Melbourne star Christian Petracca has sustained a cracked rib following a knock at training on Friday at Casey Fields.

AFL Performance Manager, Selwyn Griffith, provided an update on the midfielder’s injury.

“During today’s training session, Christian received a knock to the rib area in a contest,” Griffith said.

“We sent Christian for scans this afternoon, which unfortunately showed a crack in his rib.

“This is frustrating news for Christian, who was progressing well and had recovered from the rib and spleen issues he sustained during the 2024 season.

“A timeline for his recovery will be determined in due course.”

Coming up on ch10 sport next.

What an earth are they doing at training? First Max with his laryx and now Trac with a broken rib.

Let’s train non contact, that’ll help us for round 1

these things happen. he'll be right for rd 1. not ideal but rather now than in season.

Might not do his confidence a lot of good.

Max'll be able to share a thing or two with him about not losing, or at least regaining, confidence after a repeat injury.

This is a disappointing setback for all of us, but I commend our Club for communicating the news immediately.  This probably wouldn’t have happened a few months ago.

No contact for a couple of weeks, then light training through Feb. Thats probable for tracc.

The thing is we have had a very good pre-season otherwise.

Might help.

He'll be fine. Is in ripping nick so the run is in the legs.

This really would be almost a non-issue if he didn’t have the huge hit last year. Obviously the main concern is his mental capacity after this, but I guess it could go one of two ways, 1. It impacts him negatively mentally or, 2. He took a big hit, went to hospital and this strengthens his confidence. Time will tell.

i guess the main concern outside of that is if his rib area is compromised as a result of the hit last year

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
