PREGAME: Rd 17 vs West Coast

Recommended Posts

Eagles will fancy themselves. Reid will fancy again being a 19 year old bullying players nearly 10 years more mature.  Dees have to be ruthless. Hard to imagine.  This has to be a 8+ goal win. Otherwise it’s poor.  We have to hammer them.

Thought Langdon could've won it for us, but again he is a terrible shot for goal when he is on the run. He has no composure. Petty kept veering left with his shots on goal. Please get KPF like Roo who take their time to line up and don't toss the ball up as the walk in for a set shot.

Petty also goes for height in the kicking action, where verticality is critical to getting the ball past the man on the mark without 'touching'. There is a subsequent lack of direction in the resulting kick, peeling off to one side of the intended direction - (result = missed goal). Whilst often regarded as 'excessive', the run-up of Brown counters this problem of 'too short a run-up, too close to the man on the mark at the delivery point off the foot'. In other words, Petty (and several other forwards) need to immediately extend their run-ups on set shots (from marks and frees) so that their contacts of the ball with the foot is well before the man on the mark, so that less emphasis is on the 'immediate vertical'  and more on the 40 -50 degree line of flight so that the rising ball is markedly clear of the man-on-the-mark but not too 'suddenly vertical' because it was necessary to 'clear' such an opponent with such a critical proximity. With the subtle application of reasonable force in the kicking action, combined with an improved distance of a longer run-up for a 'clear' kicking point well-short of the opponent, so that the flight of the ball (for direction) is controlled, less likely  to sway in the breezes or lose momentum, left or right, missing the the big sticks zone at the goal line. Summation: take a walk to a point where you can select a kicking spot well-short of the man on the mark, and kick firmly through the ball (follow-through) to control improve direction.

Can someone explain something to me.

I am trying to get a ticket for my daughter to attend her first game. It's supposed to be free for kids.. but I am still being charged a processing fee.

Is this right? Is there another way to get a ticket and avoid the fee? I know it's only $3 but seems so pointless.

I'll take a 1 point win (butt clenching as that would be) at this point....I just cant see us dominating anyone the way we are travelling at the moment

Against Bris we won tackle count by 18 with 7 more tackles inside 50, we had 12 more 1%ers, +14 contested possession. On our home turf we take this.

We need to play like we did against Brisbane and then some, don't run out of puff in last quarter.

Oh, and kick straight from easy set shots people who are meant to be playing as forwards, that will help.

I watched a bit of Eagles vs Hawks.

The Eagles pretty much packed their bags at half time and went home. They were pathetic.

If we can’t run with those guys we should sack every HP coach we have.

maybe just turn up and get a ticket at the ground?  if they are free, why do they even need a ticket?

Hope we get a win

It surely will not be a sold out event,  I get to the Essendon game and that likewise will be a walk up

Go Dees two wins in a row please

Didn’t we just play West Coast? (Or was that just some bad dream?)

It’s utterly bizarre we play them again after a mere 4 weeks but have yet to play some teams.

The Eagles kindly played their GF against us (we don't help by being soft as butter the whole day), and have been smashed by everyone since.

Well I am certainly looking forward to reaping the benefits of that this week so we can roll forward some momentum into the game against the Bombers so we can take down a current top 4 side (and beating those mugs is one of my favourite pastimes) 🤣

They won’t. But I really wish they’d make Bowey come back via Casey. I feel we have stalled his development by rushing him back to the big league at all costs.

Eagles will come out breathing fire. That was the most insipid of performances yesterday with a decent team. Reid & Kelly will be better for the run. Understandably it was a difficult day for Yeo. No doubt they will come at us. No big win here . Just over a month ago they touched us up. Our team is young so form will fluctuate.  Need to be at our best.

When he shows consistent strong form at Casey, something he hasn’t come even close to doing.

apparently he is but I can’t see them rushing him in.

Kinda nice that it’s against his old side. We can cheer for him as he runs out.

Well done Jayden. Always one of us!

Whilst the ladder says we're in the hunt for finals right now,  If we drop this game, it will be absolutely season over and players that need any surgeries should be operated on now in order to for this club to have its best pre season in its history, to make up for one of its worst just gone.

And West Coast will unfortunately come in with natural response after one of its regulation stinkers that they so often dish up.

However, if we bring in Goody's favourite two words - contest and defence, have a healthy quarter time lead and go at least 50% accuracy then we should win this game with no issues.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
