It says to me that Rivers will play majority midfield again and that AMW will effectively replace Rivers off half-back.

But who comes out for AMW in? Riv was in the midfield last week. Could be Bowie I guess.

If we want Tomlinson to leave at the end of the year then we drop him for Brisbane.

Whilst that may please some here in the short term, next year when we are short of key defenders and Tommo is playing good footy at a premiership contender I don't want to hear any whining that 'we let Tommo go for nothing'

He's done everything we have asked of him and deserves to keep his spot to tackle Hipwood.

May to Daniher, McVee to Cameron Lever floating

hell I'd even play Tommo in the fwd line

I'm in the drop tomo this week camp.

But someone suggested dropping Howes instead, which isn't such a bad idea.

The issue as I see it, is as a defender, tomo needs a one on one match up. He's too slow off the mark for the intercept role in my book.

Is hipwood too quick? If not he could take him, freeing up may and Lever to wax on Daniher - or may to lock Daniher down and lever intercept.

My concern though about the lions forward line is nor the talls, it's the medium forwards - Mccluggage, Bailey, Cameron and McCarthy.

And for that reason, I think Howes will keep his spot.

On tomo as a forward, I've long thought they should try him up forward. Perhaps in a defensive forward role on opponents intercepting defenders.

Feeling that Salem will be out due to his knee injury.

Tommo has been playing good footy but with Lever returning, May and TMAC and Tommo we will be too tall. Maybe Howes gets dropped but he plays smaller and is much quicker than the others mentioned.

McCarthy won't get a single disposal on Friday night and I'd be happy to put a lot of money on that.

Well with podcast leading the charge it’s only gonna get more and more negative round here! Andy in full MFCSS mode, George basically throwing baby out with bath water and in full meltdown mode — inc saying our kids are no good and that we somehow need to ‘replace’ Jackson, Brown, Hibbo, Harmes etc which is just such an archaic way to look at modern footy, the talent we have coming through is FAR superior to all above outside of maybe Jackson, but I’d argue JVR is his equal talent wise, Kos is a FAR superior player than his 21’ version, Rivers same, Mcvee >Hibbo, Turner will likely out-produce Brown of 2021 beyond, Windsor is significantly better than Jordon on talent, but they’re not replacing anyone, they are their own players! How no one else seems to notice the outlier results happening EVERYWHERE is beyond me. We convincingly beat North and had them get a bit lucky with freebie goals to give them a surge of momentum, whilst we stopped to crawl which is likely a fitness issue combined with fact we were 40 up, that’s basic psychology 101 — yet we held-on, thankfully!!! Shots on goal @george_on_the_outer? We didn’t have any in the last quarter — so we had 15 in 3qtrs which is nothing to cry about, we stopped — we had momentum taken and we held-on for dear life.

I’m not sure who’s seeking positivity at present outside of poor @binman, who continues to support his positivity with data unlike many of the doomsday-mob — Whilst also highlighting WHAT the issues are, we can’t run atm, and our skills are poor which in a trans gameplan really shows through!

We have clearly set ourselves for this game and I expect a strong showing. A win? Sure why not? The fact we’ve suddenly become a bottom 4 side is ludicrous — where were Brisbane jsut weeks ago? Pies at years beginning? GWS AND cats slaying now struggling, why is it so few can see how tipsy-turvy modern footy is? It’d all momentum confidence and fitness!

Petty is fitter, Salem’s base will cont to grow, as will Clarry’s.. like AMW coming in and LEVER — check the stats on how we do without Rick?!?! Go on.. you’ll see the impact he has, seriously he makes a HUGE difference to our setup and cohesion esp in transition and organisation.

This dourness is SO easy, it’s convenient and it highlights one’s true baseline or default — when things get hard or scary, they fold! Let’s hope our players aren’t buying into that modus operandi! It’s much harder to stay positive and keep faith in a team that’s given us so much to blv in, more so than ANY dees side since the 80’s and going beyond it with a flag. We have issues — but all clubs have this year thus far and I sure don’t wanna be Sydney who haven’t yet, cus odds are, they WILL and clock is ticking..

