Don't want to knock the medal committee bit Bowser was the best 3 quarter effort for mine and when the gameplan looked garbage he was always trying to find the passes.

Extra tough choices this week, but here goes.....

6 The mighty Max - who else?

5 Bowey - the Little Master.

4 Petracca - the bulldozer is back.

3 Oliver - looking lean and hungry again.

2 Chandler - but worth more on another day.

1 Sparrow - much improved performance.

Points could easily have gone to a host of others (until Max went off and they all fell apart).

600 Gawn

Just a champion

But needs to learn his to kick with a permanent hook

Daylight

5 Rivers for 3 3/4 qtr for his run and carry

4 Sparrow lifted again with his tackling and determination

3 Langdon plays with heart and runs all heart

2 Viney tackling machine (just needs to kick a goal when he has a chance … missed 3 chances )

1 Chandler plays with heart and smart footy

Don’t get sucked into stats - Bowey Salem lazy disposals and little chip kicks time to get real and use the footy with purpose

And strugglers were

-3 Fullarton -2 Fritsch -1 Spargo

6 Max Gawn. Clearly cooked and time to retire. SnorkSnorkSnork.

5 Jake Bowey. Has emerged from the workshop with major upgrades.

4 Trent Rivers. Because I give extra when players fight their way out of a form slump.

3 Christian Petracca. I recognise this Petracca.

2 Kade Chandler. Quietly becoming a more complete footballer.

1 Tom Sparrow. I've been on his case this year, but like Rivers I like to reward turns in form.

BANG ON.

Well I thought Max was a stand out leader tonight: so -

6: Gawn

5 Bowey

4: Viney

3: Langdon

2: Petracca

1: Chandler

And I thought Rivers, Sparrow, McDonald, Salem and Langford played well.

6 Gone

5 Tommy Mac

4 Bowery

3 Chandler

2 May

1 Petty

6 Gawn

5 Bowey

4 Salem

3 Trac

2 Rivers

1 Viney (15 tackles)

6 Gawn - marked cleanly all night and as soon as he sat down late, we conceded four goals. Good to see Fullarton play in the ruck and clearly that's not going to work because he doesn't have the body strength to play there.

5 Trac - stupidly bombed it long a few times, but our most dangerous player all night.

4 Bowey - another clever game from the little master. Definitely a SC special and aside from Gawn, our only player in AA contention at this point.

3 Sparrow - sure Viney laid more tackles than him, but I thought his were more important and he had 16 touches and a goal. Viney had 19 touches and his 10 kicks were all long and intercepted.

2 Rivers - with 28 touches and 12 marks, he provided lots of run from down back. But you have to wonder if he and Salem realise that the high-risk play through the middle also comes with the highest reward. Because I can't remember them once taking the game on in that regard.

1 Salem - a couple of late howlers, but he clocked up the stats down back with what I suspect was a career-high 34 disposals and 13 marks. As with Rivers made sure that 95 per cent of the time we went down the wings.

6 Gawn - by so far it doesn't matter - up against a worthy opponent too

5 Bowey - great game

4 Rivers - so dependable now

3 Petracca - class above, as we know

2 Langdon - never stops running, get tired just watching him

1 Macdonald - best form of his career? and who said he can't kick?!

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
