Is this rumor, question or fact?

Would be a great pick up.

I heard on radio last week it was a maybe but nothing concrete.

Pay that.

Surely the only way to get McKay is if a commensurately highly paid player goes out - I.e Petracca, Oliver, or the like?

I value those two much more highly than McKay

I think Harry plays his best footy as forward/backup ruck, which solves a real need for us and is good for his confidence as a player. It allows him to get up around the ball get his confidence up and then unleash forward. Won’t help our goal kicking much though!

See Collingwood... adequate but no stars in their ruck or fowards.

It's all about delivery

You're pulling our leg right?

  • Whispering_Jack changed the title to Harry Mckay leaving blues?

I think the club's going to have to be aggressive and over pay for a McKay type, with respect to key forwards. We're not going to shoot up the ladder with Petty, JVR and Jefferson as out key forwards for 2026.

I'm blaming the last 3 weeks primarily on our forward line's lack of conversion. How do you possibly kick 26.46 and not lay most of the blame on the forwards? Earlier in the season we were losing games due to less scoring shots which could indicate that we were simply the inferior side on the day aside from the GWS game. However recently, we've dominated key stats including scoring shots, and that's on the forwards.

You'll probably wonder how McKay would address our conversion woes? 58-33, 45-31 and 49.21 in 3 of his last 4 seasons is how he'll address our woes.

If McKay comes to this club, I'm going to microwave my membership

Or dump 4 cubic metres of manure outside Punt Road! (oops....wrong club)

Beggars can't be choosers.

He is a flawed player, but probably the only proven, mature forwards on the market. Concussions issues are worrying.

I hope we still have our eyes on Ollie lord or Derksen - but I am a bit tired of looking at budget options, I hope we get a big fish.

nope

Hill was moderately successful and on the market a few years back. His skills are separation, marking and goal kicking. Essentials for a forward but without the excellent delivery he gets he's back in the pack.

Mihochek ... moderately skilful who maximises his opportunities. Fritsch was better but not the last few seasons.

Rucks... Cox and Cameron. The latter is improving and is probably about the 6th best in the league but no superstar.

Grundy was traded because McRae had a view that rucks weren't worth the money. He's probably been proved right. The half backs and the midfield win games these days

We tried to get McKay a few years back. We offered him 6 figures in 2023 and he rejected it and stayed with the Blues. We are now a worse club with less money to offer him - unless Petracca or Oliver leaves.

I'd be all for landing him if we can, though agree we'll probably be overpaying. Can constantly clunk a mark and kick a goal, which is more than can be said for any forward on our list sadly.

We can't expect to land Jeremy Cameron, so let's be realistic. A Coleman medalist who can hit the scoreboard is a better option than battlers and NQR suggestions like Lord and Derksen who can't even crack a game.

Hill + Elliot are an elite medium/small forward duo. I agree their tall forwards are mostly B graders though.

Cameron is a star I reckon. So underrated.

He’s not who we need right now. We need to keep adding elite kicks and guys who don’t panic. Bergman and Butters would be ideal.

If he leaves he'll be at one of three Victorian based clubs, it won't be us.

It’s a common misconception that he’s a poor kick for goal

Other than an admittedly very bad form slump a couple of years ago he’s actually been quite accurate and, as the stats show, has managed a lot of shots on goal

When Curnow was out was when his kicking accuracy was poor.

Being the main banana will be enough pressure to ensure his kicking reverts back to old habits again.

I’ve seen the same intel posted on Big Footy (yes grain of salt etc) but I have to say I’m very concerned that we’re not going to be able to land anyone of note this trade period

We really failed to capitalise on being a club in the window between 2021-2023 in terms of bringing in more A grade talent - could be a long couple of years if Lamb and co can’t start to bring in more like McKay, Bergman etc

Straight swap for Clarry?

Otherwise no way he fits in our cap

I probably would given we can’t take a mark inside 50 and have not good tall forwards

this also highlights our kicking for goal being a much greater problem than our delivery into the forward line. We are getting good shots on goal.

last year McKay kicked 49.21. Overall hes kicked 261.176. That surprised me. He's not a bad set shot.

i'll add mihocek to that list too - he, elliott and hill are integral to the way that the filth's forward line works because of his mobility and his workrate

interesting that both he and mcstay started life as key defenders who have been converted to fowards in their mid to late 20s; not too dissimilar to our own plugger mac or petty to be honest

Clayton will 100% be shopped around again end of year, unrelated to McKay, Matt Rowell signing on probably helps our cause a bit, creates a bit more of a market

And I'd argue that small to medium forwards are now more important. Ah Chee, Long, Elliot, McCluggage, are the type of players I'm thinking of.

One reason why we brought in McAdam. Shame it hasn't gone to plan so far.

giving bbb vibes imo

Mckay has looked much better in the second ruck for Carlt this year, he would take a lot of pressure off JVR and allow JVR to play closer to home. Much more of an up the ground player than BBB.

But with a big chunk of coin put into Oliver, Petracca, Kossie and Lever mainly. I can't see how we could afford another big contract out.

Apparently, we offered a big deal to Logan Morris from Bris last yr, Garry Lyon mentioned this on SEN, which good to know we had a crack. Dunno who will be available this year. Hoping our forwards develop and we don't need to go shopping, optimistic I know.

a) it's not for want of trying and b) A-grade talent is thin on the ground in general, and even thinner on the trade table. Once you take out go-home trades for players heading back to S.A. or W.A., it's slim pickings.

On the other hand, we have done very well in the draft, and have been smart in making the draft work for us.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