Trac being done hurts, it’s akin to Bont or Daicos being out, superior to Swans losing Heeney in impact but it certainly doesn’t rule-out a solid campaign here/in and COULD be making of Riv, Kos and others for next year.

what happens if we lose to lions by 8pts? Or steal a win? What will it be then? the frustration I have is the sourness won’t dissipate, and those piling-on won’t come round and say ‘oh, maybe I was wrong’ they’ll just enjoy the win and wait for another chance to pile-on again. THAT is the frustration, many just jump-on every single little negative even Andy talking about Curnow over Weid for goodness sake, that’s full MFCSS right there — Curnow had HUGE knocks on his character and NO ONE was gonna take him inside the top 10, based on those issues. Blues took a punt and it paid massive dividends — JT hit rate is INSANELY good in comp with contemporaries, yet when we’re flat everyone and anything gets a wash. I feel for those whom fall in a heap, I know it’s not on purpose and based on emotion, but many others make a choice to attack the club and it’s becoming really tiresome.

Club is flat, this is when they most need to keep faith and a win against the lions would be a MASSIVE tonic and is a big ask on form, but it’s certainly not impossible! 5% off for them, 5% more on for us and it’s GAME ON peeps — youthful exuberance can swing fast, so let’s TRY not to be too OTT is all I’m asking.

Love your post.  Things are never as bad (or as good) as they seem.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we got up.  For all the introspection on demonland, the lions have a few issues. They are the highest scoring team from the defensive half in the last 8 weeks but it doesn’t suit their list.   When pressure has been applied they have leaked turnover goals (even the lowly saints looked like they would get up until the umps intervened).

So I’m hoping we get back to basics and apply a lot of pressure.  They don’t deal with it well and don’t have much speed in their back 6.  If we do that and get some turnover goals our confidence can come back as quickly as it fell away.

He's done everything we have asked of him and deserves to keep his spot to tackle Hipwood.

I think our treatment of Tomlinson has been pretty ordinary post 2021, and he's always the first to be dropped at the drop of a hat. None more so than his MFC career best game against Collingwood in 2023. Even against Sydney in Op Rd, he was far from our worse but got omitted. Not a crime against humanity by the MFC, as every club has an unlucky player, but he's pretty stiff overall and will get dropped for Lever this week IMO.

Having said that all that, he'd be a useful chip in a hypothetical mid season trade period. We could trade him to a club short of KP defenders in exchange for their surplus of tall and small forwards or resting rucks.

Not a huge Tomlinson fan but I’m with you in playing him forward. What could it hurt? I’ve ummed and arred about Petty as a forward but it seems clear his best footy is in defence. Swap them and see what happens.

No.. it’s because he’s being tagged EVERY single week.

He has broken plenty of tags in the past so I think there are other factors at play. Moving him to a run with role on Neale would give him added accountability and I can bet he will still pick up the same number of possies as recent weeks.

it won't be the first nor the last time it happens

Yeah, I don't doubt that he has been beaten taggers. The initial point I was agreeing to still stands I.e. a run-with role on Neale.

Oliver has really dropped his defensive instincts this year such that his tackles per game have dropped almost 50 percent from previous year.  He tackled more in his debut year.

Maybe a tagging role will sharpen those up, but he needs to get back his 'hunt mode' both ball and player.   Unfortunately from just watching, I think his hand injury was worse and has had a lot more impact than let on.

The boys on Foxtel’s Midweek Tackle mentioned the following:

1) Fritsch is so close to getting dropped it isn’t funny, but will probably get one last chance.

2) Stunned that we’re now fielding one of the youngest sides in the league.

Thanks

Ps. Son and I are heading for a beer at the German Club beforehand if anyone else is like minded.

Sorry LFS, I don’t know which gate you enter for the captain’s run. I can find out tomorrow morning though, then I’ll post on here

Enjoy drinks at the German Club! There are some DA members who’ll be there but the majority will be at the Pineapple Hotel.

Really? Wow! Where did you hear that?

PS guesse what - we won that game. We beat Adelaide who were 6-1 (and went on to finish top and be favourites in the GF), whilst we were 3-4.
