better coach if he had a strategist in place, as long as we would accept the advice. I am not sure what this would mean for Richardson’s role. Good to see major change coming.

He had Jennings initially but he was moved on after 2019 I think?

SEN reporting that Paul Guerra is looking for a roll for Mark Williams. Choco

Has anyone else seen that report?

Guerra said that in one of his interviews on Friday

I just saw Guerra at the local takeaway and he was having trouble choosing between the salad roll and the sausage roll.

I'm unclear as to what this "strategy" role is meant to be. If it is some sort of forward-thinking role, I see it as the future of football. With Greg Swann now at AFL HQ I see the potential for lots of rule changes. Someone at the club needs to work out the impact of those changes. For example, if the AFL decides to get rid of the ruck nomination rule and mandate that ball ups and throw ins happen much more quickly, teams will need at least two players capable of taking the ruck man role on the field at all times. That has significant implications for list management, player development and game strategy.

Ironically, I see this as the sort of role Simon Goodwin could undertake (as could most AFL coaches once their senior coaching days are over).

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
