This is what most people fail to appreciate. The FD and Coach create the image of the team it wants. This 'design spec' is what the manager then attempts to fill.

Most often a few years in the making.

Unlike the present share market crash brought on by a few overnight executive orders, most ups and downs on the field take a reasonable amount of time to play out.

I think this for me is one of the key reasons that I am frustrated and annoyed at Goody. Pre-game on the ABC broadcast they mentioned that we had (I believe) 15 premiership players out there while Geelong had 12. The experts were asked to discuss this and why then that Geelong were in a better position, Mick Malthouse pointed to Goodwin for too long being set that "these are the guys who won us the premiership" and not taking into account that that year we had individual brilliance of Trac, Oliver, Viney, Gawn, May, Lever, Petty, and Fritta. Now that all those players have trailed off (some much more than trailed off) the bottom end are being exposed for being average footballers that were playing at their absolute peak because they had the freedom to do so. Now that they are being relied upon to be something more they are shown to be what they are.

He also then pointed to Geelong's ability to recruit for need and their aggressive style in doing it, they see a hole, they go and fill it with ready made quality. We have had holes in our line up since before the premiership, 2022 we also failed to take advantage of Casey's dominance and turn the list over. Bedford was an absolute failure, we was bashing down the door and yet we persisted with Spargo and Nibbler (who wasn't being as effective), while giving Chandler nibbles at playing.

I've gone into a long winded rant to basically say this started a long time ago, I will always be thankful to Goody for helping us get a premiership, but his management of the team after that has cost us.

 

Goodwin should be happy that the owners of the Denver Nuggets dont own MFC.

Similar coaching stints, got generational talent, one flag/championship, list/roster got holes etc

One big difference is Denver is 4th in a very competitive western conference.

I wish our board had the fortitude to make the right call now.

Boning the coach is really going to give the Government an incentive to fund millions of dollars worth of taxpayers hard down at the track.

Problem being atm that there is literally no one to hold any of the football department to account for these. Having a CEO in place ASAP is extremely important otherwise the review will have been pointless.

the denver nuggets - who won their first championship in the nba less than two seasons ago - fired their coach and gm this morning

using nba coaching logic Goodwin would’ve been sacked after 2023, Macrae after 2024, and Malthouse would be at his 7th club 😛

  • rumours have it that we have approached multiple existing afl ceos; they have rejected us

It's an issue but I don't think the club can really sit on their hands if the current form continues through to the middle of the year. Collingwood lost their president prior to the 2021 season but they managed to remove Buckley and start looking for their next coach despite facing a board challenge from both fans and Jeff Browne.

A CEO is more likely to make a call on operational changes without a President, than a President would without a CEO. The CEO is literally overseeing the day to day operations of a club - and a President really shouldn't pull the trigger on something as major as a coaching change without the oversight of a CEO.

The CEO would have input but coach removal would have to be approved by the Board.

Sure but ultimately you can't keep hemorrhaging forever just because the club has another position to fill. The people currently at the club will be responsible for making a decision.

i don't want the decision over the CEO appointment to be rushed. gotta get that decision right

I believe an interim head coach could work (stem the bleeding, provide a circuit breaker) until a new coach is appointed in the off season.

    It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
