PREGAME: Rd 24 vs Collingwood

We beat these [censored] then our season from hell will still be superior to the that of the reigning premiers.

Well, what I had expected would be a 10,000 bump in attendance off the back of their win yesterday evaporated with Carlton’s win.

It really is unfortunate that our home game against them comes in a dead rubber. Any other week of the year and we pull a bigger crowd. Hurts the coffers.

During the offseason, there was plenty of talk around Hunter and his off field standards and behaviour. Him playing or not won't make any difference to us IMO, but the context around it is extremely intriguing to me.

With the timing around the Petracca noise and the culture question being raised yet again, and with Hunter on 199 games and uncontracted for next year, this makes for a really interesting decision from the outside.

Which part of culture wins out? Do we get a player who may very well retire to 200 games, or do we act so ruthlessly that we don't select him off the back of standards behind the scenes? I don't claim to know if there's been significant issues of course, but his non-selection this year says a lot.

Without all the facts, I don't know where I sit on the decision, but it is interesting nonetheless.

The only chance Hunter has of playing is if everyone else is sick.
I have said it before and I will say it again if the club had their time over they would have never gone near Hunter. It’s been a shocking list management decision.

Why? Because of off-field issues?

IF WE WIN

Get to enjoy beating the Pies

Knock Pies out of 2024 finals race

Dees likely finish 10th (draft pick 9)

Get to enjoy the song

Alex Neal-Bullen gets a final game victory

Will be at least a bright spot on a down year

IF WE LOSE

have to hear that putrid Pies song

have to endure Pies talk about finals and their edge over the Dees

finish 12th (draft pick 7)

Will be a downer for the night & for the summer

LETS GO DEES. LETS BEAT THE FILTH THIS WEEK !!! GO DEES

They can't make finals.

Realistically, no. Mathematically, yes.

Let me dream man.

Lots of talk around here of hard decisions this off season. Could start this week by resting ANB to avoid risk of injury.

All we need is a 100pt win against the pies..

Hmmm.. that's a possibility... I will take $1: to $1,000 against it happening.    any takers?

I posted this in the draft capital thread about the impact of the result against the Pies.  We could slip all the way down to receiving P5 if we lost.  All it takes is:

  1. St Kilda defeats Carlton by say 20 points
  2. We lose to Collingwood by say 25 points
  3. Gold Coast defeats Richmond by 50 points

None of these results are really unlikely and if it happens, we could end up 14th.  St Kilda are probably next on the AFLs list of helping out and may get band 1 compo for Battle.  So winning and ending up 10th would push our pick out to 10 at best.

P5 vs P10 is obviously a huge difference against a dead rubber result.  If it was any other team, I'd accept an honourable loss.

I just can't deal with that against the Filth.  This win really could finish the year with some great energy and good vibes into next season.

Wouldn't that also give us a very favourable draw for 2025?

Another great presser from Goody. Now that wad a sermon on the mount.

With Sparrow out, either K Brown or Woewodin would be the most likely to come in. Laurie would be another option.

The side functioned well forward of centre after Sparrow went off despite looking to be top heavy. It will be interesting if we go that way again and the sub is whoever comes in; or if Melksham is the sub again and we favour more pace and pressure in the forward line.

You would think ANB will tag Nick Daicos after doing a great job on Kings Birthday.

I still think McVee is being played out of position, as he lacks a bit of strength and speed off the mark to win the ball at stoppages. Similarly, Rivers had an ordinary game last week with his kicking. But we will probably need to use them both in the middle again this week, as we are just lacking midfield depth.

I think AMW comes in and Juddy spends more time in the midfield.

A terrible tragedy has occurred on the golf course where 4 Collingwood players have some how been hit by 4 stray balls and have gone into concussion protocols.

Can't see us winning this, too undermanned. Also Collingwood have been playing well of late, this isn't going to be like GCS.

if they turn up and give it a crack it'll be enough for me. Hopefully see the 3 Musketeers up forward continue to build cohesion and effectiveness.

Read goodys said he's not sure weather to play may in a dead rubber or not.

No way. Absolutely no point. Do not risk him for any reason.

Just out him away for the year

Would love to see Maynard accidentally take out Moore and Cox attempting to deliver a sneaky hit on Gawny.

Win for ANB and BBB.

Go Dees.

ANB trained in match sim with Casey players yesterday so may be rested.
No other changes on the horizon except for a new sub to replace Melk. It may be Laurie or Woey who both trained well in the white team.

He spoke very well and I felt reassured about the Petracca situation specifically and the club generally.

I can see the rationale in not playing ANB this week given we're one year short of the wild card round, meaning this game would be match of the round as opposed to a dead rubber under the wild card format.

He's not going to be with us next year, so why accrue another 120 minutes of game time with a player that isn't part of our future. They could give Laurie the minutes that ANB would have received. Laurie should be eying off 20 senior games next year.

It's exactly the same dilemma as playing BBB at the expense of Turner or Petty missing out on forward line cohesion minutes this weekend.

But I expect ANB will be playing a farewell game in front of the fans.

Silly Saturday

We MUST win this game on Friday.

Sure beating GC by 50 odd points was great, BUT it would be so much better to see us "Smoke" the black an white filth.

Don't need to to be sniping blokes like Maynard does, just keep pointing up to the scoreboard when we keep piling on the goals.

How the media have let Collingwood off with a free pass for under performing this year, astounds me.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
